“Better than ever”
Reviewed 1 October 2013

We have written about the Dunkery Beacon Hotel before and we really loved it. Now under new ownership, it is even better. Just as spectacular a location of course and just as comfortable, but two areas of significant improvement. The redecoration has made it bright, sharp and very smart, even more welcoming. Also new owners now do evening meals and very good they are too.

This has always been one of our favourite places to stay and it is now better than ever, brilliant.

Thank you for your review and returning to the hotel a second time.
Although our first year in this business faced some great challenges such as the weather and financial climate, we considered it a great opportunity to reinvigorate all the guest areas and make a break with us one to remember.
All my years in somebody elses kitchen are now being rewarded as I now have my own in which to show off the many years experience I have gained both abroad and in the UK.
So thank you for recognizing our hard work and commitment to offering a truly unique experience on Exmoor.

We stayed for two nights so that we could explore Exmoor and this hotel is in a beautiful location with lovely views. The accommodation, food and service were faultless. It is more like a large country house than a hotel and it is run in that manner. The lounge is charming, and candle lit at night. We are foodies and we found the food amazingly good. The owners should enter one of the food award schemes where they would score highly. The rooms were spotless and nothing was too much trouble. Micha, the waitress, couldn't have been more helpful and always with a smile on her face. We have no hesitation in recommending this place, you will love it.

This summer has seen a much valued increase in guests staying and dining at our country house and now we are coming to the end of the busy period, it is very uplifting to hear that our guests are continuing to appreciate the level of accommodation provided and the food I prepare on a daily basis.

We will be investigating the numerous food award schemes, but the feedback we get from both yourself and other guests will take some beating, so thank you.

As ever, we will continue with our efforts to create new delights in the kitchen and improve upon the great standards offered in the bedrooms and hopefully, we will see you return for more gastronomic treats.

A delightful country hotel. My partner, who is disabled, enjoyed room 5 on the ground floor. This room had the benefit of a separate sitting room from the bedroom. The food was very good and the owners and staff were very attentive and obliging. I would recommend a stay at this hotel. It might help other travellers to mention that orders for dinner are taken after breakfast so if you are not arriving until later in the day and would like an evening meal, a telephone call around 9.00am., would be an idea.

Room Tip: I have already commented on room 5

Many thanks for your kind review and apologies for the delay in our reply - it's been quite a hectic time over the last few weeks! We're very glad you and your partner enjoyed your stay with us and that our ground floor letting room was suitable for your requirements.

We're also delighted you chose to dine with us over 2 nights. We do as standard practice email the menu through to guests who have pre-booked dinner for the night of their arrival, so they can make choices in advance of the day rather than having to ring in the morning. I manage the kitchen on my own and prepare everything from scratch on the day, so a pre-order is much appreciated.

As you have discovered, our beds are so comfortable that guests often struggle to part company with them in the morning and, more often than not, we are still in the middle of serving breakfast at 9am, so a slightly later morning call would be welcome.

Best regards,

John

Just the nicest guest house I have stayed in - the rooms are comfortable and spotless, the location is great for walking and discovering Exmoor, and the owners are extremely pleasant and helpful. The food is excellent and you can take a packed lunch if you are out for the day. Very peaceful and relaxing - we wish we could have stayed longer but will definitely be back.

We're so pleased you enjoyed your first visit to Dunkery Beacon Country House and were able to make the most of the peace, tranquility and beautiful countryside that surrounds us. John and I are delighted you enjoyed our food as well - breakfast, dinner plus packed lunches - and had a comfortable stay in one of our top floor rooms (all of which have great views too)!

We hope you'll visit us again for some more walking/exploring in the not too distant future.

Kind regards,

Jane

What a wonderful hotel set in such a superb location . The owners were so nice and the food was at a level that would put many so called elite hotels to shame . The room had a fantastic view overlooking open countryside and and was simply stunning (10). Would highly recommend and I can see why this is voted the number 1 in Somerset .

It was great to have you both to stay and thank you very much for posting such a kind review. John is very pleased you thought the food he produces was top notch and we're both delighted you loved your four poster room with views out of the bay window to die for!

Hope you'll be back for a return visit in the future.

Our best wishes,

It has taken us a couple of weeks to get round to writing a review, but now the schools have gone back and here it is! As parents in a busy family, sometimes it feels there is little time to really call your own and properly take time out. When we do get to take time it is so important to us to get it right. So we would like to say thank you, not only to John and Jane, but also to previous reviewers for leading us to and providing a memorable couple of days that added to the sunshine of our summer. The Hotel was indeed as lovely as everyone says and we can only echo what all the previous reviewers have said about the quality of the experience. It simply met or exceeded all our expectations in all respects. We have stayed in 5 different hotels this summer and this was the one that left the warmest memories. Dunkery Beacon Hotel is the sort of place you find yourself looking for an excuse to go back to.

John and I are so pleased that you enjoyed your 2-night stay with us. We are blessed with being in a wonderful location to get away from all the pressures of a hectic life, so it was good to know that you were able to relax and have some quality time to yourselves whilst here.

We'd love to welcome you again when you next feel like a break away!

Best wishes,

We are just home today, having spent three nights at the Dunkery Beacon which is in the most beautiful and peaceful location. The last time we visited was five years ago and the improvements that John and Jane have made enhanced the pleasure of our stay enormously. The refurbishment is tasteful, beautiful, comfortable and charming and everywhere was spotlessly clean.
The food (including yummy home made biscuits in room!) was first class and John was more than willing to cater to our requirements, including cooking duck just how we like it. His talent is to be praised, as is Jane's knowledge and expertise in wine. We were most impressed by John and Jane's local knowledge too, considering they have not lived there long and they happily advised us on what there was to do and where we could find good walks. We must mention beautiful Misa, their assistant, who has the most radiant smile and sunny personality to go with it. One could not help but feel ' full of the joys' in her presence.
As well as the fabulous ambience, food, hospitality, peace and quiet etc etc, we were also impressed by all of the little touches and attention to detail such as fresh milk and afore-mentioned biscuits in our room, fresh water, toiletries, huge fluffy towels etc. The mattress was top notch too!
The Dunkery Beacon certainly lives up to the 'luxury' part of it's description.

Wow, thank you for posting such a great review - we really appreciate it! We're delighted that you like the changes we've made so far since taking over last year, all of which were done to enhance our guests stay here so it's reassuring to know that we're on the right track judging by your feedback. We showed Misa your review and she says a big thank you for your kind words about her - she was really chuffed!

It was lovely to meet you both and hope that it won't be five years before we see you again!

Best regards,

Jane, John & Misa
