Wanting to have an "easy" holiday with someone else doing the arranging, we booked for myself, my wife and 2 boys through Thomson, being recommended the Melidron by their shop in Bath. Never has a recommendation been so accurate and well deserved.
On arrival we were greeted by Zefie who runs the place and shown up to our rooms. We had a family apartment at the back of the hotel overlooking the garden with 2 balconies. The rooms were quiet and provided us with our own sanctuary. There was minimal noise from any other rooms and we were well away from the main road which is about 50 meters from the pool area at the front of the plot the hotel is based on. The road in fact has minimal noise anyway. Air conditioning is the best I have come across pretty well in any hotel I have ever stayed in. It was both quiet and efficient meaning we had a good night's sleep.
Reflecting the comments from other reviews, I have never come across any group of people who work so hard and who are so committed to ensuring their guests have everything they want and need. The rooms were absolutely spotless and cleaned/tidied every day with some lovely pyjama and towel sculptures left each day (have a look at the pictures!). It was just a lovely touch. They concentrated also on getting to know you and your family, again a nice touch as it felt more that you were staying with friends rather than as a hotel guest. The same attitude comes from every member of staff who are friendly and welcoming.
The breakfast was limited but plentiful and well cooked. Importantly the coffee was good! We also ate at the hotel on quite a few lunchtimes whilst being around the pool, concentrating on the Greek specials of the day which were simply excellent! Theo behind the bar was great. If he recommends something with one of the dishes, believe him. Grilled sardines with a salad and iced Ouzo is one of the great meals!
The pool area is smart and although the pool not the biggest (having said that it's not small either) but it's well kept and has plenty of sun beds and tables. There is shade if you want it as well. It is a "family" hotel but there were plenty of couples staying as well and the pool was never noisy when we were there.
There is free wifi in the pool, bar and reception areas as well as on the beach near to the hotel as well! That kept the kids happy!
In and around the hotel, the beach is just 50 meters away a mixture of coarse sand and very small stones. It has plenty of sun beds from a variety of tavernas and hotels on the main road. We had no problem getting more than one no matter what time we went down. Also just 50 meters away is the nearest Taverna and there is a huge variety of eating out options down the road to the village as well as in the village centre.
The Melidron is number one in Skala and this is well deserved. In some ways I don't want others to know about it as it felt like "our" special place. Having looked at other reviews, that is a common theme. Fully and highly recommended and a credit to Zefie and the rest of the guys.
