Peaceful Place with Impressive Ruins. I spent over an hour taking photos. I really liked this place a lot. There are tonnes of monkeys here - Both Spider monkeys and Howlers. The Carvings on the chunks of stone left behind are very nice here.
You have to take a Boat to get here. - Nice ride!

Bring Sunblock, Hat and Water - you will need it

We stopped here on our way back from Piedras Negras. Since it was getting late in the afternoon, we knew that we were only going to see the highlights of the site. Structure 33, on the main plaza, is the highlight of the site. It is a long walk up the steps to the top of the pyramid.

There was a large tour group at the site when we arrived, but since they were on their way out it left the site to our group of 10.

Since we arrived late, we were not charged an entry fee of MX 55 each. Since I did not have to pay the entry fee, I will definitely visit this site when I have a couple of hours to wander around to see the entire site.

Access from the beach can be a difficult climb on the stairs which seem to have a reverse camber to them.

A visit to Yaxchilan is a superior treat, especially if you like Mayan sites where you are not jostling with hundreds of tourists. You can manage to visit this on your own, without a tour group, just read your stuff ahead of time in the Cadogan guide to Mexico or other superior writings about the Mayan ruins. You drive into the port town and right away you will see little businesses advertising river trips to the ruins. They all charge about the same price. We had a boat to ourselves. It rained all the way there, but the rain stopped once we entered the ruins. The howler monkeys were really happy with the rain and they sang and sang for a long time, much like an opera. It was very moving, and, yes, mystical. The ruins feels as though they could be swallowed up by the jungle again at any moment. This city had a prominent position on an Usumacinta River bend. The river area sported much commerce and other travels as the river valley supported over 200,000 Mayans, one of the most heavily populated areas in the Mayan world. Certainly not the size of Calakmul or Tikal, nonetheless, there are many interesting buildings to visit, and the small site itself is lovely. The staircase to the main pyramid building is astonishing. Bring water and snacks as visitor center is very simple and basic with bathrooms only.

This is a vey beautiful location. The 45 min ride along the Usumacinta river is idilic. The archeological site is magical. Guides and boat drivers are very friendly, reliable and responsible. They seem to love their heritage. It is roughly 2.5 hrs south of Palenque. Most of the road is in perfect condition, except the last 15 km. I totally recommended it.

We took a "Mayatur" tour to Yaxchilan and Bonampak. The tour company was terrific - good breakfast stop and good lunch. The boatride down the river to Yaxchilan was fantastic. On the way back we saw Crocodiles on the banks of the river. Yaxchilan itself is incredible - the ruins are still intermingled with jungle so there were Black Howler Monkeys and a Puma (yes, we saw a Puma close up). The structures of the city are gorgeous. In a lot ways, we enjoyed Yaxchilan more than Palenque (which is saying A LOT). This was an absolutely fantastic trip and I recommend the tour company Mayatur.
