The Danish Lagoon Luxury Beach Resort
Reviewed 15 May 2014

You can't travel to Siquijor without having the famous "Danish Lagoon hamburger"... fabulous views from the restaurant and very friendly staff. It was a pleasure to meet and have a beer with Johnnie and Jimmy, the owners, who shared their passion for and knowledge of Siquijor Island. Be careful not to have too much crude oil from Johnnie's bar... Great people, great food, great views, cold beer - life's good!!

We turned up to the Danish lagoon expecting a luxury service as written in the reviews. Unfortunately we were very much mistaken. The rude owner was practically telling us to stay elsewhere as apparently the accomodation would not be within our budget- a very presumptuous and insulting comment. We felt uncomfortable in this hotel with the pair of eyes at the bar looking at us up and down. The owner even went as far as to show us the lowest budget accomodation on the island that we could try- how dare he. He treated his staff rudely like slaves- and we knew instantly we would not be staying here. Restaurant menu was also limited and overpriced. Stay away!!!!!

I just had the pleasure of staying at The Danish Lagoon for almost a month and just have to say that it was an absolute pleasure. Incredibly friendly staff, owners who did everything to make my stay comfortable. Nice and clean everywhere. The food was excellent and a special recommendation for the hamburgers. Enormously large and tasty.

The cabins were practically furnished and very comfortable with a view from the porch that was really something else.

Some restoration and renovation was also well underway while I was there and the place is really starting to look good.

With only a few cabins, a beautiful garden, good food and a high level of service, this was truly a place for peace and tranquillity. Just what I was looking for.
Really, I hope I can once again soon can return to this peaceful place.

The main thing this resort has going for it is it's location and the great Filipino waiting staff. It is nice to have your own little building and the views over the sea are beautiful, with good sunsets to boot.
Although the buildings are an interesting design they have certainly seen better days.
We ate in the attached restaurant during the stay and the food was mixed. I didn't enjoy the "veggie burger" which turned out to be a giant cabbage sandwich or a semi- cooked fish fillet on another occasion.
The island is quite beautiful and we'd thoroughly recommend an island tour with Dexter on his tricycle / "speed bike".
Although we had a good time I'm not sure id recommend this resort to others.

We spent 3 nights in January. The owners were very friendly and made us feel welcome. All the staff was very pleasant and went out of their way to make you feel at home. Johnnie and Randi introduced us to a staff member who was in need of help with her son Fritz getting him properly attired for school and with books for his study. We decided to help with a donation. The resort is very clean and the food was great. Try the danish meatballs. We rode the island on a motorcycle and it was awesome. The traffic was not too bad and the sights were amazing. The rooms were clean and tidy with air con and had a great view of the sun sets. We would return.

Room Tip: we stayed in the little mermaid room. Very quiet with the odd moo from a cow next door

The Danish Lagoon has only half a dozen villas so expect privacy when checked-in here.  The resort’s name and even its restaurant’s (H.C. Andersen’s) were obviously a tribute to the Danish lineage of the owners and to cement this, they have this mermaid statue by their beachfront (a similar statue sits on a rock in the Danish capital of Copenhagen).

Our room is called The Nightingale.  Like all their rooms, it’s by the cliff and affords us a sweeping view of the sea.  It has two “hanging” beds and a sofa set in one corner.  The bathroom was spacious.

Pros

- Awesome service.  There were only a few guests so the service was personalized.  The Danish owners were also nice and would engage us in conversations about our itinerary for the day every time we meet.

- Spacious room with a beautiful view of the sea, but with no direct access to the beach.

- The non-slip tiles in the rooms with the granule-like texture assured me that even when my feet were wet, I was in no danger of slipping.

- Location, which is very near Siquijor Pier (there are 2 piers in Siqujor, and the other is in Larena).  Most ferries dock in Siquijor Pier.

- They have a private pool exclusive to their guests.  It’s small, though.

- The ambience of H.C. Andersen’s Restaurant and its food.  Make sure to try their Danish Burning Love.

- The well-kept garden.

- The security.  One night, we arrived back at the resort at 9 PM, and the guard, armed with a flashlight, escorted us back to our room.

Cons

- The upkeep of the room.  Our bathroom sink clogged up and had molds.  The bath mat was also tattered.

- The small beach.  Their shoreline is also rocky.

- The very small saltwater pool.

We were recommended this place and were not disappointed. Its a real credit to the vision of Johnnie who has really embraced the spirit and magic of Siquijor to craft a place that is really unique and very relaxing. The whole team running the place are awesome and everything from the oversized burgers to their assistance is recommending day trips and arranging a motorbike was first rate. The Danish lagoon is not a big corporate holiday resort and therein lies its charm. We will be back.
