“Great Hotel let down by poor entertainment”
Reviewed 8 October 2013

This was our third visit in a year to Cordial Mogan Playa Hotel having been September 2012, April 2013 and September 2013. Whilst we still love the setting, cleanliness, food, pool areas, availability of sunbeds etc. there were a couple of let downs on this occasion. The entertainment consisted of reps miming to Grease and Chicago very badly along with a few very average groups and flamenco. Previously, we have enjoyed a fantastic quartet (Il Divo style tribute) and Chinese Acrobats which were both quality entertainment. The 'quality' now is letting the hotel down! Also, what was memorable on previous visits was that at our final meal the management must have had a list of people about to leave and came round personally to shake hands and thank you for choosing to stay at this hotel. This was a lovely touch, but did not happen on this occasion!

Having said the above, I would still return, although will give a couple of years break to try elsewhere!

Room Tip: Block 2 high level rooms overlooking the pool area get evening sun on balconies!

Wow, what can we say? Well done Cordial Mogan Playa - we cannot praise you enough. This hotel is excellent and we cannot understand some of the negative comments....all we can say is that some people must be very, very difficult to please. We have stayed in many hotels in different countries, including Canada and the USA and this hotel has to rate as one of the best hotels we have encountered. The cleanliness was superb, both room and communal areas - even the sun loungers had a thorough clean during our week's stay, which is something we have never encountered before. Our room was very spacious and exceeded our expectations. The gardens were stunning. The staff were very pleasant and hard working. Our breakfast time was certainly not chaotic, as we were fortunate enough to be able to have our breakfast in the smaller restaurant overlooking pool 2. The only problem we had was deciding what to eat as there was sooo much choice. There was plenty of entertainment around the pool area, particularly aqua aerobics which was very well supported by guests. If some of the guests who have complained about Pool 1 being too quiet then they should have moved and found a seat around Pool 2 instead of complaining about having 'more fun in an old folks' home'!!! We too were on the first sitting for our evening meal but we didn't find it chaotic at all - we usually arrived at about 6.45p.m. Yes, there were people milling around wondering what to eat because, again, there is sooo much choice but once we decided what we wanted to eat we didn't have to wait long before we were served and the vegetables were a couple of steps away from the meat. The food was definitely NOT bland as a recent reviewer has said, in fact we would say that there was a superb choice of both hot and cold foods so much so that it reminded us of the choices and quantities you get on a cruise ship. Having stayed in a hotel in Cape Verde last year where there was a similar set up for dining, the Cordial Mogan Playa far, far exceeded the quality and choice of that hotel. If it's lively nightlife you are after then this hotel is not for you. We shall definitely be revisiting this hotel in the future.

Just returned from staying here for a week,Overall we thought this was a very good hotel but could be excellent if they could fix the the chaos at both breakfast and evening meal times,
The hotel covers a very large area, and is very clean and has well kept grounds the only negative here was the signage which could be better,The rooms were large and spacious, again another negative is paying extra for the safe in the room which normally comes standard with rooms in larger hotels,The quality and range of choice of the food was excellent however at times during breakfast and evening meal it was utter chaos due to the number of people trying to get into the buffet and also due to the floor plan of the food layout, which I think should be managed better also they have a rule stating no shorts to be worn and no flipflops at evening meal times however there were men walking about in shorts and wearing flipflops at these times. The staff were all very polite and efficient, I was disappointed to read a previous report where the visitor arrived late and was offered a lunch at their choice, we also missed our meal on arrival but were not offered a lunch.Again even with these problems we enjoyed our holiday but it could easily have been much better

Great rooms. Terrific gardens. Tireless cleaning staff. Spotless. Quiet. Very quiet. But! The dining room is a disaster. Early sitting/late sitting? Does not matter. There is a frantic body of people scurrying from one food station to another. Queue for the roast followed by a dash to the vegetables. Wait in a queue again. Deserts. Quite the most pathetic sorry looking array of unimaginative lumps of pastry to be found anywhere. Mousses (any colour, any shape) every night. As for breakfast time .... If you like toast hard luck. 20 minute wait if your lucky. Egg station? forget that one. Manic.
The hotel is too sprawling for the infrastructure to cope with. Two sittings for evening meal? Are we at school or on holiday? Mousses every night? What next? rice pudding and sponge and custard?
Beware if you are in the executive apartments. Lovely rooms but hemmed in. No views at all. Plus, if you are staying near the 'Fish Walk' you will be entertained by the noisy Spanish band that plays every night 9 'till midnight.

Room Tip: Block 4 High room

Dear Valued Guest,

We would like to thank you for the concern you have shown us through your observations.

