“Just ok”
Reviewed 9 April 2014 via mobile

We stayed at the Cordial mogan playa a couple of weeks ago; 2 couples in our early and late 30s.

Overall an OK stay but few things to point out.

When we checked in we didn't have the best welcome experience, she hardly explained anything. Over the week we meet other receptionist which were so much nicer.

The dinner system where you get allocated to a certain timing, choice of 2, is something I have never seen before and is just so not flexible plus you end up with endless queues all over the buffet. The food quality is actually not bad however there are so many people that the dinner experience is just not nice at all. Most nights we swapped for lunch and the venue is different and although the options are fewer we found the quality much nicer.

If you want to use the safe the charge you 2.60 per day; I have never been in a hotel that charges you to use the safe.

Breakfast is lovely although again, crowded.

The rooms a re slightly old fashion but clean and tidy.

The pool area is actually the best part of the hotel, we went always to the one closer to the lunch restaurant and found it lovely and peaceful. the guy that comes around for the drinks was the best out of the entire hotel; great customer service. Even though the hotel seemed quite full (at least judging from breakfast and dinner) then at the pool there was not so many people.

In general an OK stay.

We stayed for a week in early April. We have stayed in and around Puerto Mogan on a number of occasions before but this was the first time at Mogan Playa. Previous reviews are largely accurate and the hotel is a very solid 4-start establishment. The rooms are well thought out and spotless although the beds were too soft for our taste. Coffee and tea-making facilities are not provided so take your own travel kettle or rent one from the hotel. There is also a curious ritual whereby you are 'issued' 2 pool towels on check-in and have to return them at check out which grates a little; presumably, there is a 'history' to this ritual but it seems odd in a quality hotel.

We chose half board which involved buffet meals for breakfast and dinner. There is an excellent selection of food for all tastes and nationalities. Quality was sound and staff were very good, friendly and patient.

Staff were excellent throughout the hotel and our room maid was outstanding and very helpful. The only minor irritation was bar service during busy periods (pre-dinner and during entertainment/cabaret) when staff were quickly overloaded and service could become slow.

Evening entertainment varied from excellent to dire although, in fairness, you don't choose a hotel for the evening entertainment. The cabaret bar is poorly designed and huge pillars obstruct the view of the stage from most areas of the room. The Mama Mia show was bad enough to be hilarious (everything was mimed to a soundtrack which, itself, had out-of-key sections!!).

The gardens in and around the hotel complex are exquisite and are meticulously maintained. It was a real pleasure to walk through them. The 2 pools are large and well designed. The water temperature was perfect. The are plenty of sunbeds despite the best attempts of the usual suspects with early morning towels. We never had a problem at any time of day. Also, despite my earlier comments about evening bar service, the hotel has a very efficient electronic call system in place by the pools and this worked very well.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Mogan is a delightful harbour/marina without any of the coarseness of some other Gran Canaria resorts. There is a range of excellent restaurants to suit all tastes and purses when you tire of hotel food. The Mogan Playa Hotel is a short walk from the harbour. We will be back and, with only a couple of minor niggles, we recommend the hotel for a comfortable and relaxing holiday.

I have been here 6 times now. It's always great, clean, friendly and the food is good.
The weather has always been warm Puerto Mogan is a beautiful place and the harbour just a short walk with lovely restaurants.
I have stayed both full board, full board plus and half board the plus only meaning drinks with your
meals. So if you want lots of drinks during the day these are at a cost. I have decided because we enjoy eating out at the harbour so much in future we will only go half board you can swap your evening meal for lunch.
I have travelled to a lot of places and I keep returning here it's a really good place to recharge the batteries very relaxing. I always request a topper on our bed as I personally find the beds a little firm.
This place has become so popular now it is 4 + star
I also like the fact the hotel policy is that you don't have to fight for sun beds they take the towels off the beds when inconsiderate people leave towels but don't use the beds. So no getting up at the crack of dawn!

My husband and I stayed at the cordial mogan player last year at the end of March and had such a lovely stay decided to return at around the same time. We have just arrived home and this time the holiday was even better!
The staff are amazing, always smiling and helpful and charming. The rooms and grounds are immaculately clean and a real credit to the staff that work there.
The food has also improved, not that it needed to, great quality and freshly prepared.
This year some friends travelled with us and we both had minor problems in the room, light bulbs gone for instance, one mention to reception and the problems were immediately rectified.
We couldn't recommend this hotel highly enough and will certainly be returning.

