Owner description: Set in beautiful countryside in the south of the Isle of Man you’ll find a number of thatched Manx cottages at Cregneash which are open for you to explore and enjoy.Visit Harry Kelly’s cottage where there’ll be Bonnag cooking on the fire, speak to the village’s joiner and blacksmith, explore Church Farm or take time out to enjoy a service at St Peter’s Church. You’ll often see the fields being worked with horse-drawn equipment, craftsmen thatching the roofs, spinning, weaving and wood turning and have a chance to learn about the growing and preparation of Manx food.In the fields surrounding Cregneash you’ll spot plough horses, shorthorn cows and Manx Loaghtan sheep, whilst Manx cats (famous for having no tails!)can also be seen in the village.A picture postcard village, with beautiful walks available in the surrounding countryside including to the Sound, Meayll Circle (a megalithic chambered tomb) and to the rock formations at the Chasms.

We enjoyed the open cottages, the blacksmith and the Manx language section, but it was a bit disappointing that the farm buildings were shut up and nobody was working outside. We visited on a very wet day before the main season, so perhaps things would have have been busier on a better day. Had a very welcome warm bowl of Manx Broth, complete with Laughton sheep, followed by a traditional Manx cake. Free admittance for UK National Trust members.

What a wonderful village this is! With all the buildings virtually untouched since they were built, it is a fascinating trip back in time to see how our ancestors lived and worked. With various themed cottages containing, amongst others, a blacksmith, carpenter, farm (with fields ploughed traditionally, not with fancy machinery) and church. Guides dressed in the clothes of the day offer interesting stories without being too pushy. Finish off the tour with a snack in the cafe with lots of home baked goodies!

We came upon this preserved crofting community almost by chance en route back from Niarbyl. It is so very well done and had very knowledgeable and helpful staff "working" in some of the cottages, dressed in attire from the time period and performing tasks also from the period. A "must" if you're anywhere nearby.

We opted to visit Cregneash for a bite to eat and decided on the afternoon tea. The staff were very friendly and the setting made you feel at home. Afternoon tea arrived fabulous sandwiches, pot of tea and scone, fresh cream and jam, couldn't manage the cake which the staff wrapped up for us to take away. Well done Ladies hope to see you again soon :)
