There's a certain magic to be greeted and garlanded after a long drive by three ladies in traditional dress, standing silhouetted in the arched gate leading to the interior courtyard of Castle Bera. Check-in formalities very minimalist - we chose one of two clean, spacious, well-appointed and delightfully (and eccentrically) decorated rooms offered to us.
After a cup of tea set off on a look-for-the-leopard drive; we saw nothing during daylight, but after nightfall, our accompanying rangers (who clearly knew their jobs) soon picked out several leopards on rocky outcrops some 200 metres away. Worth mentioning that the vehicles were well-equipped with binoculars and blankets (gets cold at night ...) We were not disappointed - a great (and unexpected) experience.
TBS, our genial host and owner, joined us for pre-dinner drinks, and entertained us with stories and anecdotes. A small group of other guests - all of whom long-standing friends - made for a friendly and very companionable evening. Dinner was excellent.
Castle Bera is a delightful heritage property - a bit quirky - a few little ups and downs, staircases, hideaways - all a few metres from the village itself. Staff were great !More
