We stayed here as a party of 5 for a week in September. The owner was very good in communicating and kindly met us on arrival (even though it was midnight) to show us around the villa and give us a few pointers. They had stocked the fridge will lots of fresh fruit, bread, drinks, butter, meats, cheese to name but a few and the cupboards had coffee and other bits presumably left by previous visitors. This is an exception to the norm as every villa ive stayed in previously has at most just had a bottle of water on arrival so this was a very nice welcome. The pool is great, wifi a bit patchy, kitchen too small to cook a meal (if you really wanted to...) and the living area and bedrooms spacious. The villas location is very good as its not to over looked and has panoramic views out to sea. A shop and good bar/restaurant is a 2 minutes walk away with the beach a little further and village just beyond. You really dont need a car as everything's within walking distance and if needed taxis are readily available and cheap enough. Our only moan is that the en-suite wet room in the master bedroom is far to small with a shower head that sprayed water everywhere but down and you have to build a dam of towels outside the door to prevent it flooding the landing and running down the stairs. We also missed not having a "Welcome Book" to refer to as most holiday lets provide with recommendations, phone numbers and handy villa information as we couldn't fathom how to get the hob to work. The positives far out weighed the negatives and we wouldnt hesitate in recommending Villa Costa Mare to holiday makers.
Stayed here with my daughter in September, and overall we were very happy with our choice; just a few points to beware which stop it being 5*, plus whilst not exorbitantly expensive, neither is this cheap - though excellent value if you fill it.
The villa is fairly new, in a block of half a dozen or so on a couple of steep, short, cul de-sacs, off the main road past Pefkos, and about 100m from the sea. I think it was advertised as three bedrooms, but it has four (one on the ground floor). Upstairs are three good sized twins / doubles, and a master - sort of en-suite, plus the main bathroom, which has a bath and overhead shower above. Downstairs there's a galley kitchen on entry, a big sitting / dining area, and the fourth bedroom - which also has a steam shower, and a separate toilet. Outside there is a small patio on the first floor, accessed from the master bedroom; and on the ground floor the swimming pool, small lawn, and barbecue area, with outside dining table. This villa faces west, so gets the sun all day.
The villa is very well equipped. TV / DVD / CD player downstairs; TVs in every bedroom - though channel choice is limited, and no British channels. Wifi throughout, which worked consistently well. There are books and a few DVDs. All linen is provided (again, seemingly for eight people), plenty of towels / sheets / spare pillows. The kitchen is well equipped - certainly enough pots and pans for eight people, and with a washing machine and dishwasher. The fridge / freezer was full size, with a useful ice machine. We arrived to a half loaded fridge, including wine, some beers, water, milk, cheese, bread, and dry goods in the cupboard: plus all the cleaning materials you might need. The owner / agent, waiting to meet us, was delightful - particularly as it was almost 1am when we arrived, and the contractuals regarding booking went smoothly. After a brief tour of the villa we never saw them again, but had a contact number if needed.
Beds were slightly firm, but with plenty of pillows, and nice bedding.
The air con was excellent, though - sensibly - the power in the house operates from a fob attached to the villa key. When you aren't there the power cuts to everything bar the fridge / freezer. That said, there are flu electric blinds on all the windows, and the air con only took a few minutes to get the house cool again. It also had a quiet mode - very useful at night: were there during an unseasonably hot week, and it was a real boon.
The pool was a good size, about 20' by 10', with a small spa adjoining to one side. It's about 5' deep, varying by around 3" at most. Cool in the morning, blissfully warm by evening. There were six sun loungers, and a couple of full-sized parasols. We were told that a man came to service the pool two or three times per week: we didn't see him, but we were in and out, and in any case there was no evidence of any issues / build up of debris etc. The pool was spotless.
We used the brick built barbecue one evening. We bought some charcoal, but there was already a bag. It was a good size, again all the required equipment was provided, and it worked well.
The villa is exactly half a mile from the end of the main drag through Pefkos, on the SW side away from Lindos. The centre of Pefkos is around 3/4 mile distant, but 'action' starts pretty much form that first junction. Across the road from the villa, and about 100 yds up, is another small 'complex', with a couple of tavernas, and a mini-market - providing most of the basics. The nearest main 'supermarket' is about ten minutes' drive away, at the junction where the main coast road splits for the Lindos loop.
We found the villa easily, even though it was night. The road is lit, and there is a name plate on the wall by the road. It was about 45 minutes' drive from Rhodes airport - once we got our car: another story…
There is a dedicated parking spot below the villa, next to the road. I'd suggest a car for getting around, but the island buses are fairly frequent, and seemed fairly reliable. The nearest stop was about 200 yards away.
Access to the nearest beach was gained by a track down the side of the nearby 'complex', and we hired a couple of loungers one day (11 euros the pair, with an umbrella) - these were nicely located on a raised grass strip, above the beach, below the complex; there were also larger curtained beds. The beach here was around 300 yds long, maybe 30 yds deep, sandy, with some shingle and rock outcrops, and a gently shelving beach into the water. It was fairly quiet, lots of space, with the bar at the aforementioned 'complex' close behind - where the loungers were paid for. The shingle was blisteringly hot - beware.
The slight niggles.
- There are a few ants around, and when we arrived they were already tucking into the fresh loaf that the owner / agent had bought for us. Some spray soon put paid to these for the rest of the week, and this is a warm climate, so not a surprise really.
- The kitchen area is a bit tight. If it were my villa I might have used the downstairs bedroom for a kitchen (I suspect other villas on the plot have done this). It was bearable for us two, but the lack of cupboard space was exacerbated by the copious provision of plates, pots and pans (for eight people!). We were struggling to find room for even a fairly modest food shop. Lack of work surface for food prep was also a hinderance. There is no microwave in the kitchen - probably because there would then be no space left at all, in case you're that way inclined, so on the two occasions we cooked it was on the hob one night, and the barbecue the other.
- The 'en-suite' bathroom is rather of the 'drop-in' cubicle style, more a large cupboard wet-room. The downstairs toilet is also tight. I have to say I didn't' get the steam room (hammam) in the downstairs bedroom, much less figure how to use it. Maybe one for a cool evening in January?
- The villa is slightly overlooked by two alongside, but not to the extent that we felt at all spied-upon.
- It is also alongside the road. Noise cancelling earphones were helpful. The road isn't over busy, maybe 5-10 vehicles per minute most of the day, but these include occasional lorries, and coaches and buses, which given the nature of the greek road surfaces can be somewhat percussive. At night the glazing more than copes with the road noise - so no problems there.
Enjoy: I'd certainly go back very happily. Do check other options though - other nearby villas are also available for rent.
