Reviewed 2 January 2014

We booked this hotel for a 1 night stay for the 1st Jan 2014. The friendly welcome we received upon arrival was lovely. Nothing too much trouble and they offered us the Aroha room, a larger room than we had booked for the same price. The rooms are nicely furnished, themed and kept in the heritage manner of the hotel's history. The bed was really comfortable. The self service continental breakfast was sufficient to start off on our day. Unfortunately the restaurant was closed but the town centre is an easy 5 minute walk. The restaurant/downstairs area is in need of refurbishment and the new owners said they are undertaking this in 2014. The location is great for access to the hot spa pools.

Room Tip: they all have views but the Aroha room was really nice.

We stayed at the Mokena on 2 Oct 2013. The receiption we received was great. The ladies were lovely. The reception and common areas needs some work, but the bedrooms were lovely, the bed most comfortable. The shower rooms were fantastic. Love the different levels and atmosphore of the hotel and the whole town. Fabulous deck for drinks and laughter.

Room Tip: We enjoyed the Mountain View room. The bed was very comfortable.

We stayed here for two nights 19 and 20th July. We throughly enjoyed our stay here. The managers were amazing nothing was to much trouble for them. Breakfast was waiting for us when we got up, great selection of choice even having nutella for our two girls which was a nice touch. Extremely profession and helpful. Our girls wanted to have a spa so they let them go into the honeymoon suite and spent 3 hours in there lapping it up. Each room has a heat pump and electric blankets which was very much appreciated. Clean tidy and well presented.

Next time I will bring my husband this place ticks all the boxes for a wonderful stay.

We stayed at Mokena a few years back and absolutely loved it and it has still kept up it's reputation! Such a lovely, warm and friendly place to be for an enjoyable stay in Te Aroha! The hotel itself has an amazing feel with lovely boutique rooms and decor with a touch of luxury and has a room to suit everyone's needs and not to mention the ideal location. The staff and manager/s are so friendly and helpful and we have no complaints what so ever! Would recommend Mokena 100% and will definitely be coming back very soon!

We booked with the hotel directly online on the Mokena website. When we arrived they never had a record of our booking (despite taking full payment by credit card at the time of booking) and when i showed the booking confirmation - the cleaner/manager said sorry we have had someone living in the room for the last two months! She showed us another room and it was in such a shocking state we felt we could not possibly stay there. It really was SHOCKING. I asked for a refund - and the manager said she had no idea how to give one.... Long story short - they now don't have any record of receiving payment and decline to reimburse. I am placing my issue in legal hands. Apparently the owner has done a runner and the ex is trying to keep what cash she can make and is not paying up on much...

Avoid this place at all costs unless you want to be ripped off or unless you want fleas.

The Aroha Mountain Lodge is a better place to stay by far. They ended up fitting us in when we ran in horror from Mokena...

AVOID AT ALL COSTS

Room Tip: Do not stay here

Hotel with character. We did stay in Queens Room with huge spa and nice view olf the mountain. There in Te Aroha, are only two pubs you can eat during public holiday. These two hotels are serving dinners in shifts. During low seas one day Grand Tavern is open for meals and on the other day is the Palace Hotel where we were,. Food was excellent.
Town? Is a very small , sleepy town with perhaps some future. This town was established as a SPA way before Rotorua and it does not stinks.
Mineral waters SPA simply fantastic (walking distance). You have to book in advanc these private, huge, wooden tubs for you naked enjoyment. Buzzer will notify you about you time so there is no pressure to watch the watch.Nice Stop before you reach Cathedral Cove.

My husband and I have had the pleasure of staying twice at Mokena Hotel! The first time was so relaxing and enjoyable that when we had the opportunity to return to Te Aroha with other family members I had no hesitation in recommending that we all stay at Mokena. As usual Mokena was perfect. It is extremely comfortable and clean with appealing rooms, good beds and linen, great showers, warm cosy atmosphere and very welcoming hostess. The rooms are great and the guest lounge has everything a traveller may need for a night (or day) in - books, magazines, puzzles and games for the kids and a TV. We enjoyed the sauna after a days bike riding. Diane was very helpfull and obliging and both times she went out of her way to make sure we had an enjoyable stay. If you are looking for a flash, new, upmarket hotel don't go to Te Aroha, however if you like charming, old world style you will probably enjoy Mokena. This hotel is also extremely well priced and includes a continental breakfast! (I highly recommend the homemade toasted muesli!) We left relaxed, rested and thinking about a return visit!
