Our family of five were staying in Varenna for our wedding which was at another hotel in the town. When we first arrived at Villa Michela we were greeted by the amazingly enthusiastic Michela whom we would have been forgiven for thinking was only in this excitable state when we first arrived, but her drive and passion to ensure that we had a memorable stay went on throughout! The garden is an absolute pleasure and delight! Situated on a downward slope that overlooks Lake Como, there are lanterns, mature Willow tree's, swinging hammocks galore and a random bed in the middle which actually works for lying on and watching the stars. The views are stunning and you have to pinch yourself to be reminded that this is a relatively inexpensive bed and breakfast. Incredible!

Our apartment was quirky, characterful and very comfortable. We had our own breakfast patio area which was set under trees and a joy to come out to each morning. Breakfast each day was varied, plentiful and beautifully presented. If you're planning on staying here, we'd recommend a car. We didn't have one and spent a small fortune on taxi's which are 12-15 euro's each way as it is definitely out of town. The location was fabulous once you were there, but getting to town and back became a pain towards the end of the holiday.

What makes this place above all is Michela. The views, the breakfast and the Villa are all wonderful but she is something else! Within about 15 minutes of being at the Villa we were on hugging terms with Michela like you would with some long lost friend. The children were literally saying 'Bye Michela, love you!' and we were immediately put at ease. Her work ethic is bionic with seemingly no-one else helping her run what is a fairly big operation for one person. Michela threw a party for us upon our return to her Villa which was incredibly generous, if not slightly bizarre at the time. She could not do enough for us and her personality is as much part of the product as her lovely bed and breakfast.

Certainly somewhere we would recommend!

Great little B&B to stay at if you have a car. It is up on the mountain above Varenna, Italy. We had a wonderful stay here for three nights, and Michela was very accommodating, coming down to he town center to lead us to the B&B (as its nearly impossible to locate on your own)! Lovely, quiet stay for three nights. Highly recommended. Stay in the suite (although bathroom is out in the hall). Lovely person and innkeeper! Michela went back to the restaurant we ate dinner at to find my phone because she felt personal contact may bring better results, which it did! She had it placed on my pillow for me to find when we returned after our day of site seeing. Would definitely stay again!

Our family of four stayed only one night in Varenna, and Villa Michela, but it was wonderful and merits a longer stay next time. It is located high above the town, accessible only by car up some typically Italian winding, narrow roads. Calling ahead for directions is essential: we got lost trying to do it on our now until Michela rescued us by meeting us halfway up.

Villa Michela is best enjoyed if you have time to truly relax and hang around the lovely grounds, taking a break from the tourist hubbub down on the lake. The views are tremendous. And it feels like you have discovered something special -- it's actually in the tiny hamlet of Regoledo, hard to find even on detailed maps.

Two other highlights are the breakfast -- a feast of eggs, bruschetta, prosciutto, fruit, yogurt, good bread, fresh butter, good coffee, and more -- and Michela herself. Her energy and joy for life are infectious, and a very welcome tonic in the middle of energy-sapping travel. She's very creative, always working on new touches for the villa and grounds.

My husband & I greatly enjoyed our 2 night stay in the Suite Room at B&B Villa Michela. The view from the balcony was gorgeous and it was so quiet and peaceful. All the positive reviews on TA are true.

A car is necessary, since the B&B is a 10 min drive from Varenna. Call Michela before you attempt the drive up the first time! We did not, and our GPS led us up from Gittana, a twisty road best suited for experienced Italian drivers. Michela led us back into town our first night and showed us a better route. She also made dinner reservations for us at Osteria Quattro Pass and walked us to the restaurant. That night, they were having a “Lake Fest.” The restaurants and promenade were packed, but there were beautiful fireworks after dark. It was also my 45th birthday, and when we returned to the B&B, Michela had lighted candles on our balcony and left a birthday greeting and roses. Grazie!

When we first arrived, we were hot, tired from the 9 hour flight, and hungry. Michela brought us cold apple juice and water and prepared a platter of ham, tomatoes, cheese and bread so we could make sandwiches. She also brought fresh fruit. It was a delicious, refreshing lunch that we enjoyed on the suite’s balcony. The room is large and light filled, as the TA photos show. We didn’t mind not having an ensuite bathroom, but there was no one else staying in the B&B, so we truly had the house to ourselves.

Bear in mind, you will not be parking directly in front of the B&B. There’s a parking area about 100 yards away and you’ll need to carry your bags down some steps and through the little piazza to get to the house’s gate, which is locked. Not a hardship – just don’t overpack.

Breakfasts are substantial (check out my photo). Eggs (frequently with gorgonzola), bread, tomatoes, prosciutto, fruit, yogurt, coffee, juice and cereals. We loved listening to opera and birdsong as we sat out on the patio. Breakfast was so filling, we didn’t need lunch.

The only minor issue is that WiFi was not working. We ended up going to Bar Molo for gelato and got their WiFi password. Also, we had no problems parking in Varenna. We found a white marked spot (white= free, blue= pay, yellow=reserved) near the river outlet near the ferry dock. There’s also a pay parking garage in town.

Michela is a delight. She pampers her guests and loves what she does. If you want a peaceful stay near Lake Como and don’t mind a drive up the hill to Perledo, B&B Villa Michela is for you.

We two grandmothers, seeking adventure the beginning of November 2011, saw the site for Michela's villa. However, we needed something closer in town and were able to book the apartment in town. Michela met us at the train station, walked us through town ,introduced us to landmarks, several proprietors of restaurants, the Monastero gardens, etc. The apartment was just what we needed! We could walk everywhere, the boat dock was just a ten minute stroll away, and if there was anything left over from dinner, we could ask for a "doggie bag" and store it in the refrigerator to make sandwiches for the following day's hike.

We were unsure of what the weather would be like, that late in the season, but we were truly blessed with crisp, clear, sunny days, even though the snow on the top of the alps across the Lake indicated that we probably wouldn't see too many flowers growing in the various villa-gardens we had on our agenda. Wrong! Every single flower in every single garden was in full bloom, and Villa Monastero, Villa Carlotta and Villa Balbianello were simply wonderful and wonder-filled.

We even got to hike to Italy's "shortest river" (only 800' long), which normally only flows from April thru September. But when we stopped at a local coffee bar, there was a photo of the river, and I pointed it out and bemoaned that it was too bad we wouldn't be able to see it. But the coffee bar attendant assured us we Could see it, because there had been lots of rain two weeks earlier. It is a hike on an old donkey trail, we saw no other people for the hour it took us to arrive there, but my photo album has photos of Italy's Shortest River!

We could have opted to pay the additional 5euros for heat, but chose instead to wear thermal undies and add additional blankets. So the value was good and the stay was just what we were looking for.
