Have just returned from the 9 Muses. My husband and I stayed here for one week from the 6th May. The Hotel is great, clean, well maintained and so are the gardens and pool areas. We stayed Bed and Breakfast and found the breakfast to be of a good variety and good quality. The staff here are all very friendly, but a special mention and well done should go to Amanda in the cocktail bar (very friendly, chatty, helpful a great ambassador for the Hotel, Thomson, and Kefalonia!). Would stay here again and would recommend to others without hesitation. (Would not recommend for people with young children as there is little for them to do). We ate out every evening in the town (walking distance), a different place each night, there are plenty of restaurants to choose from to suit budgets and taste. Skala is a great base to stay, but a car is needed if you wish to see more of the island. There is a bus service on the island but could be a bit hit and miss (it is Greece,!) We were also told that the buses don't start running till June.

Room Tip: All the rooms here I think would be okay. A top floor is good, some have a bit of a view. The rooms...

Just returned from our 8th visit and we still love it. The hotel is in a lovely location right by the beach and everyone is so friendly and helpful. We'll definitely be going again. Many guests are visiting year after year so we're clearly not alone in being impressed with the hotel. There have been some changes but I think that's to be expected with the current economic situation in Greece. The breakfast seems to get better each year, with more choice. Would highly recommend it and can't wait to visit again.

Having just returned from the Muses this year, I felt it necessary to add my review. My assessment of a low review does not reflect the staff or the prettiness of the hotel setting and surroundings. No, the low rating reflects the management of this hotel that has, over the years, obviously become disinterested and complacent with no inward investment in the hotel to keep the business evolving and fresh. As a hotel inspector in the UK, I felt it necessary to provide my own input here.

Unfortunately the Nine Muses are in full managerial retreat, shrinking and cutting the services to customers in order to add more profit (however small) to their bottom line. This sort of micromanaging is typical of a hospitality business where the owners have lost interest and commitment, seeing it only as a 'cash cow' representation to provide them the most capital and the least reinvestment. This can be seen clearly in the following: the quality of the food served at the Avra restaurant (the Saganaki fried cheese was saltier than the Mediterranean and inedible. The tomato, mozzarella and basil, consisting of only three ingredients, was served with mint, not basil and no apology indicating a major chef problem), the size of long drink glasses has been reduced to extend the provided quantities and get more return, the 'Happy Hour' for cocktails has reduced from all the drinks on the menu to only a 'select few' on a list and are still more expensive than Skala Town bars serving the same drinks, the maintenance crew (of one man) is overworked having not replaced key additional staff that have left (paint is splashed, grouting is missing, room taps are not fitted properly and have to be full on or off with no in between regulation, balcony doors do not lock creating a security risk, the 'hydro-spa' water jets are not evenly working indicating a pressure or blockage reason), the bar coffee machines that had broken down were not repaired for weeks and during busy periods the staff had to abandon their customers to seek other on site facilities, the menus (when they were finally professionally printed) can't provide some choices from either a stock capacity or due to the restaurant kitchens being closed until the evening (an example of this is the portion of chips that is shown on the lunch menu but not available to order for a snack because the kitchen where it is prepared is closed), the hotels own information leaflets provided in reception are out of date stating services they no longer provide (the gift shop they state that is available is now an office, the Vesta bar does not open for business until an hour after breakfast finishes so obtaining a mid morning drink or a bought bottle of water is not possible, the Avra restaurant is not open all day as stated, although providing a safe deposit box in the rooms they are not free of charge and are quite extortionate in pricing for a two week stay, the Avra is not "fine eating under the stars", each room only has one free complimentary tea/coffee on arrival and not replenished, there is no resident hairdresser as stated, not every room has "breathtaking views of the sea", in fact some have no view of the sea at all), room switching is not always possible as all rooms are allocated by a remote Thomson team in advance and, as the hotel no longer has any rooms available to 'walk in' or private booking customers, switching rooms for a more satisfactory one is extremely difficult.

The Customer Satisfaction surveys, while a key concept to identify the necessary changes needed to improve, unfortunately have four levels of 'good' ("excellent", "very good", "satisfactory", and "fair") and only one "poor" multiple choice answer. This in itself shows an unwillingness to listen to their own internal information gathering on customer satisfaction which will, in all likelihood, based on their desire for profit over satisfaction, be ignored in the long term.

As for the owners themselves, it appears they opt for a high profile visibility around the site. Some may see this as good, having a direct access to the owners, but with only one tier of management, it comes across to the observational customer very differently; that of not trusting their staff to complete their assigned duties without supervision, spying on (female guests especially) and interrupting the guests as they lounge about the pool and apply their sun cream, driving randomly around the hotel in their golf carts with no direct purpose, picking at the flower beds, walking aimlessly around the site and supervising the maintenance man turn plant pots by the main doors to highlight a few witnessed incidents. An owner of a hotel complex such as this should not really be seen to this extent, only being available for high level managerial decision making when needed to keep the services provided to guests running smoothly and efficiently. It is unfortunate that they choose to do the former and decide to micromanage their hotel without trusting their staff, only adding to their operational anxiety and leading to a high staff turnover.

This hotel is looking tired and not moving with up-to-date standards. The only upside is the cleanliness, the bottom line staff (although restricted by this management style) are friendly, eager to help, and the views and environment is stunning.

Overall, it seems to be an expensive holiday for what they provide you and for what services you receive as a final consumer.

On a final note for Thomson travellers, no rep is provided on the coach trip to the airport. If you need any detailed advice or any assistance, this will have to be sought on arrival or prior to leaving the hotel on your return. Kefalonia airport is not the most efficient in the air travel network and, for Thomson, this may prove to be a future problematic issue.

We have stayed at Nine Muses Hotel twice and so far can honestly say this hotel is one of the best we have had the pleasure of staying in. Everywhere is really well maintained and the flowers etc are beautiful .
The rooms are cleaned to perfection and restaurant serves good food.
The hotel is just across the road from a lovely beach and the resort is very close by and full of great restaurants all serving great food . You will be spoilt for choice .
Resort is a little up uphill to get to , so if walking is a problem this slight incline could be a problem.
We hired a car from skala and drove ourselves round this beautiful Island , so much to see , and so much better and cheaper than trips.
The whole island is just stunning and so very relaxing and Nine Muses Hotel is just the icing on the cake !

We stayed at 9 Muses for my best friend's wedding in September 2013, and we had a fantastic time!!
The hotel is so pretty and it's in a great location on the island.
The service from the staff was excellent and as a wedding party, they made us feel very special.
The wedding itself was wonderful, with the staff working hard to make it a fun and momentous occasion.
Nice hotels attract nice people, and that was certainly the case with the 9 Muses. All the guests were very friendly, and some were just as excited to see the bride on the big day as we were!
We had fun chatting to people at the pool (which is a good size and very clean), and even though we could be slightly rowdy at times(!!!) we were always welcomed.
I'm not surprised at all the rave reviews for this hotel - if you're thinking of visiting Kefalonia - stay here!!
