“We'd come back anytime”
Reviewed 27 August 2014 via mobile

Antico Borgo Petralia has everything: from a pool, to excellent wifi, to clean and beautiful rooms and a way of making you feel safe and welcome. It's fantastically rebuilt from ruins with a pretty good eye for detail. Breakfast is included and good; dinner is optional and good but not in any way special. The views on the Etna and the sea are amazing. Sarah, the hostess, is a ray of sunlight on your day. She is very kind, helpfull and witty. Really, this a place we'd come back to anytime!

We stayed for four nights at this wonderful hotel and can only recommed it wholeheartedly. The owners have transformed a small hamlet into a beautiful hotel village. They have obviously poured their heart and soul into this enterprise and the attention to detail is amazing. The buildings are set in a landscaped garden with several terraces and a beautiful pool. At night you can sit on these terraces and hsve a grandstand view of Mount Etna spewing lava, while during the day these same terraces afford a panoramic view of the coast between Taormina and Catania.
Practicalities: Your car is securely parked behind a locked gate. Your room in the village is of a good size, well-equipped and spotlessly clean. You have excellent wifi everywhere (the best we found in Sicily) and good satellite TV. The bathroom is functional and stylish.
Food: The buffet breakfast caters amply for northern (savoury) and southern (sweet) tastes. Every morning there are several freshly baked cakes. For dinner you always have a choice of extremely tasty dishes, mostly with a local background and always with fresh local ingredients. There will always be one or two free tidbits thrown in.
Service: On a very friendly island 4he Antico Borgo's staff still manage to get the friendliness award. This warm welcome has to be experienced to be believed. They are genuinely concerned to ensure you have the best time ever. And we dud.
All the other guests we spoke to were full of praise for this hotel. One couple had only wanted to stay two nights but ended up spending their whole holiday here. Out of the eight hotels westayed in in Sily this was the best. Just a wonderful experience. We will always remember sitting on the terrace, glass of wine in hand, with bats fluttering in the garden and Etna glowing high above us.

If you want to stay in the mountains, and visit Etna etc, then please stay here. Easy to find, fabulous grounds and rooms, and the family owners could not do more to make you feel welcome. The breakfast is varied and excellent,- home made cakes and pastries sublime. The evening meal was really good, and excellent value for money. Views of the coast to one side and smoking Etna to the other. The pool is clean and well kept, and all in all a fantastic relaxing place. I would definitely return if in Sicily again.

Room Tip: We had the triple room, which was actually a suite with private balcony. Absolutely fabulous.

Antico Borgo Petralia lies beautifully high on 650 m, between the Ionian Sea and the living craters of Etna. Both present for your eyes when having breakfast, dinner or take a swim in the pool. The great Sicilian nature surrounds you at this family own hotel, just outside the town of Zafferana, a region famous for its honey.

You will find a hotel with a touch of country style, where everything is in perfect order, without striving for luxury.

As soon as you arrive you are met and welcomed by one of the family members and this is one of the great advantages with a stay here. You are met with openness, respect and at the same time taking care of in a very warm and generous way.

You can come here and spend your days relaxing by the pool or as a base for trips up to the top of Etna, down to the beaches of the Mediterranean See or go wherever you like to meet the Etna Land.

The rooms are very convenient with the air conditioning working perfectly. Breakfast includes in a rich way everything you expect in a place like Sicily. In the evening dinner is served, very tasteful with again a certain rustic feeling.

There is of course no place that suits everyone in taste and preference, but Antico Borgo Petralia covers nearly everything except being a swinging lively and eruptive arena. The last thing though not really true as Etna constantly makes herself present.

As a frequent traveller in Sicily I can warmly recommend Antico Borgo Petralia. It is one of the best hotels on the Island, when you prefer to share its richness, beauty and dynamic power.

This hotel was one of our absolute favorites in Sicily. What is so amazing about it is the attention and detail this family has put into creating a wonderful place for people who are visiting Sicily to stay. Ask to see the video that they put together that shows what the property looked like ten years ago when the purchased the place. It was just a shell of a farm - literally, a shell. There wasn't anything other than weeds growing on the property. The have made it an oasis of quiet and beauty on the hills below Mount Etnea. The beds are comfortable and the rooms very quiet. There is a nice swimming pool and gardens to wander through. The family is very gracious. Sara (the daughter) brought us juice and homemade cakes upon our arrival. We were exhausted upon arriving in Sicily and decided to have dinner at the hotel. The food was simple and delicious. My only compliant - I'd love to see more lighting in the rooms. This is minor though. I would definitely stay there again and can highly recommend the hotel to fellow travelers. Mount Etnea should not be missed. The jeep tour to the top is fantastic! Allot an extra hour of travel time for getting up and down the mountain to see the volcano.

There are not enough words to describe our wonderful 5 night stay at Antico Borgo Petralia. From Sara's warm welcome to the hugs with everyone upon our departure we were treated like royalty. The grounds are immaculate. The buildings that have been refurbished from old ruins with impeccable taste and design. The rooms are comfortable and spacious by European B&B standards. Breakfast buffets are sumptuous and delicious. On one side of the property you look up at Mt. Etna. On the other you look down on Catania Bay. Either way the view is beautiful. If you are up for a walk to Zafferana Etnea it is about 2 km. On Sunday there is an outdoor market. All this said, it is hard to top the warmth of the Petralia family. Beautiful daughter Sara manages the inn and her English is almost fluent. Her hard work is only outsized by her smile. Signore Petralia watches over everything with a smile and makes sure his guests are treated well. Signora Petralia supervises the kitchen. She cooks simple, regional dishes that are delicious. Beautiful daughter Caterina serves in the dining room. Antico Borgo Petralia is elegant and is a true value. There are even more good things to say about it.

This property has lovely self contained units with terraces , with a central dining area and pool facilities. The setting is beautiful with a view stretching from the snow capped peak of Mt Etna down to the sea. It is peaceful and rural. The owner's family are all involved and we found Sarah to be most charming and courteous . She has fluent English and is very helpful. The accomodation is very comfortble modern (but rustic in style) and has all one requires incl a micro wave, fridge, kettle etc and a good bathroom. It is possible to dine simply but adequately at night and we found this relaxing after a days sightseeing. Restaurants in the area are limited and the village of Zefferana itself is nothing special. However this is an excellent location for skiiers in winter or those who love mountains and trips by cable car ( being close to the Southern slopes) and for visiting Taormina and surrounds in Spring and Summer. The rates are very reasonable by comparison to Taormina and there are no crowds to deal with or parking issues as this place is a little off the beaten track.
