“Seriously?”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 April 2012

Having read the reviews on this site, I expected to be blown away... I was only blown away with how bad this place really is. Overpriced, paper thin walls, lack luster gardens and a pool that can only be compared with a USA Super 8. The views of the valley are only if you get lucky enough to be put in a room that has one. We looked out upon a stone wall and a tree trunk that was surrounded by irrigation hose.

While I will agree the owner is nice and speaks good English... You are better off at one of the hostels in town where you will find amazing gardens unique landscape and proximity that makes up for any amenity mentioned above that we were never offered.

No free pisco sours, no solitude, no view, no nada. If you do however want to hear what the other people in the room beside you are doing, the receptionist's cell phone conversation, every car that drives by and dog in the compound (which there are four) then this is your place.

For 65,000 Chilean pesos there are much better values to be had. If its your only option, look a little bit out of town, you'll be better off for it.

The rooms are clean and the bed comfortable enough but you have a little more privacy than a shared room in a hostel.

The cabin are old, very cheap furniture inside, some pieces of wood of the veranda were damaged .
It looks like a cheap cabin but they charge too too much for that .
the only good point it was clean !
the worse was our first diner: we love meat so we had two steaks, they arrived over cooked and did not like so good,,,,my wife refused to eat it,i ate half and i then i was sick the whole night .

we complained about it to Anthony,he was embarrassed,we had the feeling he know the kitchen had a problem with the meat

But we i checked out the 2 steaks were on the bill ,,,,
the lady at the reception did not know about it ,so i paid

Bad experience ..

I had booked 3 nights at El Galpon because of the positive reviews on Tripadvisor. Our cabin was OK, we had 2 separate bedrooms, small living, kitchenette and a very nice veranda where we spend most of the time. Watching the stars at night is great, incredible how many there are! Anthony, the owner, is very friendly but we think he should invest a bit more time in updating the whole property. One part of the wooden deck of our veranda was broken (which was quite dangerous for our youngest one) and the cabin was a bit dated and not well maintained. A few things to improve: small stairs to the swimming pool was partly broken, some broken chairs and umbrellas at the pool and the hose to clean the pool was floating the whole day in the pool. Breakfast was good. Our advice to people considering going to the Elqui Valley: there is not that much to do. If you go to Vicuna, half a day is enough and you have seen it all. There are only 2 distelleries to taste pisco. Unless you want to relax and stay a few days by the pool, 2 nights is more than enough. Comparing El Galpon to the other hotels we have seen in the area, it was a good choice, though it needs some improvements.

We are Canadians who are also Australian citizens who travelled to Chile for the Mining Expo in April 2010 and decided that we would add another week heading north then east in the wake of the terremotto.

I (the wife!) had booked accommodation at another spot (not El Galpon) into the Elqui Valley...we headed out by car from Santiago to La Serana. Then off into the Andes... but after many hours going up many mountains and many scary switchback roads... and with a very small car (the accommodation we were booked into assured us we only needed a small car to get there!) we decided the safest way was to turn around and go back the way we came when our fuel gauge registered half full and the path was less than a small car width.

Though the unsuccessful trip to the unreached accommodation was awesome, with great photo ops up the Andes... we were both VERY tired and I was stressed from the hairpin mountain turns when we arrive back in the Elqui Valley! With no accommodation booked! MORE stress!

Then we arrived at El Galpon!. Worried.... the gate was CLOSED.

Called the mobile phone number from outside the gate... AND PHEW PHWE! ...a a very unassuming but very welcoming voice advised us that... yes, he did speak SOME English and YES!!! he had accommodation for us!

Tony sensed our pretty high level of marital stress and immediately offerred us Pisco Sours... we partaked and he listened to our harrowing story... offerred us our choice of rooms...we TOTALLY destressed!

The rooms Tony offerred us were all very clean, tasteful, not large but with hugely comfy beds, and with gorgeous views to the valley and deck accesses. ..simple, very satisfying breakfasts included in a room that overlooks the valley...

El Galpon will be our first choice when we visit the Elqui Valley again!!!

A Really Great Memory! Thanks, Tony. Serendipidy happens!

We stayed with our two children (3 and 16 months) at El Galpon for 5 nights in early May and thoroughly enjoyed our stay and we highly recommend this hotel. The location is about a mile to central plaza in Pisco Elqui and an easy drive (I imagine a quick walk as well). The property has very nice gardens with citrus trees, avocado trees, and other plants and flowers. There is also the pool which is great. We ate twice at the restaurant and found the food to be very good. The owner Anthony and the hotel manager Marcelo are both very friendly and helpful with suggestions of places to visit and eat. The weather was warm during the day (mid 70s) and cold a night ( upper 30s). This valley is totally relaxing place and we would have like to have spent more time there.

We stayed at El Galpon for 3 nights in January. We arrived a day after our purse was stolen in Calama. Before arriving in Pisco Elqui, we had tried to file a report with the police but were unsuccessful. It was our good fortune that Anthony was around to help us get it done. He speaks fluent English and he understood our need to file a report. He personally called the police station and explained our situation to them. We went to the station but when we again encountered problems, Anthony came to the police station and stayed with us until the reoprt was finalized. Throughout our stay at El Galpon, we consistently received friendly and helpful attention from Anthony and all of the staff at the hotel. We were served great pisco sours while sitting at a comfortable table outside in the shade. We enjoyed our time relaxing at the clean and large pool. There is an ample breakfast served in an attractive dining room that has great views of the valley. We had 2 terrific meals in the on-site restaurant. El Galpon is perhaps a 10 minute walk from the town centre. Although there is a bit of an uphill climb, the walk was not a problem. In fact, we found the walk quite pleasant and enjoyed the exercise. El Galpon is comfortable, clean, and well located. We didn't go into other accommodation in the area but, from the outside, it was difficult to find other places that looked as promising as El Galpon. It was our sense that this is the best place to stay in Pisco Elqui.

Travelling up the stunning Elqui valley for the first time, we came across El Galpón and were so pleased that we did. Anthony and Michael welcomed us warmly and we booked into one of the rooms for 2 nights. The cost was very reasonable and the room extremely comfortable and spotlessly clean. Relaxing beside the pool with the aroma of flowers and blossom, watching the sun setting on the mountains and the vines was idyllic. Seeing the vast expanse of stars in the southern sky was fascinating for us, as we normally see a very different northern sky - rarely so clear. Out of season, there were few guests, so I am not sure what the hotel will be like in high season. Anthony was able to join us for a drink and it was interesting to find out more about the hotel and the area. The main comment to make is that we were very happy with the service we received and would recommend the Galpón highly.
