Our review is essentially to help people travelling with small children (toddler age) make an informed choice but we also hope to include some handy tips for any potential guests.
We opted for a ocean facing one bedroom suite. This was spacious and lovely and the standard of cleaning was pretty good. The kitchenette is very well equipped and we made a couple of meals here for ourselves and our daughter. The washing machine/dryer were great to keep packing light.
A clean and good quality cot bed was provided for our daughter although we had to request an additional towel as it was not considered we would need one for her (often over-looked in hotels). For our one bedroom suite (203) the bedroom was very dark so no need for a travel black-out curtain if you use one.
Areas to consider:
We tried to sleep on the sofa-bed on the first night but it was really not comfortable and was like sleeping on a down-ward slide. As a sofa, it's not really one than more than one person can comfortably relax on lying down. The bed in the bedroom is soft - so if you need a hard bed, this is probably not going to be your best night's sleep.
Oddly no lounger style chairs on the balcony for these rooms - even though there is ample space. If you put two of the outdoor table chairs together you can make do, but it would be better to have lounge style chairs available to really enjoy the balcony.
No bath in the room but baby baths are available - however these are the not the traditional baby baths they are the moulded chair style support baths more suited to a new-born. The kitchen sink is deep enough to use as a make-shift bath, but the plug would not work. So bath time before bed was not a calming, wind-down activity as we juggled her between the baby bath and holding her as the shower floor was way too slippery for her to stand on.
You can rent high-chairs and other baby equipment but we brought our own monitor and just held her on our laps for meals. I really think high-chairs should not come at an additional cost.
We included breakfast in our holiday package and the standard was ok. Not amazing but not terrible either. All we wanted - freshly cooked omelette, toast and fresh fruit and we got it and some delicious banana bread too. The staff were very friendly and we did not have to wait long for anything.
Room service was only used once - it's expensive and the quality was ok. Most venues do take-away very well so stick to that. The cocktails at the pool bar are lovely - even nicer during Happy Hour.
The coconut ice-blocks are DELICIOUS although they were not served at the same time each day so we missed out if our daughter needed her nap after lunch. But we soon learnt that the staff will put one away for you if you request it and one gorgeous staff member Shantelle even offered to bring it up to my room when my daughter was napping.
It's a short drive from the airport and within walking distance there are some reasonable dining/take-away food options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Dover Market across the road has most 'convenience' things but we really didn't like the fruit/veg or meat selection there so we did not cook as much as we wanted. Sunscreen is expensive and the baby/toddler food selection is limited so lucky we brought our own. We were told other supermarkets about 10 minutes by car from the hotel were better - but we really didn't want to waste time going there and decided to just eat locally.
When out with our daughter, we were never hassled about drugs, however when my husband went out alone to get lunch/dinner, he was frequently offered drugs and prostitutes but not in an overly aggressive manner. Funnily enough, the people who tried to sell you jewellery by day were often the ones selling other things at night.
The hotel is on the beach however at the time of our visit, you really could not swim immediately in front of the hotel. Dover beach is a short walk away however depending on the tides, you may need to walk along the road rather than along the beach to reach there safely/carrying bags. During our time, Dover Beach was not always calm but we still enjoyed swimming there. If you are looking for that post-card perfect calm water, you may need to consider another location. We visited Carlisle Bay and found this to be exceptionally calm and clear for swimming.
Definitely go to the rooftop pool - the views are spectacular.
We didn't have problems securing a sun bed on the beach but we did see people up at 6 am placing their towels on the pool-side loungers. In the afternoon, we would simply 'take-over' apparently empty loungers and we never once had anyone come back to claim them.
The music from the lobby at night can be heard in your hotel room! The acoustics of the lobby are spectacular but thankfully there is not music every night. The volume really needs to be turned down but amazingly our daughter did not wake from it. It was more annoying for us as adults.
A late check out (2 hours later) will cost you USD 50 - we wanted our daughter to sleep so we paid it but I do feel that is a high cost when the time was not long past check-out.
Overall we would recommend this hotel to couples and small families. There are definitely more couples than children, but as parents with a toddler we were made to feel very welcome.
