“Idyllic location on coral island”
Reviewed 30 October 2012

A little dated but charming and right on the beach plus swimming pool. We had a superior terrace room upstairs in the 2 storey blocks. The bedroom and bathroom are large with outside terrace. You have to shower in sea water though and fill the kettle with bottled water. The room wasn't terribly clean when we arrived so we had to ask for the floor to be washed again - I think they have problems getting the rooms ready for new guests in time. Breakfast was good although they allow smoking on the outside covered terrace. The beach is across the road but as there are only horses and carts on the island, there is no traffic noise. We did not eat in the restaurant but had good meals at others along the only road which seem to specialise in barbecued fish and meat with salad, etc all in the deal. It's difficult to swim in the sea as the water is so shallow within the reef but most people go to Gili for the diving. You'll either love it or hate it but for 4 days, we loved it!

We stayed here last July, after scouring the net for places to stay at when in the gilis. On our first day we stayed at Lumbung Seaside as the beach cottage we wanted was fully booked, and we were transferred to the Lumbung Beach Cottage for 2 nights after.

First impression of the sprawling resort, it was amazing. Gili Trawangan itself has amazing views from the beachfront. However, maybe we weren't informed properly, but the beach front isn't exactly a beachfront, you'd have to cross the public main road before getting to the beach. The road is small though, so that is ok.

The afternoon we arrived we ate at what I think is the Waroeng Bule, a cafe facing the main road / beach. Food is delicious and simple, service alright. We can't say much about the food at the resort though as except for breakfast we ventured out to the many restaurants along the main road. The restaurants fronting Beach House and Scallywags were excellent.

As for breakfasts, we have no complains. It was ok, but nothing to shout about. I think generally hotels always need to improve in this particular area.

What can I say about Lumbung Seaside, well..it's clean, big and comfortable. Don't fancy the bed's sharp edges though, a klutz like me definitely walked into it. I liked that they have the loungers outside the room, it's a lovely touch if you want to just chill quietly without going to the pool or beach.

The next day we moved to Lumbung Beach Cottage. It's smaller in size than the Lumbung Seaside, but the point is to be closer to the beach. It was clean, the bed comfy and it has a small ladder that goes up to the loft. The outdoor bathroom was alright, though we had a little problem with some insects flying in.

As with Lumbung Seaside, it has those deck loungers that you could hang out at, hidden from the views of pedestrians on the main road (partially blocked by trees).

As you've already read, the tap water and shower and swimming pool at this resort uses saline water. They provide an earthenware bowl filled with freshwater and bottled water to brush your teeth with. I don't mind it if it's for a few days, it was quite an interesting experience. It does ruin your hair a bit though. At the end of the trip, I think my hair is primed for dreadlocks. And if you use contacts, it's no problem at all swimming in the saline water (it won't dry up your eyes). I have to say the pool is a very cold in the late afternoon though.

Gili Trawangan at that time is sunny but breezy, and in the evenings it does get pretty cold so having a pool that was cold was a bit of a shock to the system. You can't really swim in the sea either (sea is pretty rough) or wade into the sea because of the many seashells that littered that area. So only chance for a proper dip is the swimming pool.

They provide bicycle rentals at the hotel, and definitely one of the best ways to experience and get around the island is to rent a bike. Don't forget to go to the sunset point, have some drinks while watching the sun go down. :)

Nonetheless, I loved the experience and I wouldn't mind coming back again.

Upgraded from the deluxe room to lumbung seaside room $280 AUD per night at an extra $100 AUD per night more than the deluxe room. What an extreme disappointment this was we were lead to believe that there was an upstairs room for our teenage daughter. When we arrived our room had three single beds in it. The room was very clean and neat but if you are paying $280 per night in indo you expect a little more than one room and a salt water shower. Also the seaside was a brisk 300mtr walk from the entrance to our room.
The free wifi was a feature as it was never out of range whilst in the hotel.
The buffet breakfast was also excellent. The staff were friendly and courtious at all times if a little slow but hey your in indonesia and that's the norm.

Room Tip: Don't chose the lumbung seaside rooms as they are a waste of cash save your money and spend it o...

The room was ok,big enough for a couple.
Easy access to sunset point, bars, and restaurant.
There is an atm in front of the hotel, so we dont have to worry if we run out of cash. (Most of restaurants and bars don't accept credit card).
I rented bike from the hotel. The bike was shiny and clean. Not like most of the bike i saw in the street.
Cocktails , pool with ocean view, perfect!
Overall i enjoyed my stay at Villa Ombak.
Totally recommended!

Pluses:
Beautiful landscaping and very attractive swimming pools. Very pretty lighting in the evenings.
Attractively decorated room with comfortable bed and a real functioning safe.
Excellent security including a guard who walked me home to my room when I was alone one late night.
Quiet location but still easy to get to the boat dock when arriving and leaving, and easy to get to all the bars and restaurants to the north, and the sunset beaches to the south.
Nice international crowd.
Great coffee and very good breakfast options, including an egg/omelette station, various hot foods, fruit, juices and more.
Great dive school with professional staff and excellent dive guides with a passion for scuba, especially Evan.
Beautiful beachfront seating.
Delicious Niçoise salad at the beachfront restaurant, yum! And great friendly service at this restaurant too.

Minuses:
Service at reception was slow and somewhat disorganized. Only one gentleman was handling the entire check-out process during a busy time and he was forced to bounce from one guest to the next, occasionally forgetting what he was doing. Hotel needs to add more staff to handle reception.
Very unreliable WiFi access, almost non-existent.
Outdoor shower was beautiful but I got lots of mosquito bites.
Minibar was never refilled.
Saltwater shower and sink were not disclosed on the website and for the price, the lack of freshwater surprised me. That said there was a garden spout for topping up your shower or face-cleansing with some fresh water.
The swimming pools are also saltwater and for the price, this was also surprising to me.

We enjoyed our stay at Hotel Vila Ombak! The room was spacious, the bed was comfortable. It was clean. The shower and toilet were outside but attached to the room. The wall around the toilet and salt water shower was high so it felt private. The hotel breakfast was good as they had a large variety of fresh food. My only suggestions would be to buy some large bottles of water which are cheap on the island as the hotel only provides a couple bottles each and they are gone pretty fast when you brush your teeth. The hotel is on the quiet end of the main strip which is nice. The hotel's restaurant is across the street from the hotel. It was really good. It was my partner's birthday while we were there and they made him a cake and the band sung him happy birthday that night.

We chose Villa Ombak as our stay at Gili Trawangan. The location was good at the beach and it is a kind of resort with many bungalows. Our room was superior and very nice. The furniture was i colonial style and we had a outside shower with a spacious mirror and sink. It felt totally like holiday :). The room was cozy and comfortable and housekeeping very good. Wifi was included for free what I really liked. Out of the shower and everywhere the was saltwater , what I really liked as it is good for the environment not to waste drinking water, and you always get free bottles of drinking water for brushing teethes. There a two nice pools located near the beach and several restaurants. As Gili Trawangan is not that big you can walk nearly everywhere. All in all I would recommend Villa Ombak for staying. We booked via Agoda that is way cheaper than booking direct with Villa Ombak.
