Me and my brother stayed here after a trip to Kili. Hotel has a very nice layout with little lodges dotted around. A very nice pool and is actually on the beach front. The beach is very nice, there is some seaweed but this is actually the better part as we had a walk up and down for quite a way.
When this hotel was opened up in 1994 it would have been amazing. However by now, the places is becoming run down and needs good investment to bring it back up to grade. The tired furniture is quite rustic but a lot of the sun lounge mattresses are torn, the walls have plaster falling off and there is a lot of general wear and tear. The pool is still excellent and well maintained.
The rooms are well sized but quite dark. The beds are okay but the bedding is not very good at all. The rooms have no TV, no fridge, no AC but do have fans and mosquito nets. The bathroom was generally ok in appearance/cleanliness but the shower was just a trickle and the taps were very rusty. The hotel uses salty water which no doubt contributes to the rapid corrosion of the metalwork. I did point this out to the hotel manager who said they change the taps every year but they just rust through very quickly. This maybe true as by the time I got home 3 days later, my razor blade was very rusty!
The restaurant at the hotel is good. Breakfast is included and it's usually fresh juice, toast, fruit and eggs in a variety of choices (scrambled, boiled, spanish, etc). The rest of the meals were actually very very good. All very good portions, well cooked, well presented and tasted amazing. I tried seafood mostly so the lobster, tuna, kingfisher and seafood platter were very good quality. The waiting was good also. The staff are friendly but have the tendancy to try to make their own offers to you to make some money on the side.
The hotel has wifi free too which was a godsend as some of the more expensive hotels charge for this. It was a good speed too but didn't extend to my room (it's mostly around the restaurant area).

The mood and atmosphere is very relaxed at this place and it surely is a nice and quiet place. The hammocks on the beach are great to just wind down on.

I would love for the owner to spend some money and renovate the place, put new bedding/curtains etc in and give the place a good once over, it would then be a wonderful rustic hotel like it once would have been.

Room Tip: Maybe you need to book the deluxe rooms and a seafront lodge to make the experience better.

We loved our stay here. We were here for 4 nights and loved this small hotel. The staff was so helpful, especially the bar and restaurant staff. It was lovely eating lunch by the pool and dinner listening to the waves on the beach. The beach itself isn't the best with a lot of sea weed and sea urchins but it has gorgeous white sand that makes up for it. The pool is good, shallow and deep end and an enclosed shallow area for kids and it was so quiet and relaxing. We liked not being in a big resort-style hotel and actually getting to know the staff and other travelers and it was great value for the price!!

With my wife we have spent 3 nights in 2009 December.
First of all, this is not hotel, like B/B. It is sure that, sea, beach, atmosphere is excellent,
but the place is horrible. We had to stay there, because we have got prepaid accommodation, we had no chance to change it.
Before going there, personally I had a dream about Zanzibar but after arrival it became a nightmare.
There was no electricity, no running AC. My advice is that, before going there, think ten times.

Management response:Responded 17 July 2011

Normally I accept a bad review but this one is a bit strange.
The period of their stay was when Zanzibar had no electric power for 3 months, starting December 12 2009, but we had generator which was running 22 hours per day, any complaint about the remaining 3 hours is not fair.
Many hotels in Zanzibar had no power at all for 3 months with many guests staying.
I wonder what promted them to write the review almost 2 years later?

Recommended by friends, we booked 5 nights here - thank god we didn't pay in advance!

The room was absolutely filthy with cob webs in the windows and all sorts of bugs in the bathroom. An unpleasant smell bothered us all night. The bathroom was close to unacceptable.

The beach was ok, but since we went in the low season it was very awkward to strip to a bikini while the locals stared. We were the only tourists there and, in this case, that made us very uncomfortable.

The pool looked great, but we didn't stay to enjoy it. The food was ok with excellent juice and fruit options - but I later learnd the fruit is good anywhere in Zanzibar.

The staff was very friendly and disappointing them in leaving early was the only bad thing about our stay here.

Besides everything, I was charged a high rate for a low seasonstay - paying less to stay in Nungwe at a much better hotel.

Stayed for one week during low season we were the only ones there for part of it. It was great. The beach is amazingly beautiful and no one hassles you. The pool was nice and we enjoyed laying in hammocks watching the Indian Ocean. Food was good as well, it was a very relaxing week and we definitely hope to come back.
