Lovely villa on a steep slope. Great view, restaurant, room and exceptional service. Highly recommended. Tip: when you arrive park on the municipal square located a bit further up the hill than the villa's own parking. It saves you a drag with the luggage. The steep road is no problem at all, with any car.

We had chosen Hotel Villa Margherita for summer 2012 as our wedding venue, due to problems the management of the Hotel Villa Margherita has, it has been canceled and will not take place. And it looks like that our wedding is not the only one which will not take place.

Besides the problems we had with the management, we have loved the location of the Villa, which is perfectly situated in the pictoresque little village Oggebbio. Especially the terrace garden with it's great view over Lago Maggiore, the flowers, the pool and the wedding pavillon.

The dream of exchanging the vows in Oggebbio is over, but we are sure to find another great venue for 2013.

My partner and I were due to get married at Villa Margherita this year, luckily we detected there was something very suspicious going on when it came to costs & we took our business elsewhere. We were recommended Villa Margherita by our wedding planner (see separate review for our unhappy experience). Our deposit money had not been forwarded to Villa Margherita by our wedding planner so we had to deal with Villa Margherita directly. First problem we discovered is that Villa Margherita is not fully licensed to marry, they can only perform blessings, you have to go to the unattractive town hall to get married first.

Second problem - three weeks' to go before our wedding we received an unsubstantiated demand from the villa for a €5,000 "deposit". Part payment was understandable given they'd not received the original funds from the planner but we were suspicious about this request since we'd not received an invoice breaking down the full costs of the wedding. We questioned this demand and repeatedly requested a full breakdown of the total costs for the wedding so we could understand what the total costs were going to be and % our €5,000 would cover. No breakdown, estimate or invoice was ever forthcoming. We repeatedly asked for this information but they refused to send it. In reply to our offer to pay a 20% deposit on what we estimated to be the full cost, we were simply faced with multiple, aggressive demands for the €5,000 and threats to cancel the wedding unless the money was sent immediately. In addition, despite our numerous attempts to correct this, one of our guests was booked (erroneously?) into the most expensive room.

No one in their right mind would simply send €5,000 without knowing what was behind the request or what the total costs would be. At this same time we consulted Trip Advisor and having read previous reviews it became clear that there was a great risk of incurring many hidden charges which the hotel were not prepared to reveal in advance - hence their reluctance to send a detailed cost breakdown in advance.

Whilst reviewing Trip Advisor we also thought it telling, given this venue's claim to host a wedding nearly every weekend throughout the season, there's not one positive review from newly weds (or their guests) who held their nuptials at Villa Margherita...

After all this we decided to consult other hotels and we were pleased to discover three better hotels, offering discounts, who were willing to take our business. On this point, for the location, Villa is certainly very overpriced. There are much better value hotels in much better locations elsewhere on the lake.

If you like to roll your suitcases on a uneven path, then carry them to your room climbing narrow stairs.
If you like to have a narrow room with a terrace where people are passing through.
If you like to pay an expensive rate for an not perfectly cleaned room.
If you like to have your car rubbered on the private parking.
Then this hotel is for you
The service is not that you would expect from an hotel.

For a little bit of heaven on earth, visit the Villa Margherita, a perfect small jewel of a hotel on Lake Maggiore in Oggebbio, northern Italy. The villa, perched on a hillside, boasts eighteen uniquely exquisite rooms and suites, each furnished with antiques and named for a particular flower. My husband and I stayed in the lavender room, complete with violet tinted walls, crisp white linens on a king bed and a modern bathroom complete with fluffy robes and jacuzzi. Many of the rooms, like ours, have casement windows opening onto magnificent views of the lake.

The grounds are terraced and contain rambling stone walls, cascading with roses and bougainvillea. There is a prisitine swimming pool and inviting lounge chairs are placed amid the velvet green lawns and lemon trees, ideal spots for reading or dreaming.

Innkeepers, Luigi and Carina, restored the once vacant villa and are most gracious hosts. The staff, which attends to your every need, includes Carina's two daughters and Luigi's grandmother, Nonna, who will cook you dinner on the weekends or by request. Each morning, breakfast is served either in your room, or on the terrace. Luigi will even brew you his special verbena tea and gave us a bag of his dried verbena leaves to take home.

The Villa is one hour's drive from Milan and a perfect base from which to explore the lake towns of Ascona, Cannobio and Stresa. Rooms range from 150-310 Euro, including a full buffet breakfast. It is heavenly!
