It was probably one of our best experience in Indonesia. The hotel is very nice but the most exciting part was the dives we have made with the Vila Ombak PADI Center. They are providing an excellent quality of service. I truly recommand this place to discover the underwater world...!!! We had a Great Great Time !

I booked one month in advance this hotel for 7 nights through the agency "Hotelopia", paying in advance. When I arrived I discovered that the Hotel Ombak was fully booked and my reservation couldn't be satisfied. They proposed me another hotel very far from the center that I couldn't evaluate in advance.
Now I don't know who's the responsible, if the agency or the hotel, but in my opinion that isn't a behaviour professional for both, even because I payed one month before my departure and nobody informed me that the hotel didn't have availablity and I stayed in a hotel I didn't choice and evaluate before.
So pay attention when you book with HOTELOPIA or directly with Villa Ombak.

This was the only Hotel on Gili Trawangan offered to us by our travel agent in the UK but, as we like to stay in properties with traditional style cottages and something a little different than the bland hotel room, it was ideal. We felt that the price of the rooms was extremely reasonale, particulary by Western standards. In fact the flights were the most expensive part of our trip. We were, however, very dubious about this Hotel, prior to going, due to some of the bad reports on this website. All I can say is that our worries were totally unwarranted. It is a fabulous Hotel, even the locals know it to be the best on the Island. We had a deluxe lumbung hut and although I do agree that the bedrooms are smaller than other properties we have stayed in, they are beautifully decorated and there is plenty of other outdoor space in the huts. Who wants to spend all day in the bedroom anyway? There is air-conditioning, safety deposit boxes, tea and coffee making facilities. What else do you want?

The Hotel was quiet, had the best pool on the island with a swim up bar. The staff were always helpful and friendly. You can buy your own drinks outside the hotel and use their mini bar to store them - there was never a problem. There was in-villa dining at any time of night and day at no additional cost than the restaurant, which is useful when you arrive late at night. There was plenty of choice at breakfast although we did prefer to eat outside the hotel in the evenings. The Beach Hut was our favourite but the food was pretty good everywhere on the Island as there is so much competetion.

The private transfers were well arranged by the Hotel and there is a dive organisation (Ombak Diving Academy) which is close for residents of the Hotel and well run. A few days after we left, they were having a new dive boat delivered which would then give them 2 boats. For anyone wanting to learn to Scuba Dive, the instruction appeared to be excellent.

The beach at Vila Ombak is also very good but, like most of the island, the sea can be very shallow at low tide.

One word of warning, when you arrive and leave the Island, as the only jetty is a little large for most boats, it requires a plod to and from the shore through the sea - can be knee height. The same applies when you visit the nearby Islands of Gili Meni and Gili Air which is really easy to do although, beware, there is only one ferry a day so don't miss it. You might have to share the trip with your feet on the cargo (cocunuts in out case).

We loved the Island (and we have visited many tropical Islands in both the South Pacific and in the Indian Ocean). Although it was a little scruffier outside of the Hotel than the prestine resort Islands of the Maldives, ypou have to remember that is an Island inhabited by the locals and it all adds to the fun. Having no cars was wonderful although you have to watch out that you aren't run over my the local cimodos (pony and cart) or bikes ridden precariously by the tourists.

Being the first Hotel on the Island, Vila Ombak sits in mature grounds and is better established than other properties on the Island. The grounds are also extremely well maintained. It is in a nice location, being at the end of the strip, so it is far enough away to be quiet but close enough for the eateries, bars and nightlife.

The only down side was that the showers and running water are saline but the water was very hot and there was a small fresh water butt next to the shower complete with a coconut ladle to wash the salt off. There was also a fresh water tap but the fresh water was cold. The reason for the saline water is that the Island has to import fresh water and by using saline, it keeps the hotel room prices down. I have to say we chose this Island and hotel because it was reasonably priced and I am surprised that there have been comments that the hotel is overpriced. I am sure you can get much cheaper acommodation elsewhere on the Island, but you get what you pay for. Vila Ombak was clean and bug free with the exception of tiny ants if you left anything sticky or any fruit around. We stayed 2 weeks, did lots of diving, explored the other Gili Islands and felt totally relaxed the moment we stepped on the Island. We are definately definately going back.

Probably one of the best in the island.

Pros
• Very welcoming and responsive staff
• Large territory set in lush greenery
• Spacious well-equipped room and bathroom with balcony (we stayed at lumbung hut)
• Quiet and comfortable atmosphere
• Yummy breakfast (a big choice of everything)
• The overall concept of the hotel (numerous minor details making stay in the hotel a pleasure)
• Big pool (for those who find it valuable in Trawangan)

Contras
• The room cleaning is not that perfect
• Salty water shower (this was not a surprise for us). Probably, the only noticeable hotel's drawback. However, there is a tap fresh water.

If staying in Trawangan, we would definitely choose this hotel again.

Our stay at Hotel Vila Ombak was amazing. Excellent location handy to numerous good bars and restaurants. The Hotel grounds and pool area were maintained to a high level with plenty of seating options to enjoy the sun. We stayed in a Superior Lumbung Hut and while there is newer accommodation available our Hut was surrounded in establised garden which made for a quiet, private stay. The Hut had option of a day bed plus loungers on the terrace and while the room itself was not spacious it was more than adequate. The outside bathroom and ladder to gain entry didn't take long to get used to and made the stay all the more delightful - how often to you get pigeons in your bathroom at home! The saltwater shower wasn't an issue and fresh water was available to rinse with. All in all our stay was very pleasant with friendly. helpful staff - we would return.

Villa Ombok was a great hotel. We moved here after a unsuccessfull stay at Bale Sampan supposed luxury bungalows. Villa Ombok has a resort type feel with a big pool and loungers and pretty self contained and a few activities to keep you busy.

Rooms are great and the location is set between some great places to eat. We had no real faults except with the reception service. There seems to be staff everywhere except on the reception where they most need them. They seemed completely out of their depth and chaotic. Breakfast was average. But it wasn't enough to put us off staying there again. Has a nice feel to the whole resort.

Even had hammocks on the balcony area which sold it for me and no noise whatsoever.

I decided to treat myself and my partner when I booked a room at Villa Ombak for New Year 2008. Everything was nice, but it was too much and way too expensive for that island. I felt like we were "missing the point" by staying there and being charged too much for what we really needed. We had to pay $50 for a mandatory New Year Eve's dinner, which we did not even stayed at because we felt too segregated in an exclusive event for "rich people" while locals where lining up in the street to look at us and the party was clearly elsewhere on the island. Everything was ok, but I just felt it was not worth it. There are so many cheaper, friendlier options on Gili Trawangan. The place has grown even bigger in the last year and I feel it lost some of its charm (new rooms are not traditional huts anymore, etc) and prices have increased significantly too. However, if you want the top luxurious resort on the island, it is probably the place to go. But I would look around first before booking. One important thing to note is that Villa Ombak has a medical clinic (the only one on the island) and also hosts the only ATM.
