“Our 2 week adventure at Sicily”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 August 2010

An Amazing Time

August 1st to August 15th we stayed at the Hotel Airone, near Zaffarena Etna , Sicily. We were with a choir group of over 60 people. This was our first trip to Sicily, so we were quite anxious as to what to expect. What a pleasant surprise. All of the towns of this part of Sicily are built on the side of the mountain. The town of Zaffarena Etna is below the Hotel Airone. This town was our home for two weeks. We loved it.Being that this is their summer holiday, there were families walking around. People hanging out in the main square, drinking coffee , playing cards. We went to a café for café americano and gelato as much as possible. Pizza restaurant with Sicilian pizza to die for. And in the middle of this lovely town is the church with wildly ringing bells at noon time every day. At one pm the stores all shut down for a siesta until somewhere around 5pm. Then they reopen and stay out till the wee hours of the morning. We were coming back from a performance one night through the town at 2 in the morning and it was full of people bustling about. It was quite amazing to see. One night we went to see the procession of the Maria Della Provvidenza, the patron saint of the town . That was amazing. The fireworks were great. There are numerous fruit and vegetable stores in the town plus a large supermarket. So we would head into the village, grab a quick gelato and coffee, head over to the supermarket, the caroussel express, pick up a few supplies, such as fresh cheese (amazing!) mortadella , unbelievable olives, juice, bread and beer. And a big bag of peaches and nectarines. . Then we would start to truck up to the hotel. A few times I was not up to climbing the big hill and someone from the village would offer to drive us up to the hotel. Once back at the hotel , we would drop off our things , change into our bathing suits and head to the wellness centre in the hotel for a delightful Turkish bath. .From there we would head to the pool for swim. The pool was large, slightly coolish and clean. It was wonderful. I would go for swim and then stand on the deck looking over the town of Taromina and the chestnut trees. One night we checked out some of our fellow choir members rooms. It was interesting to see the difference. We liked our room (218) It comfortable and clean. Air conditioning was not necessary, we left our patio door open, so that the cool mountain breeze would blow through the room. It was delightful. We had no problems with the front desk staff. They went out of their way to provide a quality service to all of us. I am sure that we were quite demanding being such a large group. Twice we used the maid service to clean some clothes for us. A plastic bag full of clothes came back clean and carefully folded for about 2 euros a piece . They spoiled us, and made us feel special. We were very grateful I would like to think that we now have new friends in Zafferana Etna , and that we would need to go back some day soon. Bravo to Pepo (spelling?) and his co workers. On the main floor of the hotel there is a free internet workstation, plus there is a free wifi. I was happy to bring my skype phone and use it to call home sometimes. Early in the morning I would take pleasure in drinking coffee from the coffee bar and play on my laptop. A continental breakfast was served every day in the dining room, with fresh pastries and cheese , yogurt , with hard boiled eggs. I became a fan of the warm croissants, with powered sugar. It was a good meal, and the only suggestion I would make would be to have fresh fruit available. The main meal of the day was always a four course meal with dessert. Or you could choose to eat a la carte. Either way it was good. Once in a while the chef would come out to see if we were happy with our food. We toured the region as much as humanly possible in the short time we were there. For example Mount Etna, Mardi gras night in acireale, boat tour of the Eolie islands, with a swim at Vulcan beach. We went swimming at Riposto and Maxis beaches. We went to Taormina for a day and visited the greek amphitheatre. I found out after the fact , that it was the hotel that helped us organize these tours. On our last night at the hotel we were up at 2am to finish packing to go home. The hotel had prepared a mini continental breakfast for us and offered us a cappuccino for the road. Did we love it there? Absolutely. This is a high quality hotel and I would recommend it to anyone. A suggestion would be a better shuttle service between the town of Zafferana and the hotel. Maybe the town of Zafferana could get involved. Some sort of regularly scheduled shuttle service would be a good thing.. So Mille Grazies! And arrivederci!

Im sure I have missed something. Please message me if you have any questions and I will do my best to answer them

John

high up in the outskirts of zafferana, a lovely town, with plenty of restaurants, quiet square, shops banks etc.

hotel is a" wellness" spa with excellent facilities, but you may not want them. a bit pricey but little to fault it. obviously a favourite wedding venue, but very quiet on our visit. small balcony with a wonderful smell of honey all around the hill

We visited northeastern Sicily in November and needed to find accommodation at very short notice, following a bad experience with the one we had booked previously. Most hotels in the area close in the low season, but the Hotel Airone was still open. We were offered a choice of rooms and opted for a suite with a massive terrace balcony and beautiful views across the sea to Calabria. The room was in an excellent state of repair, clean and well serviced during our stay. The Airone is a charming family-run hotel full of character, with a lovely garden and an outdoor swimming pool (albeit closed during our stay). We encountered English and German speaking staff who were always friendly and helpful. As there were very few guests staying there in November, we found ourselves dining on our own in the fine restaurant, choosing from a small selection of good dishes. The buffet breakfast offered the classic Italian choices. The hidden gem of this hotel is its full range of free spa facilities, including a jet pool, sauna, steam room and jaccuzzi - modern, clean and beautifully decorated. When we relaxed in the spa, we had the luxury of again having it all to ourselves. The hotel is in a quiet location, away from the centre of Zafferana Etnea, and is the perfect starting point to explore both the southern and northern sides of the Mount Etna Nature Reserve.

