“Excellent Holiday Hotel”
Reviewed 9 April 2012

This was our second stay at the Mogan Playa and again we thoroughly enjoyed both the hotel and resort.
We had two adjoining rooms which were structured so that our rooms were accessed through one door, leading to a small entrance hall with two additional room doors for privacy. The rooms are comfortable, but as we found on our previous visit, the beds are rather hard, so following other TA reviews, we requested mattress toppers which greatly improved the comfort.
The room is equipped with satellite TV and DVD player, but my gripe with this is that, yet again, the only English TV channels are BBC World and CNN, while there are extensive ranges of German, italian, French and Dutch - something the hotel management should review.
The hotel has two pools both of which are well maintained with enough sunbeds for everyone. One drawback however of the pool next to the hotel main building is that one side of the pool is in shadow until around midday, so if you like early morning sunshine you have to get in quick for the sunny side of the pool. Pool towels are provided at the pool side by the attendant and you are requested not to 'reserve' sunbeds, but of course this does tend to be ignored by a minority.
The breakfast buffet is extensive and caters for all possible options. The service is good and tables cleared very quickly.
We again opted for the B&B option as the resort has a very good selection of restaurants by the harbour/marina. The hotel is a pleasant 10 min stroll from the harbour and the town is peaceful and quiet even later at night, with no clubs or loud bars pounding out music (showing my age here I guess!!) A lot of the restaurants are Italian, but there are some good seafood restaurants or ones serving traditional Canarian food. The ones we used were of good quality and prices in general are on a par with the UK. Fortunately there are no 'English -style' pubs or restaurants, so you actually feel like you are in another country.
If you are interested in shops, there is a small Mall opposite the hotel which has a useful supermarket, and there are some shops in the town itself. On Fridays, there is a local market in the pedestrian area near the hotel
We really enjoy our holidays at the Mogan Playa and intend to return again.

This a very well run hotel. The service is excellent all round. The hotel grounds are superbly appointed and maintained. The bedrooms are well maintained and clean. Sometimes they can be cleaned rather late in the day. There were no tea making facilities provided so we asked for a travel kettle which was immediately provided by Reception. Tea bags, milk, lemon may be obtained from the breakfast buffet. Restaurant staff cannot do enough to help and serve you. The food is served buffet style and is good and varies from day to day. I found the meals to be quite plain in taste, whereas I prefer them to be a little bit spicier. But that literally is a matter of personal taste. During our stay the restaurant changed the second dinner sitting to start at 2030. This was too late for us and the earlier sitting of 1800 was too early. We swapped our dinner option to a lunch option and ate out in the evenings in the charming harbour area of Puerto Mogan at a more convenient time. It was nice to be waited on and also we avoided the hustle and bustle of the buffet.
As for relaxation this was no problem. There were plenty of poolside sunbeds available and we just soaked up the sun whenever we wished.
All in all this was a very enjoyable stay at the Cordial Mogan Playa hotel.

Room Tip: Email the hotel before you leave home and request a room with a south-facing balcony if you like to...

We stayed at Mogan Playa in March 2012 and had an amazing time. We were a bit worried that we were going to expect too much given all of the great reviews that we had read, but truly were not disappointed.

The grounds truly are beautiful. There is lots of place to walk around when you aren't lying around the pool, basking in the sun.

We traveled with our 2 infants which can always be difficult, but were really pleased with the set-up of the room. We stayed in a Jr Suite, which was excelent. 2 cots, complete with bedding and pint-sized pillows were in the room waiting for us and made up, with the kids dolls every day. The fridge in the Suite was very handy for the baby's milk etc. Given that we were with the 2 babies, we had made a special advanced request to have a south facing room where we may enjoy the sun in the afternoons whilst the kids were sleeping... they completely delivered. Highly recommend room 9121... great south facing balcony, very private with 2 sun chairs, plus table and chairs! Could not have asked for more! Be forewarned however, that this is on the second floor, and there are no lifts in the Jr Suite areas, so if you have a pram it can be a bit of a pain... we personally thought it was worth it!

