“Rustic but lacks some facilities”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 September 2013

Spent a quick 2 days as a retreat last month. Positives are - nice place to unwind, cabanas are rustic but comfortable enough, food was good, staff were helpful. Not so great bits - streets are unpaved and cabanas are at different levels - so when it rains, which it did quite hard, progress is slow and muddy. At least umbrellas could be provided. It was cheap, just the right distance from Guadalajara, and the drive to the place was refreshing. Along the drive the view of Lake Chappala is indeed an ideal photo op - either while going up the hill or on the way back down. Would love to go back again!!!

Note - no WiFi except in the conference room and reception. No signal in the rooms. Phone connectivity was fine however.

We are from Guadalajara and Mazamitla is just a couple of hours away from here, so this was the ideal weekend-escapade. The Monteverde cabins are great, being surrounded by the forest and having everything you need for a comfortable stay. I found the lightning was very dim at night, so most of the illumination came from the chimney and you don’t have a spot to read, for instance (I know not everybody is looking for a good reading on a weekend escapade, but believe me, there are a lot of people who does). The beds were not a 100% comfortable, and we had to ask for additional blankets for the night. Also, we had an issue with our car and the front desk people were not helpful at all; we finally solved it on our own, but a little proactivity would have been highly appreciated. Overall, I did like Monteverde and I’d recommend it to my friends.

Our extended family spent two nights in two large cabañas in July. The resort advertises itself as having four stars, and while the grounds are extensive and lovely, the cabañas themselves are closer to what you would expect from a two star hotel.
The great room is large enough for a group of 10 to 12 to gather, and having a wood burning fireplace was wonderful on cool summer nights. The mattresses are firm and very comfortable and the blankets provided are enough to keep one warm. The pillows were flat, but we were given additional ones when we asked. The bathroom is basic with thin towels and hot water that was only lukewarm on the first day.
After we checked in, we requested a kitchen set of pots, pans, serving spoons and had to count and sign several papers saying that we had received it. This was not what I would have expected from a four star resort. In addition, there was a light that didn't function and although we asked several times that it be repaired, it never was. We were given a light bulb, which we tried, but the problem was with a circuit. This wouldn't have mattered so much, except that the living room is quite dark. It also took more than one request to get the kitchen set and extra pillows - we ended up going to the office and picking them up ourselves. Since there are no phones, each request means a trek to the office to ask for things in person. The service in general was lackadaisical - no hurry to open the gate at the entrance when cars arrive, no apologies for things that weren't delivered, no explanation for a power outage of several hours on day two and no offers of help with luggage or other services.
There is a nice court for football and basketball and the complex is a short way to the town (up and down a few hills).
All in all, not a bad place if you don't go with high expectations for service and cabañas that are more than rustic.

This hotel is really an extensive resort with lots of cabañas on a large property that´s beautifully landscaped with mature vegetation. Our group of 8 stayed in one of the large cabins, which was just perfect. There was a special discount, which mean that we paid about $160 per night for the room. There were four bunk beds, two twin beds, and a double bed. The kitchen comes with an adequate set of plates, dishes and utinsels, but no supplies like towels or soap. The one drawback was that the free internet was only available in the lobby, a five-minute walk away from our cabin and it was slow, but that wasn´t really a big deal for us.

The view from the great room was fantastic, of the luxurient vegegation and the mountains in the distance. We had a fire in the fireplace that made the place even cozier. Right below our room was a little stand where you could buy beer and meals at not a bargain but at a reasonable price. We walked into the town for meals, just a short walk, and hiked up the Sierra del Tigre and to the waterfall. All in all, a terrific weekend getaway from Guadalajara!

A very nice place to relax for the weekend. Stayed in the cabanas which were rustic but nice. It was rainy and cold during my stay but the fireplace was a great way to keep warm.

We were traveling through the Guadajara area of Mexico and wanted to see the mountains at an altitude of 7200’. We stayed at the Monteverde by chance as we examined a number of other places and this mountain resort with its individual cottages, in the mountains was well staffed, equipped, maintained, clean and a unique Mexican setting not visited by non Mexicans. It is best suited to family units as the cottages are finished with kitchen equipment. There is not a pool but lots of other outdoor facilities. An above average place to stay in Mexico.
