“Too good for words!!”
Reviewed 20 March 2012

The best time we (party of 8) ever had on a weekend away. Things run so smoothly there it is unbeleivable. The food just exeeded my wildest expectations and so did the service, the rooms and the general attitude and friendliness of the staff and the owners. This is one of those places where you have to go to to truly appreciate it and we still think "Wow" that was awesome...!!

We have just completed a 7 month Trans-Africa Adventure on our motorcycles and we stayed at Danforth Yachting in Malawi between the 20th and 24th November 2011. This is a wonderful place to stay and we highly recommend it!

We heard about Danforth when we were trying to organise travel through Malawi during the petrol crisis. A friend we met in Moçambique phoned Howard, the owner, and asked if he could advise on the fuel situation and help us out if necessary. From that moment on, our Malawi trip was on. Howard not only organised fual for us at his place, but also arranged various stops for us through the country where we could find fuel.

When we arrived at Danforth, Howard greeted us and gave us his undivided attention during our stay. Jan cooked and served up an excellent variety of delicious food and Pippa was a charming and attentive hostess. The rooms were large, comfortable and spotless with air-conditioning. The pool was amazing, right next to the beach and the grounds were kept in pristine order.

Howard and Michelle went beyond the call of duty to make our stay comfortable and help us achieve our onward journey through Malawi. They checked on road conditions and got us up to date information from their contacts through Malawi about accessiblity of places for motorbikes further up the country.

The staff at Danforth was friendly and relaxed and seemed to be happy and content, unlike some other white-owned lodges we've visited in Africa. The easy hospitality and attention to detail made it feel like we were visiting with old friends. In our travels through Africa we've stayed in a few top-end places but Danforth Yachting has been, without a doubt, the best value for money during our entire journey. It is pure indulgence and everyone there seems to enjoy what they do.

A word of advice - on the road to Danforth it's possible that you'll be approached by one or two sellers of trinkets, keyrings, curios, etc. It's best not to make any off-hand agreement to meet them later when you've settled in as they will take this as an invitation to keep visiting you and Howard and his staff then have to ask them to leave so as not to disturb you. There are lots of places to buy curios and support the local tradespeople in Cape Maclear and Howard will be happy to advise you on how to buy whatever you want locally without disrupting your peaceful stay.

We had the most wonderful stay at Cape Maclear starting off our honeymoon. Danforth is in a beautiful location where you can enjoy total relaxation while benefiting from all of the activities that the lake provides.

What really made our stay was the kind and hospitable attitude of Michelle and Howard (I'm afraid that I don't recognise the criticisms that I have seen on here at all). For example, the day that we left Danforth after a great stay, we picked up on the grapevine that there were problems around the availability of petrol in the area that we were heading to - Howard called ahead to arrange for someone to save some petrol for us to ensure that we didn't have difficulties. Then he also helped us out by arranging a lovely stop-off for the next stage in our honeymoon. Nothing was too much trouble. They really are wonderful hosts.

So all in all thanks for a wonderful trip.

I chose Danforth for 4 nights relaxation at the end of a trip to Malawi where I had spent some time working with an orphanage. I am so pleased I did. Michelle and Howard were excellent hosts and Pippa and Jan looked after me so well, especially when I succumbed to a stomach bug at the end of the trip. The food was lovely and the location quite serene.

I was part of the same group as the reviewer below. Great place in general but the treatment of our party at the end of our stay (having hired out the enitre place for two nights) was frankly bizzare, extremely rude and embarrassing for our Malawi-based guests... Danforth is the nicest looking place in Cape Maclear (and the only place with a pool) but, as below, make sure you don't stay past check-out time (even briefly!)...

Great place overall really with nice food and friendly staff. Shame about the South African owner (Howard) though. We took over the place for an apres wedding two day lower cost stay with many of the wedding guests after a fabulous time in the costly Robin Pope's Pumalani lodge up the coast..

First he let in two (white) friends to join us for evening drinks but the next night flatly refused to allow two other english friends in (one white and one black)

Then despite spending plenty he virtually threw us out on the last day and was very rude in my view. We checked out at 11am and had planned to leave at 11:30am for a lunch up the road at the Gecko lounge. At 11:30 Howard informed us out time was up and asked us to leave. We were distinctly pee'd off by this and it spoilt an otherwise very pleasant stay.

By all means go but don't overstay your welcome!

We are french and in july whe travelled 17 days in Malawi.
After some days in mountains and in Liwonde reserve, and before to go in north Malawi we stopped 3 nights in Danforth Yachting.
It is a fantastic spot with a top service.
Michelle and Howard are very kind and it seems that we are not in an hotel but with friends.
Cooking is wonderful , really high class ! congratulations !
And what about the LAKE ! from everywhere we can see it, and what to say about teh
it is as in a dream.
We enjoyed a lot our stay there, and we recommend that place in Cape Maclear.
It is the best plan in South Lake.
Thanks again for all the staff
we are as in family;