Firstly I want to point out to all the people who have slated this hotel in various ways...worn towels, a bit of dust, a broken bulb, a poor view,a little mess on a carpet!,.....Get a life....you get what you pay for. This is a 4 star as it states itself. Not 4+ not 5, a four!!! I went there with my elderly parents and have seen the Four stars outside the hotel main entrance for myself. Yes there is the odd broken light fitting or a mess on a carpet and I am sure the maintenance dept is aware of these little faults and are working as hard as possible to fix them. For those people it did bother, this hotel is obviously not for you or your champagne lifestyle. Personally, I think it offers exactly what you expect from a 4 star. The staff are knowledgeable, personable without being intrusive. The rooms a large enough, well appointed, and smart...its only a room! I only used it to sleep in.........after all, I am on holiday!!! Mogan itself is quaint and charming with a lovely marina and working harbour. We had two rooms on the third floor of block 4 which received the sun on the balcony from about mid day onwards. Although the hotel has lots of rooms, its architecture, and layout feel just a small Canarian Village with beautiful fountains, gardens and courtyards .

There was a good variety of good quality food available both at breakfast and in the evening. Peak time was at about 9 oclock a.m and p.m.

Evening buffet meal is an allocated table affair so it doesn't matter what time you come in during the sitting slot you have chosen. The food on the evening buffet is of a good quality, and there is lots of freshly cooked meat and fish available as well as a range of other dishes to try.
In Summary:

Service: When we stayed at this hotel the service was excellent. Staff at the reception are very friendly never rushed you.

Room/Sleep Quality: Excellent, rooms cleaned spotlessly daily.

Cleanliness: Very clean indeed, you would be hard pressed to spot a single bit of dirt!

Location: The location is brilliant! It was extremely close to the harbor where all the bars and restaurants are located.

Breakfast & Dinner: The food was excellent and varied! There were so many different choices, and the staff who were serving the meats are ever so friendly.

Overall this is a truly wonderful hotel set in its own little piece of paradise, I think that this hotel and all it has to offer its suitable for anyone! The people who gave this hotel bad reviews are talking absolute rubbish! This was a dream short 1 week break for me and my seventy something parents. We will definitely be going again!.....Jan 2015 I think.

Room Tip: Blocks 3, 4 or 5 choose a room on floors 4 or 5 for excellent view of hotel, surrounding area and po...

Stayed for a week at the end of March 2014 and loved every minute of our stay. Food wonderful, friendliest staff we have ever encountered anywhere, they all seemed to genuinely enjoy working at this hotel. Most beautiful grounds and spotlessly clean, we have no negative comments to make at all. Hope to return later in the year.
John & Mo. (London)

Room Tip: We had a 1st floor suite in J block which had sun all afternoon and was also quiet.

This was our second visit. According to the net the hotel was fully booked but we contacted the booking office and they could take us for 6 of our 9 nights on Gran Canaria. Our second hotel was a high rated and pretty up market one in Maspalomas but it wasn't a patch on Mogan Playa. It only confirmed to us how well thought out and run this hotel really is. The staff are spontaneously friendly and seem to genuinely enjoy themselves with the visitors. The entertainment is plentiful but kept inside and well sound- proofed so you don't have to listen if you don't choose to. All areas of the hotel are spotless. There are lots of small grouped areas - rather than big open spaces packed with loads of people- which gives it a smaller, cosy feel. We had lunch by the pool one day and the food was simple but fresh and tasty. We stay b&b so can't comment on the half or full board food but the breakfast is excellent - one of the best we've ever had. We have eaten in the a la carte restaurant Los Guayres and that was very good too. The double rooms are a good size - ours had a balcony overlooking the pool with the cliffs to both sides and a glimpse of the sea over the rooftops. A nice mixture of sea and hills. The grounds and gardens are lovely to wander round too. My only complaint would be that we made our bed up as a double but everytime the maid came she put it back to two singles. Absolutely recommend but not all at once please - we want to come back next year ;) I've also recommended the hotel to my sister - she's a wheelchair user and I often scope out places for her when abroad. The hotel has contact numbers for hiring motorised chairs plus ramps and lifts in abundance. I've not seen the disabled rooms but imagine the same attention to detail has been given to these. It's about 1 km to the beach but down a lovely tiled pedestrian street - only one road to cross and there is a nice promenade with lots of accessible restaurants so a breeze in a motorised chair.

Room Tip: Top floor rooms around the reception areas have the best views.
