I was visiting a friend in the area who mentioned that a new restaurant had just opened so we decided to investigate. I was glad we did as La Cucina is lovely.

It is classy without being too 'stuffy' and has a modern but comfortable feel about it. All too often nowadays restaurants find it hard to be both. The evening we visited was packed, but there was a lovely atmosphere in there and importantly the service was still excellent.

My friend and I had some pizza bread to start which was delicious. Then for our mains I had the spaghetti marinara, which was superb. All too often pasta and specifically spaghetti is over cooked, but this was cooked to perfection. My friend opted for the fusili posilipo and was equally impressed. Although we were quite full we thought it would be criminal not to have any desserts, so we opted for the tira mi su which was delicious and homemade too by all accounts!

Overall great service and great food, just a shame I don't live near by, however it does give me an excuse to visit my friend more often, as this could well become a new 'away from home' regular place to eat!

I asked Tripadvisor to add this so that I could write a review, I left it a few days hoping we were just unlucky & that there would be lots of 5's but..
It was great that another restaurant is in our village & that is was fully booked on the first week of opening. Also great that it was lively & full of mainly young people, having a great time.
Lots of things need addressing. Booking only really done online with an email to confirm eventuallyI think they are too busy to answer the phone, to me a bit of a no no. You can go in & book but not everyone is in Rustington at the time of wanting to book a table.
That may well have improved after the first week. Actually just looked on their website & shows as please ring 01903 378121 but the number is different transposed from the top of website ie 01903 783121 which I think is the correct one...this is on Mon June 10 at 11am. Sure this will be corrected soon...
Service would be next, nice guy eventually asked us what we would like to drink, this must have been after 15 mins with a further 15 mins before they arrived. We were a party of 4 so lots to chat about but would have been nice to have drinks to chat over. Water was forgotten until reminded.
We have recently returned from Capri & Naples so thought we may get some good Italian food choices.
Starters were ok, would have loved some prawns in garlic, but on offer was a prawn cocktail.
Tiny tiny shrimp prawns that may well have come from Iceland a few doors away rather than fresh.
Bruschetta was ok, mushrooms were lovely.
Now considering the owner has a small chain of 3, one being in Horley, the other in Richmond I think, I find it quite bizarre that he chose not to learn from his experiences with those 2. The lighting is appalling, not too bad during day & around 7.30 but by 10, just far too bright & not dimmable!! The menu at Horley seems more appropriate of an Italian. Apart from pizzas & pasta , there were 3 chicken dishes, 2 steaks & a sea bream choice. The menus are already printed & unlikely that any new dishes will therefore be added. We did not see a blackboard specials menu or asked if we would like to see it. Given this was their first week, they probably were surprised how full they were without adding to the menu.
My steak medallions were actually superb, lovely vegetables, small saute potatoes, carrots & green beans, all cooked beautifully. Hubby's chicken had the same tomato sauce on it as the sea bream, appeared to have been ladled & plonked on top. Not impressed.
They had run out of ice cream!
We were charged for a bottle of wine that we did not have.(We did have 3 bottles)
I personally would be happy to visit again & assuming they can address the serious lack of staff, sort out the lighting, even turn some off & have candles would be great! Revisit their menu to be more in tune with their Horley restaurant, esp the starters! & Gamberoni would be mwah!
I think this place has massive potential, we have a fabulous Indian & a Thai in our little village Street. A superb Italian will be the icing on the cake!

Dear Sunlover6969, Firstly thank you for taking the time to write your review and we are sorry to hear that your visit wasn't a good one. We take on board all suggestions and points, and as we are now as I write only into our third week of opening, we are learning and improving each day.Bookings can be done either by phone or online and as you can appreciate the phone line and email was completely inundated with booking requests, which as you mention were eventually answered. Hopefully this has now improved. We apologise for the slow service, again this was all due to finding our feet as it were, with training of young waitresses, and the kitchen staff coming together, this we hope is now much improved. In regards to the food we are sorry it didn't meet your requirements, all ingriedients are fresh and dishes are cooked on the premises. We will be bringing out a specials board, once all the kitchen staff have settled in, so thats why you were not offered a specials board. We pride ourselves on getting food right and there is no point in having many dishes available without adequate staff, ingredients and so forth and as you mentioned we really didnt expect to be quite so busy. Apologies again for being charged for an extra bottle of wine, but mistakes do happen and its easily done when presented with new staff and new till system. We are taking on staff and training them up and the lighting is being looked into, so we very much would like to welcome you back to La Cucina!! The team at La Cucina.
