“What a nightmare - stay away at all costs!”
Reviewed 11 April 2011

This is the only accommodation in the town centre, so they have no competition. We booked 2 nights in advance and had to pay in full at the time of booking. It soon became clear why they have this policy. The hotel doesn't have a car park, but the receptionist directed us to a supermarket car park where we would have had to move the car every few hours, rather than to a long stay one which she didn't know about. Room 6 was tired and shabby (avocado bathroom suite!) like the rest of the place, and nothing was particularly clean. Shortly after we started our evening meal, the restaurant ceiling started to shake and there was a loud sound from above which I thought was an industrial washing machine running amok. When we asked what it was, we were told it was the local aerobics class, and not to fuss about it. When we said we would rather not eat our meal with all the noise, the assistant manageress was called and insulted us. We asked for our money back as we felt unwelcome and uncomfortable. She refused, but we stood our ground and eventually got it back. We can't rate the food, since we only got as far as our starters, nor the sleep quality of the beds as we left, not before she insisted on checking the room in case we had trashed it. Her final shot was another insult. We go away on quite a regular basis and without a doubt this was the worst place we have ever been. The only positive thing was the friendly barman, who was excellent, but the other staff would benefit from an intensive man-management course.

On arrival, we were given the key to room 9 where the lavatory is connected to a Saniflow-type macerator which was LEAKING, held together by plastic ties and effluent was seeping into the floor covering. The smell was appalling. Withinin minutes we complained to Reception where no surprise was shown and we were handed the key to room 7, described as a "luxury" four-poster. The bed was from the Jewson era(!) the edges of which catch the backs of legs, the cover was STAINED and the pillow protectors scrunchy. The bathroom, though adequate, like the bedroom lacked any atmosphere. Of all the furniture, only the bedside cabinets matched. There were TOENAIL clippings/a Visa receipt on the dressing table presumably from the previous occupant. We stayed two nights, having booked and paid in advance (not a mistake we shall repeat) over the internet. At our first breakfast (where the table indicated was too small and cramped to accommodate all the crockery, etc) I spoke quietly with the manageress about the loo in room 9 and the clippings/receipt in room 7 and she said she had passed my comments on. On the second morning no table had been prepared. Nothing at all was done and the clippings/receipt were still there when we checked out. Having researched the net, The George is the only B&B available in Crewkerne itself. The breakfasts were OK but this establishment is most unwelcoming so for our next visit to our friends in the town we already have alternative accommodation lined up.

On the plus side, the breakfast is excellent.
Well that's the positives out of the way!
The whole accommodation area was shabby, with a chest freezer greeting you in he entrance lobby.
Garish nylon carpets and woodchip wallpaper abound, it reminded me of staying over with elderly relatives in the 1970's, plus it smelled somewhat like a care home (to the extent that we bought incense sticks to overcome the aroma!).
Our double room was so small that there was nowhere to put a suitcase, whilst the ensuite had to have a sliding door, which led into a shower/WC room the width of the shower cubicle (it must have been a wardrobe in a former life). The shower was feeble to say the least, whilst when the WC was flushed there was an overpowering smell of drains.
I don't know what people get up to in Somerset, but the sign above the toilet requesting that nappies/tampons/condoms etc. must not be flushed down the pan included of all things nuts and bolts!!!!!!
Our daughter was in a single room that was no better in size or quality than ours.
To add insult to injury, proudly displayed outside were signs showing that the hotel is rated 3* by the AA and that it offers "luxurious en-suite accommodation".
It would have been a joke, but for the fact that we had paid £330 up front for three nights!

I agree with the previous contributor...it is somewhere to sleep....but...the problem with this hotel is that the heating goes off at night. This may not be a problem in August but it is December 23rd. We stayed in room 6 and it wasn't hot with the heating on full. When it went off at night...we froze..I was surprised there wasn't ice on the inside of the window..!! Plus point was an excellent fresh breakfast in a very warm restaurant. Actually, I think I would rather have slept in a chair in the restaurant!

In short...ok as a bed in summer...but never again in winter.

This is the latest of several stays at the George several times when visiting friends in Crewkerne. Crewkerne itself is a great little market town with some interesting shops and a good base for seeing the surrounding area. The prices here are usually much less than on the coast.
The George is right in the centre of town.
On the plus side it's clean, the beds are comfortable, and the breakfast is well cooked. The evening menu is reputed to be good as well.
On the minus side; the service is patchy and in the rooms I've seen it's dated, woodchip wallpaper, nylon carpets, thin walls, noisy plumbing and s-l-o-w showers.
I basically sleep and eat breakfast there and it's fine for a couple of days.
