“Good food, poor service and rude staff”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 February 2014 via mobile

We were recommended the hotel because of the live steel band that was playing last night. Not sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. As a group of 6 we were offered a table outside which was very nice. We enquired about food and the waitress said she would bring us a menu, did we want drinks? Once the drinks order was clarified following some earlier confusion we waited for the menus. These did not arrive and after 15-20 minutes went for the buffet. The food was hot, fresh and very tastey. During our meal two members of the group ordered two more beers, however these did not arrive! After 30 minutes we went to the bar to purchase them separately. We had a very pleasant evening and requested the bill as it drew to a close. As requested 3 separate bills eventually arrived, however were were charged for the two beers that were ordered but not received. When we queried this with our waitress she became very argumentative and adamant we had had the two beers. She proceeded to be very rude and not willing to discuss the matter so we asked to speak to the manager! She wasn't happy but moved away to talk to a colleague, she then returned, snatched the bills and disappeared. Approximately 15 minutes later returned with revised bills. The beers in question only totalled 12B$ and we were only pointing this discrepancy out as there was more than enough money to pay the bill and provide a good tip. However after our bitter experience we settled the bill and left NO tip.

It was a shame this incident had spoilt a lovely night with new friends and would not rush back.

Can't fault Hotel, Beach and Staff (found Sandy the guy who looked after the beach extremely pleasant)
Would defiantly recommend Southern Palms as very clean and tidy with friendly helpful staff.
I would say the beach was one of the best on the island and we were not bothered or pestered by anyone for the duration of the stay.
Walking distance to some good restaurants and only a short cab journey to others, food in hotel was also very good.

We have been staying at the Southern Palms for several years now and we consider it rather a find. The hotel itself is spacious, comfortable, friendly and unpretentious and the location is terrific - a short walk to some of the Gap's excellent restaurants, and a short drive to the exquisite beaches of the S coast (though the hotel's own beach is very beautiful and seldom busy). We like the hotel's laid-back style, and the rooms, especially the suites, are generously proportioned with fabulous views. The staff are generally helpful and efficient, and the hotel has a traditional Bajan feel. Seeing baby turtles hatch out on the beach? Well, that's a bonus!

Generally excellent. Staff were very friendly. The beach-front view was fantastic. The only criticisms are:-
1. Saturday night entertainment was so loud that sleep was impossible. 2. The bed was hard.

Room Tip: Softer bed please

Have been visiting Barbados for the past 20 years, found this hotel to be everything we needed.
Ocean view room large with all amenities. Very clean and maid sevice daily and prompt.
Only used the beach bar for drinks, a little pricey though.
Location is great and you can walk into the gap to sample numerous restaurants and bars.
If you dont want to hire a car the island beach safari is a great day out and gives you a sample of Barbados. Lovely lunch at the sugar cane club too.
Will definitely return to this lovely hotel.

Lovely place to stay if you love being on a beach, watching the turtles, like a relaxed atmosphere and a friendly staff. We returned for 9 nights at the end of January after visiting last year. Still as nice! Beds big and comfy and although the bathrooms are a little small that is the only thing that we would not give a 5, but hey how long do you want to spend in there! Great location as can walk to a number of bars and restaurants (Champers is a cab away but worth it!) and the beach is beautiful. We loved it and can't wait for our next visit!