We sincerely apologize, if in any way, we did not meet your expectations. We take all our guest comments very seriously as these help us to achieve the standards that we strive to please our treasured guests.

We accept the mistake of not having anticipated a change in the type of guest (arrival of the winter customer) that we normally have it estimated for the end of October. As we do not have appreciated this change, we had not proceeded to change the summer schedule to winters, and it has made a bottleneck in the peak hour of the restaurant. Rest assured that the aforementioned issue was an uncommon incident and actions have been taken.

We hope that this incident does not diminish your favorable regard of Cordial Mogan Playa and we are looking forward to serve you again.

Any other comments or suggestions you may have will be appreciated. We remain at all times at your service.

Sincerely yours,

The Management

After reading all the good reviews i must say i was a little disappointed with certain areas of the hotel which with a bit of attention could be improved.

Firstly the hotel is much larger than i imagined and is spread over a very large area.

We arrived late evening (missed our meal) and greeted by reception with a glass of cava.
They directed us to a small room where we helped ourselves to a nice selection of cold meats etc.

They told us cos we were late we could have a free lunch one day which we had on our last day as it was a late flight. Shower room provided free of charge.

Overall reception were excellent.

Room - 3 floors up overlooking pool 1. and was fine.

Pool 1 - Sun does not come up till about 10-00 and then only certain beds get it as the area is very enclosed. I have seen more atmosphere in a old folks home , but hey thats what some people want peace and quiet.

Pool 2 - Gets much more sun and is the home of the animation team - still quite laid back and very enjoyable.

Gardens - excellent.

Entertainment - pool bar low key hardly anyone watching
- main stage area on too late at 10-00 sub standard acts.

Bars - all low key

Hotel structure - very impressive.

Main Restaurant -

Breakfast - sit where u want - if you get there before 8-15 you will miss the rush . Its a good break fast but the layout is poor so u are dashing all over the place to get bits and bobs . as time goes on it gets very busy staff loading up food stations people looking for stuff - feeding time at the zoo.

Evening meal - Here is where restrictions come in to play - you arrive and have to make your mind up early sitting 6-00 till 7-30 or late 8-30 till 10-30. When you get to restaurant you are given table number for the length of your stay.

We went at about 6-45 it was still busy but we missed the first feeding frenzy.

Do not expect a lovely ambience or expect to be made to feel special cos it wont happen.

You walk in and the managers (4) have a job to greet you.

You sit down and eventually a waitress asks you what drinks and you pay cash or it goes to your room.

W e paid cash - You also get a different waiter each night - one of these men is a right jobs worth.
We didnt find them friendly at all probably cos there didnt seem enough of them.

As for the food i am easy to please , i usually had freshly cooked meat so it was hot , unlike some of the other cold / luke warm stuff on offer.

I found the food bland and tasteless and hated the chaotic atmosphere so much that we ate out quite a few times.

Room Tip: pick a higher floor so you clear the trees

I have just returned on 26th Sept from a marvellous week in this great hotel.

I have never seen grounds so beautiful in any hotel I have ever stayed at. The staff are second to none and nothing was too much trouble for them. As I like a shaded balcony I was given room 1043 in the building next to reception which was ideal.

The amount of choice in the restaurant was more than I have ever come across and as I am very picky this was great for me. I look forward to returning to this hotel sometime in the future. I have no problem at all in recommended this hotel.

We would return again Lynda0205. That's probably because we love the nothing to do, no noisy discos and bars etc etc that are to be found in Puerto Rico. Puerto Mogan is a lovely Spanish feeling resort which we love. There are some lovely bars and restuarants a wonderful market each Friday, a sea ferry that takes you to all the other major bays along the coast and a great bus service that gets you to anywhere along the southern coast as far as Las Palmas. The Mogan Playa is far the best hotel on the Island that we have seen, set in beautiful gardens with two excellent swimming pools. Not a high rise in sight and no having to be a mountain goat to reach it as is the case with many hotels in Gran Canaria. The staff are very welcoming. friendly and helpful. Be sure to go to the Managers cocktail party! you can talk to any of the managers there ( they all attend) and voice suggestions should you have any. The hotel is spotlessly clean the only litter to be seen being leaf litter from the what feels like a botanical garden, but the gardeners soon take care of that. The two sitting system in the restuarant works well as it means that you have your own table for the duration of your stay and if you wish to change your sitting at any time this is quite easily done as is swapping dinner for lunch if you so desire. One warning though if you do choose the second sitting, do not leave it too late as you risk missing some of the lovely carvery roasts. We have signed up for the loyalty card and we look forward to receiving discounts on a next visit there.

Room Tip: All rooms have some appeal but the ones over looking either pool have the best outlook
