“Decent budget option near the Historic Center of Macau”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 March 2013

We recently spent a couple nights at the budget-friendly, New Nam Pan Hotel (Guesthouse) and found this to be an decent budget friendly option for those seeking to stay near the Historic Center of Macau.

This budget hotel is located at Avenida de D.Joao IV NO.8 2 andar, just a few minutes walk from the main street leading into Senado Square. Bus 3 (MOP3.2 per person) drops off on the opposite side of the hotel from the Outer Harbor Ferry Terminal, just a 4-5 minute ride.

Pros:
They have an English hotline: 00853-28482842 ( 8:00am-7:00pm day time) and respond to English email very quickly at macauhotel@yeah.net. It seems English speaking staff are always on sight as well, very helpful when trying to inquire about room availability.

They were also highly responsive, answering our email inquiry within 24 hours.

Location was nice, very near to Margaret's Cafe e Nata and Caravela, two places we really enjoy having breakfast in Macau. Hotel is around an 8-10 minute walk to the Historic City Center as well. Also, bus service is available nearby to/from the Outer Harbor Ferry Terminal. Also, free shuttle service to City of Dreams is available just outside the nearby Sintra Hotel, 2 minute walk from the New Nam Pan Hotel.

Room is spacious enough for two people with ensuite bathroom, television (very basic and only 1-2 English channels), ok beds and bathroom. They can hold luggage for you behind the front desk as well.

Free wifi that was quite good during our stay and there are two free computer terminals available in the small lobby area.

Cons:
Up three flights of stairs to the New Nam Pan Hotel (Guesthouse)

A real no-frills room and bathroom experience: Beds are a bit hard and not very long, could be a problem for tall visitors or those with need for soft mattresses. No safe in the room, no breakfast and no room cleaning. No exhaust in the bathroom, made the room quite humid after showers. Toilet flush was a bit weak and the shower didn't drain well.

Very small outside lobby area and lack of entertainment made the room basically a place for sleeping only, not really a place to hang out before/after sightseeing.

A bit pricey for what you get - weekday (MOP580) and weekend (MOP780) for a double room. However, considering the lack of good budget and hostel options throughout Macau as well as the very good location, it seems ok.

Overall, we found the New Nam Pan Hotel to be a decent option for those visiting Macau, requiring budget accommodations. Its not great here but it won't cost nearly as much as what you might spend elsewhere.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the street might be a bit noisy.

Just about a 5 minute walk from the Grand Lisboa, this is perfect base if you want to be central. It's also close to the Senado Square, about 10 minute walk.

We got a triple room that is sized just right, not cramped. Beds are a BIT on the hard side. They also have slippers you can use, hangers for your clothes, towels and tissues. The flush though was not working well.

Aside from that we enjoyed our stay. :)

I stayed there with a cousin on 9th Feb to 12th Feb 2013... on the first night, my hand was bitten by an insect. I woke up and search the whole bed to find a bed bug running about under the pillow. I killed it with a tissue paper and showed the hotel staff next morning. The girl there said ok noted we will spray your bed. But nothing was done. and so every nite I got bitten by the bed bugs.,,,, For the rest of the remaining 2 nights, I am unable to find the bug. Since bed bugs are highly infectious and spread easily by hiding in belongings or have eggs laid on them, I have to soak all my things in hot water when I reach home. Some items got damanged due to that. I will not recommend this hotel to anyone. Price wise not that cheap.. the same numbers of night with Grandview Hotel price difference is S$150 in total on a later check. Everything in the hotel room is damaged. Please do not stay in this hotel if you have a choice.

I will not delve on the condition of the place, given it is budget accommodation.
But what I do not expect from any hotel, no matter how cheap is a bedbug infestation!

On my first night, I caught a live bedbug in the bed because I felt a bite and searched the mattress. I squashed it, all bloodied, showed the remains to the staff in the morning. They didn't seem to realise the severity of the infestation, said they will spray the room, which they didn't. We were already infected, so no amount of complaint would solve the situation. So we bore with it till wloyr departure, with plans to quarantine and disinfect all belonging once we reach home.

For those of you who know bedbugs, you will know that once you are exposed, you could be carrying eggs and possible bugs in your belongings. And bedbugs are something you don't want to bring home from a holiday.

We stayed at New Nam Pan for 3 days in our Macau trip and I must say that if you are traveling on a budget (amidst all the more expensive lodgings, hotels and pension houses in Macau), then this is definitely a good find. We were four in a room (4 medium-sized beds, 1 toilet) and we were not cramped at all.

The hotel is Chinese-owned but the staff are mostly Filipinos. There's just a 'funky' smell (probably incense) when you enter (I don't know if it's still like that) but other than that, we liked this place for its cozy feel and homey ambiance. The Filipino staff (1 receptionist, 1 other assistant) were also kind to accommodate our luggages after we checked out, and even helped us around Macau by telling us where to go, etc.

It's also near the big casinos (Lisboa, etc) and about 10-minutes walk from Senado Square.

I'd recommend this for budget travelers. :-)

Very nice hotel. I love it. It's quite closed to senado square and easy to walk around. Anyway the flush didnt work well so it should be a bit improved.

We stayed for 2 nights there for 3 pax (680HKD). The location was good. Just opposite Grand Lisboa, so you could just take the free shuttle to Grand Lisboa and walk a few minutes to New Nam Pan Hotel. It's a cozy place. You have to climb the stairs all the way up. So tiring! They haven't prepare the room when we arrived and we had to wait a while. I reserved for a room with 3 single beds but they gave me a room with 2 single beds and added another single bed. The room was large enough but the mattress was hard. Fresh towels everyday. The day staff was helpful and the night staff, an old uncle, he talks alot O.O They have free wifi and you can even use their computer. The wifi in the room is very weak. Almost no signal at all. If you need anything eg. hairdryer, extra toilet rolls, pillow.. just ask.
