“Fantastic Week”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 May 2012

We returned yesterday from a most wonderful and relaxing week at the San Giorgio. The hotel is immaculate, spotlessly clean and very efficiently run. The family that run the hotel are extremely pleasant and helpful and really seem to care that you are having a good experience. We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis and the buffet breakfast was more than adequate and of a high quality. The grounds at the hotel are magnificent, with a superb display of flowers. The swimming pools are crystal clear and very well maintained. The courtesy bus into Skala was very useful as we did not bother to hire a car. We did make the effort and walk into Skala on occasions, it did take around 45 minutes, but we would not advise someone walking during the hottest parts of the day. We will certainly return to this hotel in the near future and would highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Try for a first floor room if you are not too mobile

What a fantastic hotel, apart from the location, it's a bit remote (but that suited us) it is fabulous from the helpful and hard working staff, excellent rooms and the wonderful views even from an inland view room like ours you can still see the sea.

Food is very good both in the restaurant and the pool side snack bar,

The 4 pools are spotless and there are ample sunbeds and sun brolly.

The shop, however, is the only thing I would improve on as if you are self catering you will need to shop at a mini market either on the way or in Skala.

We travelled with Olympic and they were very efficient and on site holiday rep (Robert) was very knowledgeable about the island and very helpful.

We will most certainly be returning to this beautiful island and will def stay at San Giorgio again.

Finally, the family that own the hotel were very pleasant and helpful and spend a lot of time on site- it is a pleasant change to stay at a family run hotel rather than a faceless organisation run hotel.

Thank you all for a very memorable holiday we will be back soon.

We have stayed at the San Giorgio twice – June 2010 and June 2011. On both occasions we stayed self catering as we like the freedom of experiencing different foods and restaurants in the evening. Having a fridge meant we could have ‘supplies’ for breakfast/snacks.
The hotel is 3km (2 miles from the centre of Skala). This was not a problem for us and we walked in and walked back every night. It was a 35 minute brisk walk but I guess it would take longer in the middle of the day when it is hot. In 2010 I was dark in parts when we walked back in the night but we took a torch and did not find it a problem at all. In 2011, there was more street lightening so no real need for a torch (except on one bend). To be honest, we thought the walk was a good opportunity for some exercise after lounging around all day by the pool then having a meal in the evening. We didn’t consider using a taxi even though it was only €5 each way. This is clearly a matter of choice and as far as we could see, most did take a taxi. There is a free courtesy bus which you must book in advance on the day. This goes in around 6 set times I think (10, 12, 2, 4, 6 and 9) returning 12, 2, 4, 6, 9 (if you go in at 10 then you must return on the 12). There is no return bus when you go in at 9. We only used it on the last couple of days to go in at 9 and we did get a taxi back as after 12 days walking we were a bit fed up. Lots of people coming back by taxi all the time so you could even share if you see/recognise someone.
The on site shop does sell fresh bread which was useful for a mid day snack if you didn’t want to use the poolside bar. We bought cheese, ham etc in Skala as there was a fridge in the room. On a couple of occasions we walked in to Skala first thing in the morning (by 8) to pick up freshly baked bread. This was lovely and nicer than the one at the hotel shop but the walk there and back in the morning was quite exhausting as it was quite hot even at that time of day.
There is a restaurant which is very good and not overly expensive. We ate in twice (preferring to go in to Skala to experience different restaurants/foods). We tended not to drink at the bar because we went into to the town.
There were very few children here late June. I don’t know if this was because of the time of year or whether the hotel does not attract families as such (nothing here for children to be fair). This suited us fine as we were looking for a peaceful holiday.
Two good pools but quite cold in June. Plenty of sun beds (late June) and we had no problem ay time of the day (although some ‘book’ their favourite spot daily). There are wasps around certain parts of the pool but I didn’t see anyone get stung and you just ignore them. I can see that this may be a problem for some people though especially if you have an allergic reaction.
There are lots of steps to the rooms and/or steep slopes. We were ok even though it was a bit hard when it was really hot. I think this would be a problem for the less able or for those who prefer ‘less strenuous’ activities. Some did moan about this so be prepared. Stunning views from the highest rooms.
Would certainly recommend this hotel. It suited us and we had a fabulous holiday with this as a base.

When we arrived at the hotel (July 2011) myself, my husband and my 2 daughters aged 13 and 16 years thought we had died and gone to heaven....it was about 11pm and the pool area was all lit up and it looked like a swanky 5 star job and it didnt dissapoint. The staff are very friendly and you dont have to fight for a sunbed, there are 2 full size pools. The only downside is the distance to the main town which is a good 40 minutes walk however the hotel do lay on a mini bus service which you need to book and the times are not always convenient. The food at the hotel is very good and they have a very nice snack bar however we found this very expensive ( £6 for a pot of salad) saying that eating out on average for a family of 4 was £60 be it lunch or dinner. You would be mad not to love this hotel...we would love to go back

