We got the funicular railway up to Brunate from Como. This place is quite a long walk from the station, down steep winding lanes. However, the walk is worth it for the stunning views from the terrace dining room, and the simple but perfectly served food and drink. There is no written menu, and the staff simply tell you the three choices of prima, seconda, and dolci. The main courses were all 12 Euros, as was a bottle of the excellent house red wine.
Walkers would be advised to continue down the hill to Como after the meal, using a charming (but steep) footpath rather than struggle back up the hill to Brunate. If you come here in the evening, a car or taxi would really be needed.
