“Great safari base”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 June 2014

Welcoming guesthouse with great staff. Brian the manager and Maldiga the cook made every effort to look after us. My wife and I stayed in one of the separate cottages, we chose ac because we are traveling with our 20 month old daughter and it helps her to sleep. No baby cots like many places in Sri Lanka but Brian gave us loads of cushions and An extra bed and she slept very well. All rooms were clean and comfortable and the grounds of the guesthouse are very rural, if a little dry at this time of year. An hour after we arrived Brian and a friend showed us a bull elephant that was exploring the next door garden, a real experience for all of us. We stayed 2 nights and went on an elephant ride around harabana lake - this was mainly for our daughter's benefit and she then of course almost ignored the experience! It was not something I would recommend, overpriced and doesn't really feel like something particularly special. However the safari to minneriya national park was amazing and worth every penny. As with everything, Brian arranged it for us and was a trustworthy and caring organizer and really nice to talk to! The food was excellent and we Ate a different traditional dish at each meal, the egg hoppers were something I will never forget, great breakfasts and Brian bought curd and yoghurt and helped feed our daughter. Location is great for the surrounding attractions but you'd have to take a tuck tuck to get to town really(if you have a baby to carry!)

Room Tip: All rooms are nice and depends on your taste and budget.

We stayed in the main building rather than a lodge and found the room to be comfortable and the bathroom clean. It was shared with a fair few bugs but that seems hard to avoid given the location. The best thing about our stay was the helpfulness and great company of Janital the manager who constantly went above and beyond to help us.

July 2013. We were received by a impolite manager, who was the only person around.
There were no other guests. The room looked allright and was clean, but road and traffic are right in front of this familyroom, just 10 meters away...

Planned to stay here for 5 nights with our family (two kids) to use it as a base for exploring this beautiful region in Sri Lanka. But we already left after one night, because of the failing a/c and consequent breaking down of the electricity. The Srilankan breakfast was pretty awful. These things can happen of course, but stupid enough we paid for 5 nights in advance...
Of course we wanted some of our money back and we asked for a refund for only 3 out of the 5 nights.
At first the management seemed to agree, then offered us rooms for 3 nights in their Kandy branch 'Hotel Tropicana' (which was okay for us), but within one hour after we left for Dambulla we received a phone call that 'Tropicana' was fully booked and a refund was not possible.

Very unkind, very, very disrespectful. If you want our advice: don't go there!

The worst stay ever if it comes to the service. The managerwho was trying to entertain us in all possible ways and suck the moeny out of us. Was annoying and I felt sorry for him. I felt like trapped and hated the whole idea of 'I will take care of you'. We got cut out of the power 2 times in 4 days stay and once there was no watter. The tree house is a cool and adventurous place to stay in. As all the bugs , insects , frogs lizards and so on live toghether with you in the same room. Which I count as a great and best out of it:) Too high price, much too high for what we got.. or I should say what we didnt get .. which is mental comfort disturbed by fat embarrassing manager...felt much better when we left

Room Tip: it you r a back packer looking for a nice stay or a independent tourist you would feel stuck of the...

2 of us stayed for 5 nights in a lovely triple room, plenty of space, clean and tidy with air con!! There were also two jungle rooms or treetop rooms available. The staff were extremely warm and welcoming. A very nice place to relax in the peaceful wildlife surroundings or use as a base to travel and explore the cultural triangle. The food was plentiful and delicious, thank you for a lovely stay.

Stayed one night with three friends, after visiting Sigiriya and the Dambulla cave temple. The owner (had us call him Lucky but I think his name is Lakshman?) is incredibly friendly and welcomed us with tasty juice beverages upon our arrival and was excited to announce that he and his one-woman staff were preparing an "American barbecue" for our dinner. He also served us a lovely breakfast in the morning and helped arrange elephant rides for us the next day.

The accommodations were bare-bones but comfortable. The four of us stayed in two rooms which were situated a dozen meters or so away from the main lodge. Each contained one queen-sized bed with mosquito net, hot water shower, toilet, sink, and air conditioner. One of the rooms had an additional cot but no extra mosquito net, so bring your own or prepare to get cozy on the larger bed :) Additional roommates in the two rooms included a small frog (cute!), a lizard, a large spider, and many mosquitoes, who probably gained entrance because we were going in and out of the rooms around dusk.

One note - make sure you have very accurate directions to this place! Our driver got lost and when we stopped to ask locals, only one out of six had even heard of Eagle's Wing Lodge, let alone was able to give directions.

Anyways, we would highly recommend staying at the Eagle's Wing lodge! The kindness of our host made all the difference, and the rooms had everything we really needed - hot water, A/C, and mosquito net!
