I’m going to start with the bad and work through to the many good points about this hotel.

The first comment relates to the… it can’t be called a welcome, just a registration process. The receptionist gave the impression that she was irritated that we wanted to check in. No hint of a smile, just a peremptory demand for the voucher provided by Virgin Holidays. The food in the restaurant is not particularly good but that doesn’t really matter because there are so many good restaurants nearby but the female staff all seemed to resent our presence. The men, by contrast, were cheerful and friendly. Room cleaning was done on what my mother would have called ‘a lick and a promise’: beds were made, towels were changed but there wasn’t much evidence of anything else. Finally, there’s a cricket ground about 100 yards from the hotel and on the middle Friday night (we were there 2 weeks), they had a game with a PA system wound up to an astonishing level. It kept going until 02:00 (yes – 2 am). I heard the commentator at that point thanking the spectators. Inside our room. With the doors shut.

Now to the good stuff. It’s a great location. Dover beach must be one of the best beaches on the island with white sand, the beautiful blue of the Caribbean and palm trees. You sit at breakfast looking out at that view and, because we had an ocean view room, we had a decent-sized balcony where we could sit out and enjoy the sight and watch for turtles just offshore. Obviously, you step out of the hotel straight onto the beach. One thing to be aware of is that sometimes the currents directly in front of the hotel mean that you need to go to the east end of the beach to swim but that’s no great hardship.

So far as eating is concerned, there’s a huge choice in the neighbourhood. Come out of the hotel and turn right and you’ll find places such as Scotty’s serving traditional Bajan food. It’s in Styrofoam containers with plastic knives and forks but it’s very good and cheap. Turn left and you go upmarket with the best of the lot in our experience being Harlequin. There’s a terrific range between those two extremes and prices range from around 15 Bajan dollars (about £5) for a meal for one and a beer at Scotty’s to maybe ten times that for a meal for two with a cocktail each at Harlequin.

In the hotel, the beds were very comfortable (two queen-size beds in the room we had) with air con although we often preferred to leave the door to the room and the doors to the balcony open so there was a breeze through the room. Yes, there’s a TV but it shows mostly American stations which seems to involve watching more ads than programme.

All in all, a good choice.

We booked the Southern Palms through Virgin Holidays and we were not disappointed. We were given a ground floor room, which although it was not advertised with sea views, had a large terrace overlooking the ocean. The room was well presented, newly decorated and had a flat screen TV, air conditioning and a decent bathroom. We were very pleased that we were only a few steps from the beach, particularly as it meant that we could sit on the beach during the day and our son could go in and out of the room as he pleased, with us close by. The hotel felt very safe, with plenty of staff around, even at night, when security would pass by our room, which was at the far end of the hotel.
The hotel itself stretches over a large part of beautiful Dover Beach, one of the most stunning beaches in all of Barbados. At certain times of the year you can actually watch turtles hatching here. It is built in 2 styles, most of the buildings are quite traditional in architecture but there is a more modern section near the smaller of the two swimming pools. This is where the free afternoon tea and cakes are served at 4pm each day - something we really enjoyed!
The hotel caters mostly for an older crowd but as a family with a young son, we had a marvellous time. We would eat a large breakfast and then skip lunch and go out for dinner at one of the lovely restaurants on the Gap. Our favourites are Cafe Sol, Bellinis, Sharkeys and the Indian (can't remember the name!). Do go to Oistins for the fish fry too!
We played the mini golf every day and found the little hut with equipment an excellent resource. We learned how to play shuffle board, we borrowed a boogie board and also inflatables for the pool. We booked a free tennis court every day and had wonderful George, the Pro, give our son lessons. He had him achieving so much in an incredibly short time. He was so kind, gentle and patient and our son responded to him immediately.
What else can I say? We decided not to take any trips because we had everything we could wish for at The Southern Palms. Any downsides? Perhaps the service at the bar could be a little lethargic at times, especially if you ordered food. But in general, I have only good things to say about this hotel and the staff. I would love to go back. I can honestly say this was one of the best holidays we have ever had.

Room Tip: Our ground floor room near the beach made the holiday extra special - we could go to our fridge to b...

This hotel has a great location on a beautiful beach. We had a large ocean view room with large balcony. It was well equipped with 6 ft bed, fridge, iron, kettle, nearly silent aircon. We really liked our room. It was cleaned daily. The staff were helpful and pleasant (apart from one or two unsmiling bar staff). There was good security surveillance. The only downside was the poor expensive food, apart from one lunch when our sandwiches were good. However the location of the restaurant was really lovely. Mostly we ate elsewhere. If you didn't mind paying a lot, you could eat quite well.

Room Tip: We loved our ocean view room in the Carlisle building. It was very quiet indeed, though another hot...

My wife and I had a very enjoyable lunch over looking the beach. The restaurant is nicely situated on the beach. They had a steel band playing this Sunday afternoon. Some of the people were dancing.
Our bartender, Anderson, was great. He was very attentive. June also helped serve us.
We had the Mahi Mahi sandwich and steak sandwich with fries. They were delicious.
We also had a few rum drinks and Banks Beer. The rum drinks were great.
Enjoy the scene at this hotel restaurant in St. Lawrence Gap.

Perfectly situated right on the beach and only a short walk from lively Gap area with bars and restaurants. You can even watch floodlit cricket just up the road and sing karaoke with the locals - great! Pay extra for a sea view room, it's worth it. Reception friendly and helpful. Would definitely visit again. Great island.

MY wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel from Sunday 9th February to Sunday 16th February. The hotel room was very clean, large and serviced every day. The hotel grounds were well maintained and tidy. We found the location right on the beach first class. My only complaint (although not my wife s) was the very slow service (in my opinion ) in the restaurant and bar. The bar lacked atmosphere unless there was entertainment on .We enjoyed the musical entertainment of The Redmen, The Barbados Steel Orchestra and Syndikyt. We would certainly return to this hotel in the future.