The previous reviewer beat me to it but the service in the hotel restaurant was absolutely shocking! Been going away for 40 years now and this hotel ran away with my worst restaurant service award! Despite this, I gave the hotel 3 stars. My wife and I booked a sea view room for a week. That was fine. It was a first floor room and it did have a good view of the sea. It was large, had a fridge for drinks, good air-con, a couple of chairs and table, plenty of cupboard/storage space, nice balcony, massive double bed, OK bath and shower, big TV (with the usual rubbish programs - no change there then) and was cleaned every day. So that was good. Location of the hotel is terrific - right on the beach.
We booked half-board so got breakfast and dinner each day. Buffet breakfast was very good to be honest. Loads of fresh fruit and cereals with fresh tomatoes, cheese, smoked salmon, croissants, toast, etc and a number of hot plates with bacon (crispy US style), sausages, beans, corned beef (I think), fish, potatoes and someone to cook eggs any way you wanted them. The first morning there we had the 'egg man' doing the eggs. He spent some time muttering about the 'English' under his breath and we didn't think he was saying how nice they were... He wasn't there for the rest of the week, otherwise we'd have been avoiding the eggs! So that was pretty good.
But the service at dinner was frankly appalling. We arrived on a Sunday and I went down early around 7.00 p.m. to find out what was happening. The dining room can hold about 50 people I reckon and it was pretty empty, but when I asked someone who I took to be the maitre d' what we needed to do I was just asked 'Have you booked?' Nothing else. We hadn't booked as we were hotel guests and I've never had to book before when I stayed somewhere that is primarily catering for in-house, so I just said 7.30 and went back to our room none the wiser really. When we came back down, we were asked our room number and shown to a table. We were then presented with 2 glasses of water and the menus - which were limited to a choice of 3 items per course (3 courses). 15 minutes later someone pitched up and asked us what we wanted to eat. We also asked for a beer and a glass of wine then as they didn’t ask about drinks. 15 minutes later we got our drinks, 45 minutes later we got our starters. 45 minutes after that we got our main course and 30 minutes after that my wife had a dessert - I couldn't be bothered. We finally left 2 and a half hours after we had arrived having had the 3 course meal and a couple of drinks and 2 glasses of wine between us... Things did improve a bit over the rest of the week but it always took a couple of hours and we cut things down to one drink (or none) and NEVER waited for coffee!
You got the impression they just didn't want us there. But the food itself was very, very good, though the prices quoted were also very, very high. Main courses on our little menu went up to around 75 Barbados Dollars – which is about £25. Starters were about £10. I can’t remember the cost of desserts as we rarely had them, but with tea and coffee you’d have been looking at around £80 for two without drinks if you came in off the street or were just doing B&B… Every day had different choices of 3 items per course.
Apart from that, the beach itself is beautiful and quiet, though you can't swim in the sea - which is lovely and warm - unless you want to take chances with the undertow, Red Flags all week! We waded in up to our knees first day and promptly got flattened by the waves… All the beaches in Barbados are public but there was always loads of room to get a sunbed under a palm tree – provided free by the hotel.
Staff outside the restaurant were fine. Free afternoon tea and cake at 4 p.m. was great - before girding our loins for dinner!!!

Other things worth mentioning are that the room safe costs $3 US a day though you can use the one at the lobby for free.
Staff at reception are good – of course everyone speaks English!
There is a 50 Barbados Dollars deposit on beach towels – refunded when you return them at the end of your holiday.
Free internet on a couple of p/c’s off the lobby.
Taxis are an absolute rip off. They aren’t metred and the drivers will quote a ridiculous rate before you knock them down to a slightly lower ridiculous rate – use the little buses if you can. They cost $1 US to anywhere on the island. The hotel itself is about ten minutes from the main road so you will have to walk there to get the bus. Taxis wait outside the hotel and are everywhere.

I forgot about the pools. There are 2 small pools. They are fine though very deep so not child friendly.

If you want to hire a car, do so a couple of days in advance as they go quickly and they are pricey. We ended up with something that two of us could just about squeeze into for about £70 for 1 day where the key was so bent I was petrified I was going to break it each time I turned the ignition on or off...
Oistins is worth a visit on Fridays for the atmosphere as the food is a bit naff really, though it's cheap(ish). And the submarine trip is really worth doing! There is also a trip around the island the 'Bajan Experience' or something which costs about $80US per person which is extremely good value.
There are a couple of convenience stores 5 minutes away either side of the hotel which are a bit pricey, but if you walk towards Bridgetown for about 10-15 minutes you come to a supermarket which is much cheaper.
That's it. We spent a week at the hotel. Not sure if I recommend it or not, but Barbados itself is lovely.

Room Tip: Get a room on the 1st or 2nd floors – only 3 floors – as the ground floors either look over the main...
