“Away from the hustle & bustle”

Stayed as a family group, As we arrived by hydrofoil from Hong Kong, we were met, & driven straight to Hotel. Past lunch time, but they provided a very welcome lunch for us. Staff are very friendly, & service was great. Rooms excellent, and in the restaurant, the lobster is the best we have ever tasted. Hotel mini bus, took us where ever we wanted, & collected us when we were ready to return. The beach was not very good & was petite, but overall, would thoroughly recommend it.

Room Tip: Sea view is spectacular, especially at sunset

This is a nice historic small hotel in Coloane, the little island furthest from Macau main business area- but Macau is so small anyway. This is very different from the big casino-resort type hotels like Wynn, MO, Sands, Venetician, etc. There is no casino, no shopping within hotel or nearby. But you can get to the action areas via bus or taxi in less than 30 min (I did say Macau is small!). It's in a nice small area overlooking the Chuk Van Beach (with brownish river water), and you can take a short walk there. The hotel is a popular venue for local wedding receptions. There is a restaurant, or you can take a couple of stops to the Coloane 'central' where there are a few restaurants and the famous egg tart place. The actions in Taipa is only 10 min away.

Room Tip: 2 floors, Level 2 is directly below the Terrrace and have a slightly better view overlooking the bea...

The hotel has a lovely setting, close to the beach and a short taxi ride from the Cotai Strip. We were a party of 7 mostly teenagers, younger children and few adults and it suited our needs being close to Macau's attractions in Coloane. The rooms were clean, but some falling ceiling plaster in one room was a bit of a worry. The pool is great and the evening meal very good as was the service. The breakfast was a bit of a disappointment but adequate. If you need to get away from the city or looking for something a bit romantic then this hotel fits the bill.

Room Tip: The higher rooms are bigger but more expensive.

We chose this place because we wanted to get away from the noisy city center.

Our bad experience:

1- When we arrived there was a bic cockroach on the floor near the corner wall.

2- In the bathroom there was a head pillow for the bathtub missing. We were not told and the could not fix it.

3- Our neighboor used the hairdryer at 2am. The problem is that the walls are thin and you can hear a lot!

4- We got up at 7 one morning and there was nobody in the reception our around to take our key/answer our questions

5- We were laying in he pool mid day when we were suddenly told that we could not use it due cause an external group was comming too use it for training!

6- The beach is useless and absolutely horryfing. There is small pieces of glass, garbage and medicine capsules comming in from the Sea! This has nothing to do with the hotel, but just to inform you. We came here in hope to lay at the beach and get a swim.

A lack of serice in this place. Very dissapointing due to the other good reviews we saw before choosing this place. We will never come back and can not recommend it.

Good things;

1- Great green location
2- Cozy atmosphere
3- Ok pool
4- Ok breakfast
5- Charming an decorative rooms

This hotel was likely once a gem, and has the potential to be once again. But at the moment, this hotel is tired, tired, tired. The staff are tired, the rooms are tired and the magic has been exhausted.

After five years of visiting the usual hot spots in Macau, I dedided to get off of the beaten path for a relaxing getaway with my partner.

Upon arriving at the desitnation, everything seemed in order. The location - stunning. The beach, sun, quiet...peace. But upon entering the hotel. It soon became apparent that the building had probably been sitting on the beach for too long.

The hotel proudly displays its' "TripAdvisor travellers' choice award" all over the entrance...which I feel is probably as far as the official reviewers got. This award, and the antique feel and legacy of this hotel unfortunately works to the demise of Pousada de Coloane and offers little incentive for them to offer a geniunely pleasant experience to guests anymore.

It's obvious that the owners have gotten lazy. Upkeep is minimal and recent modern upgrades are very poorly planned. The rooms are tired, moldy and unmaintained. And for some absolutely tragic reason, the kitchen exhaust fan and external windows open directly onto the otherwise tranquil pool.

One specific experience really sealed the deal in this unfortunate stay. The bathroom flooded.
The already disappointing jacuzzi (doesn't actually work) constantly leaked throughout our stay. The whole night was spent mopping up the water which flooded even underneath the bed. And when I complained to the front desk, there was little they could do, since I had booked the last room. And because this particular room had been saved to give out last, I was to led to believe that there may have been some malicious mis-administration also going on. In the morning, I was given the most apathetic 'sorry' and a free bottle of water...seriously.

This hotel reminds me of a hangover. Which is exactly what I felt when I was reminded of the room tariff I paid upon checkout. Pousada de Coloane is enjoying a brief 'high' with its' recent award and holiday season, but unless they make some seriously needed improvements, the whole place is going to fall to the ground. The are fundamental flaws in its' value offering.

My suggestion to travellers looking at this place: check back in a year or so. If they are still standing by then, they'll have probably gotten their act together. In the meantime, enjoy the excellent restaurant on the waterfront and stay at a different hotel.

Reviewed 25 April 2013

After a few hectic days in HK we were looking forward to our 'pool-side' part of our holiday.

On arrival in 28 degree heat, we found the pool closed until April for maintenance (phone ahead before you book - hotel's website misleading).

We took a 2nd floor room, it was ok with balcony towards the sea; bathroom clean but with some silly monstrous 80's style jacuzzi taking up much of it. Double sink - but no space to put our toiletries so we used the second sink as a counter top. Shower dire as water splashed over the edge onto the floor - probably accounts to the smell of damp and mould that accounts for previous reviews. Wobbly wardrobe that made us laugh with 4 hangers......

More insulation is required between rooms - our room was next to a European family who got back to their room in the early hours (probably from the strip) and decided to make copious amounts of noise up and down the tiled corridors for an hour or so. Also we knew when they took loo time - the loo along with its pipework sounded like it was about to take off when flushed!

Restaurant staff excellent and probably the best thing about the hotel besides the balcony looking out to the sea, especially of an evening - food ok (better 300m away at La Gondala), basic breakfast.

This hotel could be a real gem, it has so much potential; I really wanted to write something positive, because of the hotel's wonderful location, the excellent restaurant staff, but the hotel accommodation just lets it down.

Would I be back, I'm not so sure.......

Room Tip: Get a second floor room - the noise must be worse on the first floor.

I enjoyed our two night stay here. It was a 'romantic get-away' We did not have to go anywhere near the casinos, and hustle and bustle of the rest of Macau. If you are mobile and can climb stairs there's a very frequent and effective bus service on the road above the hotel. You can easily get into town using the busses but we only went as far as Hac Sa (black Sand) beach and the lovely little village of Coloane.
A few problems with getting the jacuzzi working, but with the aid of the friendly staff member we did manage to get it going.
Breakfast was rather disappointing both days and the restaurant did not look very appealing as it was empty when we were there.
Highly recommend this hotel for its location if you want to get away from things and go to sleep with the sound of waves crashing on the seashore. Despite this tranquility, the hotel is well equipped with Free WiFi and we had no troubles getting into this. There's also a computer area.
