“Great Place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 August 2008

We stayed in Apartment 42 which was right at the top of the complex and right next door to the pool. We stayed from June 20th to July 5th. We were really the only English speaking people there which can be taken as an advantage or disadvantage whichever way you look at it. Advantage is that you can have a nice quiet holiday. Disadvantage is that a lot of the menus were in Italian or German but it gave us a chance to brush up on out Italian.

I cannot say enough about the apartment. The view was stunning and the price alone was worth it. There were a few minor draw backs. We ate once in the restaurant and I have to say the food was fabulous but the service was a little bit like Fawlty Towers. A family who came in after us to eat were told the boiler was broken so no pasta then there was pasta. But all in all I loved the place. It was a place that I would not really eat in but there are so many beautiful restaurants around that you are spoilt for choice.

Also there is a small playground which will keep the kids amused for a little while.

Obviously a car is essential and don't believe what people say about Italian drivers. Yes they do drive fast and crazy but it is predictable so you know what they are going to do. If you drive at a normal speed and don't sit in the over tkaing lane then you are fine.

Try to get to Colico because that is a beautiful town as is Bellano and it is essential that you go by ferry to Bellagio. I think it is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

We also visited Varenna which is where the car ferry goes from. We visited Bellagio and Menaggio. In the end we really didn't need the car for Bellagio as it is all within walking distance of the port.

All in all we really enjoyed our time and were sorry to be going home.

This hotel has the potential and location to be first-class. It is, however, lacking in management. (This does not apply to the pool and restaurant, which are run by different people and gives a very good service.).
The views from most of the apartments are terrific, if you don't, like us, have a hedge left uncut, which obscures the lake-view. They did have it cut, when we asked, but we were already three days into our holiday, so we felt we had missed out.
Another very bad problem were the number of ants. By the end of the week it was so bad that we had to spray everywhere as they had got into our flat and even our bedroom.
I agree with the last person's review: it looked to us that, whoever owns it, is not interested enough to see how his or her staff are coping. Also, they obviously never stay in their own accomodation to discover the problems.
Would I go back? Maybe, but this time I would want an appartment higher up, which might solve the ant problem (we were very low - nearest the lake).
The views from and the whole design of this place are absolutely lovely - it's such a shame they can't get the rest sorted out a bit better.

  • Liked — Location and swimming-pool. Views from the appartments.
  • Disliked — Standard of cleanliness, the shower, hedge blocking the view, ants.

We stayed here for two weeks. Nice clean place with fair prices but lacking some things we needed. Internet was by dialup only and I had to dial back to the USA. Cost me $341.00 USD for dial up over the two week stay. Air conditioning was not sufficient to cool any of the rooms our family had. Our room was a one bedroom with air in the bedroom which worked out to be OK but we had 28 persons staying at this resort and the rooms with two or three bedrooms only had one air conditioner in the kitchen which would not even cool the kitchen let alone any of the bedrooms.

The staff was very nice but not much help. Whatever you asked for the answer was always tomorrow and most of the time tomorrow never came. It seemed like even thought the staff was experienced in hotel services the owners were not very accommodating to the guests. Always some excuse. An example was that when we made the reservations 6 months in advance we were told that air conditioning and high speed internet would be available but there was always some excuse as to why it was not happening and I was assured that I could use the high speed internet connection in the office since it was important to me but when I tried to do that they would not let me use it. They always had some excuse that did not make sense.

The TV system had over 200 channels but only one in English and the TV was about 10 – 13” in size. The pool was not heated but it was 100 + degrees outside so the cool pool was OK once you were in it for a while. Most adults were out of the pool after about 15 – 20 minutes. The washing machines took 1 hour to do a load and about 2 hours to dry. We heard everyday about how the machines would be fixed tomorrow but in two weeks there is never happened. If you want your room cleaned, fresh towels ETC more than once per week then you must pay about 30 – 35 Euros each time you want it done.

The rooms are on the side of a hill that is steep down to the lake with no elevator so getting your luggage down and you’re self up and down depending on which unit you’re in was hard on some of the older adults. Our unit was on the drive in level so that was good for us but everyone else complained about going up and down all the time. The kitchens are not fully equipped for a two week stay which is strange since they require a one week min stay. They had a very small and not so good at cooling refrigerator, no oven, no microwave, no fans, no screens on the doors. With all the great food you can buy at the market it was a shame not to be able to cook it properly.

Oh and lets not forget the bathroom shower. Smallest one I have ever seen so I just stood on the bathroom floor, removed the shower curtain and took a shower with the water all over the place. You had to be careful since the hot water pipe would burn your arm if you tried to turn around while standing on the shower pad in the shower. The water heater which should have been a 50 – 100 gallon unit was more like a 10 – 25 gallon unit so hot showers and hot water were in short supply.

This could be a great place if someone who knows about hotel services took over. Even if they charge more and provide what most people expect from a resort apartment complex would be a great improvement.

The restaurant was great and the family that runs it also has one in Varenna just about 15 minutes away that was top of the line for food, service and views. Be sure to go there. The restaurant has nothing to do with the hotel owners and they had been listening too many complains about the hotel from clients.

I would recommend staying else ware if your planning a trip to the north end of lake Como (Lake Colico). There is a hotel called Hotel Risi that seemed to be much better, had all the services you would expect but no pool. They are building a pool on the roof which should be done by end of 2007 and the hotels in Varenna are much better. There may be other hotels, villas or apartments in Colico that we did not see so check around. The area is just starting to get American tourists who are just starting to discover that if you go about 30 – 45 minutes north of Bellagio you can enjoy the same ambiance for half the price without the crowds.
