“Nice hotel”
Reviewed 14 July 2014 via mobile

I had not been to this hotel before but found the staff friendly and helpful with possibly the exception of the young barman in the evening. The rooms were clean and pleasant and we were on the 1st floor of the block at the back. Towels changed every 2 days and equipped with a fridge, only downside was no kettle so if you want a cuppa in the morning take a travel kettle.the breakfasts were good and varied. Sometimes I think people have false expectations of hotels and want 5 star treatment when paying 2 star prices. This hotel was good value for money and would I go back? The answer would be yes.

We stayed for a week and after initially being thrilled with the location and appearance of this hotel, we were sadly disappointed with our ground floor room and shared balcony at the rear of the property partially overlooking the next door restaurant / trees, but to the side the caravan shared by the cleaners next to a brick wall used by the smokers. The cleaners were lovely, but not a view I wish to look out on. The balcony was just a shared entrance to the two rooms on ground floor level. We too felt that our room was too dark, especially in the evenings and it was really difficult to see to apply make up in either the bathroom or bedroom. Like a previous report, we too felt that our expression of disappointment was met with resentment and that it created an unpleasant atmosphere with the staff especially the receptionist, who was positively rude and downright nasty to us. Most of the reviews you will read will probably be great as the best rooms are fabulous, but if you are unlucky enough to get a substandard room and the hotel is "fully booked" (or so they said), you are pretty lumbered. We would have felt a lot better if they had even accepted that our room was poor or that there was a price differential between the rooms, but there isn't. The hotel rep was young and very jolly, but totally ineffective. There are much nicer hotels all in the same location. This hotel relies heavily on repeat guests - up to 50% of their allocation and they are extremely friendly towards their repeat customers. We told them that they appear to have differing standards in how they treat their guests. Skala however is simply wonderful - just pick a better hotel.

Room Tip: Don't accept a ground floor room

Just returned from a very much needed relaxing week in the wonderful Kefalonia. We stayed at the Makis and had an excellent room in the back building on the top floor, where you had a view of both the mountains and the ocean (I understand the comments about the ground floor rooms , you need to be on the middle or top floor). We found the room to be basic, but clean and met all our needs for the week e.g safe, air con, fridge. The breakfast was excellent, large choice of fruit, yoghurt, toast, pastries etc. We used the beach rather than the pool, 5 euros for 2 beds and a brolly. From the experience we had of the staff they seemed very friendly. This was our 3rd trip to the island, but first staying at the Makis, we would return as long as we had a room with a view!

Room Tip: Request a room on the top floor, if in the building at the back

We have very high expectations of small & friendly hotels. However this was not to the same excellent standards we have experienced in the past few years. The initial room was dark, dingy and damp, we were moved but I am afraid this was held against us and quite frankly the owners were abrupt and very rude. Skala was beautiful, trips were good but overall we were disappointed.

Sad to say that we left it to late to book at this hotel this year, but we did use the pool area every day on our recent holiday to Skala. Some days we would just lie by the pool on other days we used their sun beds on the beach, and stopped in for a cold beer on the way back to our BB, they will even bring you beer/snacks down to the beach. We have stayed at this hotel twice before and were a bit apprehensive about just using their pool. But Dennis the owner and the rest of the staff could not have been more friendly and accommodating. The welcome was very warm and they understood about not being able to stay there as they were fully booked up. Beer was cold, food was great and the staff very friendly, the music around the pool was just in the background not to loud. Pool and sun bed area was kept very clean. Dennis we will be back, and book up earlier next year so we can stay at your hotel. THANK You for a good time

We have not long returned from a week in the Makis. There was just my husband and I on our first trip to Kefalonia. We were made very welcome by all the staff, who worked very hard to ensure our stay was a good one. The hotel was spotless and cleaned every morning, the room was of a good size and completely suitable for a comfortable holiday. Situated on the sea front and not too long a walk from all the amenities of the village centre we can only say we really enjoyed this experience. Thankyou to Denis and all his staff

Room Tip: top floor rooms are lighter, and have better views

We went to Makis every day to lie by the pool (as our hotel didn't have a pool) and we were made to feel very welcome by Dennis and all of the staff. We ate lunch here also, which was delicious, and I would highly recommend the Club Sandwich! The pool was lovely and clean and I will definitely go back if I am lucky enough to visit Skala again :-)