The food was quite good, although dinner time could be quite hectic... we chalked this up to the kids mostly. The people all very nice. The resort and the rooms were maticulously clean.

We had an amazing time and would go back again, and recommend to our friends. The only negative I would say is lack of wait-staff around the pools and the warm dining area, but truly I would not let either of these things deter me from returning!

Room Tip: South facing junior suite!

This is one of the best hotels I've stayed in; clean, stylish, with lush gardens scattered throughout the complex but without appearing brash or too over the top. Not sure why it does not merit 5 stars, rather than the four it seems to get in First Choice brochures.
We were staying half board, with breakfast and dinner being buffet style. The choice of food was good and, critically for buffet service, sufficiently hot and always being replenished. First Choice travel agents say in their literature that there are also two a la carte restaurants, but this is a tad misleading since they are not an immediate alternative to this buffet service. The main a la carte restaurant is also open to the public, is small and therefore competition for tables can be intense and it is very expensive. There are several bars, small dining areas etc dotted throughout the complex.

The grounds are a mosaic of accommodation blocks, sports facilities etc set amongst lush gardens that give a very pleasant atmosphere.

The village/resort retains a decent charm but it is dominated by cafes and holiday apartments. All the cafes looked very reasonable. I suspect that a piece of waste land next to the hotel will soon sprout another hotel complex which will slightly spoil the overall vista, but that's progress!

This is NOT the resort to go to if you want family fun razamatazz (water chutes, theme parks etc) but that sort of thing is in relatively easy reach in other nearby resorts (including Taurito next door). It is definitely a place to go for a good, relaxing break!

The village is at the end of the south coast chain of holiday resorts and your own transport is desirable if you want to explore the rest of the island. Building work suggests that the south coast motorway is about to reach Puerto Mogan. Even so, we could still reach the capital Las Palmas in our hired car in an hour, so the whole island is accessible.

A word of warning about car parking: the hotel has two underground car parks, which seemed to have plenty of spaces but, being built under the hotel, there are numerous concrete supporting pillars that need negotiating and some of the spaces are quite narrow. Don't book a massive hire car! We coped OK in our Nissan Micra.

Room Tip: The rooms are in numerous accommodation blocks scattered throughout the complex, each being no more...

Evening entertainment was a bit hit and miss.

Having returned a few days ago from a week at this hotel we can honestly say that we agree with the numerous positive comments already made. The hotel is efficiently run and very comfortable; it is stylish without being pretentious.
In particular we liked the architecture of the buildings and the landscaping of the gardens. The Moorish theme with plants, water and mosaics is formal and elegant in places but also allows for informal and secluded areas with palms and other abundant greenery. In the more formal garden areas botanical specimens are named.
Careful thought and attention to detail is evident everywhere around the hotel. Bedroom areas are roomy and the provision of mattress toppers on request gives greater choice for those who prefer softer beds. We hired a kettle from reception for the week. Milk etc can be got at the supermarket across the road or at the Spar, nearer the port, but only in the1 litre size ( or so we found). The minibar in the room is for keeping things cool, it's not a full fridge, so the milk didn't keep quite so long and I'd have preferred the half litre size.
The hotel has an environmentally friendly policy. For example waste water is recycled for use in the gardens. There is also evidence of care for animals, while providing a practical solution to their presence in the grounds. Facilities for cats, with feeding dispensers, litter area etc, are under a stairwell. It is all kept very clean and tidy. Moreover, the cats are healthy and definitely not feral, as a previous reviewer suggested. If they sometimes appear a bit aloof, well they are just being cats!!
Our only mild criticism is about the timing of dinner. With staff working over two sittings we can understand that neither sitting can be too lengthy, but we like to linger over our meal with a bottle of wine( we don't drink much outside this time) and the wonderful variety and quality of the food available also meant we didn't want to rush. Other people clearly felt the same and one evening several of us were asked, very politely, to finish as it was10 pm (the second sitting started at 8.30). Although one and a half hours is quite reasonable in one way, it does take time going round the various food stations in the large restaurant especially if it is busy, and eating/conversation time is consequently affected.

Room Tip: Higher floors on blocks facing souh-west are sunnier.
