The service ,food and general ambience here are excellent. The area has lots to do for walkers, golfers but not in the immediate vacinity of the hotel.
The shame is it is so noisy in the bedrooms-there are few carpets so you get lots of noises carrying round corridors and bedrooms-from heels to doors slamming. And why do the doors make that awful thump after you have closed them.Tjhe general insulation is not at five star level so you will hear noises from adjacent rooms.Let's hope they are the sort of noises that humour you rather than completley disturb your night's sleep.

We stayed in the Head Gardener's Lodge for the weekend. We were disappointed with the standard of accommodation which appears not to have been updated for some time. The hotel was very nice, but don't be fooled into thinking that the lodge is in anywhere the same league. It is tucked around the back of the site with no signage or lighting, so walking back at night is difficult. It us also where the hotel keeps all of it maintenance equipment - the lodge was surrounded by building equipment and diggers which thoroughly spoilt the lovely countryside views. It seems that the lodge is a forgotten part if the hotel, our bedside lamps did not work so we asked for these to be looked at (they were not) and the tea, coffee and milk was not topped up (even though we asked for these to be done). We mentioned these points on checking out, only to be what I can only describe as being 'fobbed off' by the receptionist. Overall very poor value for money, but I think the experience in the main hotel would be better.

Spent two nights here to celebrate our wedding anniversary on a Dinner Bed & Breakfast basis. Check in was fine but had to take our own luggage to our room which was not a perfect start. The room itself was really nice, personally we did not like the wooden floors in the room or the corridors as they are very noisy and you can here people walking around the place and we were both woken up a couple of times by this. We had to ask for extra shampoo/shower gel as only one small bottle of each is provided for two people ?? The food in the restaurant was really nice and presented beautifully, but why oh why should a portion of vegetables with a main meal be a £2.95 extra - at the rates this hotel charges, it is nothing short of an outrage, as is the 'extra charge' for a post meal coffee. The spa was really nice with a plentiful supply of towels. It would not take much for this Hotel to become truly exceptional. The rates are high but sadly the total experience does not match the final bill. Would we return ?, probably not, as there are a number of 'Country Hotels' in the British countryside which do things to a better standard at comparitive rates.

This hotel has obviously had a lot of money spent on it, and it shows in the quality of the fixtures and fittings. It is located right out in the country, a few miles off the A1, with nothing around it at all. This is great if you are looking for a quiet break (which we were), but not so good if you are looking for nightlife. The location is also excellently placed for visiting some of Northumbria's main attractions like Holy Island, Bamburgh, Alnwick etc.

We really liked this hotel: our "executive" room was large and pleasant, and equipped with all the essentials; the food at both breakfast and dinner was excellent; the staff were friendly and helpful. We were particularly impressed when, on the 3rd night of our stay, we were asked if we would like the standard menu varying for the remaining nights.

However, there were a few niggles which have stopped us rating it as excellent: the most serious was the fact that our room was obviously only cleaned in a perfunctory fashion - we found rolls of dust in the corners and under the bed. Housekeeping said it was not to their normal standard (thank goodness!).
The flat screen TV was great, but positioned so that it could not be fully seen from the bed, being partly obscured by the large wardrobe.
On check-in, we were surprised that we were not offered any assistance to take our luggage to the room.
The corridors in the hotel have wooden floors, which look lovely, but it makes them noisy - you can hear everyone's footsteps as they walk past your room, and voices seem to echo. There is no chance of an afternoon nap!

A real gem of a hotel. This was probably the best hotel my partner and I have stayed in. The service was without fault and the friendliness of the staff exceptional. They all really seemed proud of the hotel they worked in. It was very comfortable neither of us wanted to leave. The hotel rooms have been very tastefully renovated and furnished with a modern style that utilises old features. Very tasteful. Many of the features are constructed by local craftsman including a most magnificent oak staircase. The spa and pool was lovely. My partner particularly enjoyed her treatments. The food in the restaurant was very nice and we felt the wine was good value for a restaurant of this quality.

Stayed here for one night on a trip round the UK and got quite a good deal on laterooms which brought it within our price range. The hotel was really lovely and it is set in very pretty grounds. I am afraid we didn't try the food as we thought is was rather over priced and I didn't even get to the spa which sounded lovely. I would definitely go back though and try it all out. We did go for a walk round the grounds though and they were very beautiful except the maze which could do with a trim and weed! Would highly recommend a visit though.

The people running this hotel have only one standard - aim for perfection! The building has been carefully restored using local craftsmen and has an atrium with a splendid wooden staircase as its centre piece. Our room was spacious as was the bathroom which had a walk-in shower and roll top bath. The room's furnishings and curtains were made from the very best materials - just beauiful with a view over the lovely gardens.
We eat regularly at two star Michelin restaurants in London and the dinner was easily up to that standard. The chef is innovative and knows how to highlight flavours - real star! All of the staff are friendly and helpful - whoever is running this hotel has the highest standards and is doing a great job. Can't wait to return.