I have visited this hotel 3 times in the past few years with my family. It is modern, clean and great for relaxing. The hotel has several floors (with a quite a few stairs) and many have views of the sea. There are 3 swimming pools (2 are together, with an upper and lower section) with plenty of sun loungers and views of the sea. The hotel runs a shuttle bus into the centre of Skala which is free. Otherwise the walk is around 20minutes. There is a snack bar and bar on site with a selection of greek snacks and well as chips and toasties. All the staff were very friendly. Our room was cleaned daily. There is some entertainment, usually a karaoke night and a greek night. In reception there are many seats to lounge around on if you want to stay out of the sun for a bit, a large TV, a book swapping area and laptops to use the internet. Skala as many nice restaurants, I would recommend Siroco in particular. Also between the hotel and the town of Skala there is an excellent bakery which also have delicious ice cream for 1euro. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

We have been to the San Giorgio on three occasions now and each time it has been fantastic. The first time we went we were worried when the bus kept on driving out but once we got to the hotel the staff were fantastic, they welcomed us, showed us our room as the hotel is split over serveral floors.
This has continoued every time we have been. We have been in a range of rooms, some up top have balconies over looking the pool area and rooms down below have a patio surrounded by flowers and trees. All the rooms are spotless, cleaned frequently, with good sized bathrooms and fridges. There is a mixed age of guest with some returning every year because of how nice it is.

As for the facilities they are great. There is two free flowing pools surrounded by sun beds on two terraces, with a lovely pool bar. All drinks from it are served in a fozen glass to keep your drink cold and the food served there is wonderful. there is an extensive range of options from fresh made sandwiches to greek specialties such as souvlaki ( small pieces of meat and sometimes vegetables grilled served on a pitta) and huge greek salads.
Breakfast is served in the restaurant, it is buffet style with a large selection of fruit juices, tea and coffee. Fresh pasteries and bread every day, large fruit platters as well as cooked foods and ceriels.

You can eat at night in the restaurant if you like but the hotel offers a free shuttle bus to Skala. You book it in the morning for there and back, but mostly we walked down to the town cause it was down hill and got the bus back. Last bus back is 9pm so we went down bout 7 o'clock, the bus drops you off right out side a lovely Taverna which is reasonable price but try them all, even if there isn't many or anyone in becasue locals don't eat till late so they don't get busy till bout 9-9.30. We have eaten in everyone and not had a bad meal yet.
Especially try the:

Aquarius- for Mediterranean cusine with excellent service in an elegant and relaxed enviroment.

Old Times restaurant -offers its guest spectacular view of the sea and the gentle sound of the waves.

Pikiona- is a beautiful restaurant set in a charming surrounding on the beachfront of Skala. It is housed in a huge complex area including a lovely garden covered in pine trees with a view of the sea.

If you want to stay in town later then I advise you get a taxi back beacause there are no lights on the road back to the hotel. Taxi's are really cheap so dont worrie bout using them. But if you do go back to the hotel there is great entertainment from greek nightd to quiz's.

Skala is well known for its fantastic beach (one of the largest sandy beaches of Kefalonia). Make sure to visit the old village Skala in the hills - about an hours walk up the hill. If you want some nightlife then skala is probably the best! This village was built after the earthquake of 1953 when the older village, which was standing just behind the new village, was completely destroyed; the ruins of “Old Skala” can still be seen today. Skala is very much a tourist resort with some nice sights in amongst the cafes, bars and fast food joints. The beach is at the bottom of the village and is very, very long. The sand here is nice and can be reached through a lovely grove of pine trees if you are coming from the centre of town. The beach is very developed and the different colour sunshades reflect the different hotels along the seafront. The Dolphin Beach Club is here and parasailing is available.
The main street itself has lots of places to eat and drink as well as a picturesque church perched on it. Just to the south of the village lies the roman villa. On the approach it looks somewhat like a greenhouse. Inside the structure you can actually see the foundations of six rooms and within these some fantastic mosaics. In particular the depiction of Phthoros being assaulted by wild beasts is very impressive. Unfortunately some of the others have been tampered with by thieves.
To the north of the town is what remains of an archaic temple. This is not as memorable as the mosaics and consists of a small area of what looks like an overgrown stone path.

As for kefalonia, it is vey chilled and relaxed were nothing is to much trouble. Locals are friendly and helpful.
The capital Argostoli was devastated by the 1953 earthquake and very few original features remain. Although unlike Zakynthos town it was not rebuilt in its "venetian" style, it has an attractive waterfront which features a colourful fruit market, for farmers to sell their produce.

Overall its a fantastic place, which we will and are going back to

We stayed here for our first time on Kefalonia and it was our first hot holiday in at least 15 years or more so we were nervous about finding the right place. Well we struck gold, it was quiet and relaxing, clean, freindly and our apartment had a full view of the sea! The staff were helpful and freindly and the rooms were kept clean and tidy. We stayed B&B and yes the wasps were hard work but that was a problem for most places in Skala. The choice of three main pools and a little one for tiny tots were clean and never over crowded. We were well aware that the hotel was a long walk to the town, and there is a courtesy bus provided free by the hotel but you need to book early! My only criticism is the local taxi rank. The hotel will ring the taxi rank for free for you, but most of them drive like racing drivers which gets a bit annoying after a while. Bear in mind the 5 euro fee is per taxi, so it's worth sharing to keep your costs down. We were recommended a lovely gentleman of a taxi driver who is not part of the taxi rank "club" and he drives at a normal pace in a lovely car and charges the same, he is Denis Linardatos,[--]. Overall we loved this place and hotel and wouldnt hesitate to go back. Steve & Jo.

Room Tip: Higher apartments mean lots of steps but worth the view and peace and it keeps the beer and food fat...