Terrific view, but that is the only good thing I can say. Rooms are very small. Air conditioning did not work. The staff is surly and does not offer any help. The food is terrible ! The menu is fixed and precooked food is thrown down on your plate at 25 euro a person. There is no kitchen in the hotel. How anybody can serve bad food in Italy is incredible, and the owner should be sent to jail just for this. The wine list consists of three bottles of indifferent wine at 20 euro a bottle ! You are lucky if you can find anyone to serve you at the tiny bar. We were there for two days. Each night was a wedding at the hotel with loud noise and music until late at night. Do not stay here.

We stayed in this beautiful hotel for 3 nights. On our arrival at 3pm a wedding was in progress ands we we found it very difficult to park in the car park. When we checked in we were told that the pool area was being used by weding guests and that we were not able to go into the pool until 6pm. The wedding guests were there until 7.45 pm by which time it was time for dinner and we no longer wished to enter the pool. The following day we wanted to visit Mount Etna and had a lovely day there. On our return another wedding party was in progress and went on loudly until well after midnight right outside our bedroom. The following day we had earmarked as a day relaxing by the pool. We discovered that 3 weddings were due to take place that day from 1pm onwards and once again we would have to vacate the pool area to accomadate the guests. By this time we were really upset as the hotel had been chosen for its facilities as well as its proximity to Mount Etna and we were repeatedly being denied the use of them. We spoke to the manager who had many excuses and said his hands were tied and that a different person booked the weddings from the hotel guest bookings. No matter how much we emphasized the reason for the hotel choice ie. the lovely facilities combined to the proximity to Etna he did jot understand our greivance. That night fireworks whizzed past our bedroom window at 1am We were given a complementary meal and a bottle of wine as compensation. What they could not comprehend was that had we wanted to stay in Zafferana Etnea in a hotel without a pool we could have done so at much less cost. We were left feeling as if we were valueless as customers and sadly, in spite of the lovely position, view and facilities we cannot recommend this otherwise beautiful hotel. Beware......... the receptionist warned us that May and June is popular for weddings, but hotel guests are not advised of this.

Dear Guest,
I am very sorry you felt yourself as a "Hinderance" for the management, it is not so. We always try to solve all the problems our guest can have.. but maybe you forgot to write that you asked (the better word would be pretended !) a discount of more than 60 %, when our manager answered you it would not possible you have threatened to write on tripadvisor a very bad review (and magically it happens)..
However I just want to mark some points..
We gave you a sea-view room and not a standard room (where you would not heard noisy) and we offered you to change your room to solve the problem of noisy.
We offered you free of charge the use of our wellness centre.
We apologized you cannot use the swimming pool for a day.. but please say that it was just 1 day and it was a not normal situation with 2 weddings party..

Last thing: we will write on all web-site in wich we are that in May and June there will be the possibility to guest some wedding party.

We often try to lear from our mistakes, but ALWAYS

The hotel is out of the town and you need transport to be able to get to/from it as the local bus only goes one way each day. We found the reception staff very helpful and eager to try out their English. They were attentive and willing to respond to all our requests. The breakfast buffet was extensive and replenished regularly with more food as soon as the level dropped. The tables were cleared punctually so there was always room to sit. The evening meal was typically Sardinian - the cold plates and warm food is a typical Sicilian touch as we found in other restaurants which we used. We were served a choice of starter, choice of anti-pasta, choice of main course and sweet with free coffee in the bar after the meal. The bedrooms were of an adequate size with en suite facilities. We were lucky to get a room with a view over the town to the sea - make sure that you ask for one of these when you book - as the other romms overlook the road which goes past the hotel. The hotel offered to do our laundry for us and as it was done in house there was no charge for it. For a 3 stay hotel we found it to be more than adequate and would recommend it. For visitors looking for more luxurious facilities we suggest that you look at other hotels.

We would not recommend using Hotel Airone in future because the restaurant and bar service was very poor and the standard of food was abysmal.

The food was often cold or nearly cold.
The plates were always cold.
The portions were small
The menu was unimaginative and very limited
The service in the restaurant was slow.
There was no choice of wine, just one type of red or white.
The breakfast buffet was adequate but no staff around to help.
All the used breakfast dishes were left on the tables as others came in to eat.
For a three star hotel we find it unacceptable that we were given plastic beakers for breakfast.
On a number of occasions the meat was not cooked through
The bar service was frustrating in the extreme. Each time we would have to go to reception, ask for service and eventually a glum looking individual would appear at the bar and unsmilingly stare at you. This happened every one of the seven nights we were there.
Because the food at the hotel was so poor we actually ate out on three occasions in mid afternoon. This obviously increased our expenditure considerably.
