“Overall good, but...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 April 2014

Overall this hotel is well maintained and generally the staff want to provide a good service.

We had an ocean suite room, the views were beautiful, the only downside is the suite configuration, this gives the bedroom no window and we found this to be quite oppressive.

Housekeeping are excellent in this hotel, nothing is too much trouble, from extra towels to having your room serviced when you need it to be rather than 'the norm' of when it can be fitted in.
Romel and Shamira (sorry if they are spelt wrong) on reception are super efficient, from local knowledge, restaurants and car hire. Generally reception is helpful, but there are a few that do not listen, second guess the situation or question and we ended up having to re-do some things ourselves. There is a flipancy with some staff members in this hotel and it's a mixture of the Bajan laid back manner 'which is lovely' but also the fact the majority are very young and exude confidence bordering on too confident. The main trick is they need to listen a bit more please.
Pool and beach staff are very helpful, we wanted to bring Andre home with us, he is so comical and smiley. Great touches - that you get ice lolleys brought out to you at 1130, 2 happy hours lunchtime and 16.30 and also they spray you with a cooling menthal water vapour when sunbathing and also give you fresh flannels to refresh.

The TV said that we were and welcomed a Nigel Planner for the full 2 weeks, the tv signal is appalling.

There is a level of noise which is disturbing when you are trying to relax on the beach as there are house renovations ongoing to the left hand side rear of the hotel, drilling, banging etc. Not so great when you are trying to listen to the sea and chill out.

St Lawrence Gap has a number of good restaurants for the evenings and is only 10 minutes walk. If you want a good breakfast try to Ocean 15 restaurant at the side of the hotel as this is very comptetitive and good value compared to this hotel's own breakfast, and they also do smashing coffee at Ocean 15-hotel coffeee is not good :(

Don't do Oistins on the Friday with the shuttle bus, it's too busy and manufactured. If you fancy it, ry it on your own and try it on the Saturday night when it is quieter and try George's for some fresh marlin or flying fish.

Room Tip: Ocean view! Try and get a room on the rear, and to the right away from beach house renovations.

My husband and I stayed at Ocean Two for 7 nights in March. We stayed in a 1 bedroom ocean front suite. Overall, we were very happy with our choice. The staff was very accommodating and friendly. The beach and pool areas were well maintained, our suite was spacious, well equipped and immaculate. Ocean Two is located at the end of the St. Lawrence Gap and is only a 5 minute walk to the center of the St. Lawrence Gap. We loved that we were able to walk to a bunch of restaurants and bars and didn’t have to rent a car. The only criticisms I have are that a lot of people tend to leave their stuff on pool chairs for hours to reserve them. The hotel does monitor this, but it still happens. Also, the water in the shower only gets hot for a few minutes and warm after that. And we took the hotel’s shuttle to Oistin’s Fish Fry. The hotel arranged for a few tables with sit down service for us. The service at Oistin’s Fish Fry was awful. We were there for 2 hours, ordered as soon as we sat down and yet my husband and one other person got their meal 5 minutes before we were supposed to be back on Ocean Two’s van. Everyone in our group ordered the same meal so I don’t really understand why they only brought out some of them at once. We saw many people ordering their food at the vendor’s window with no problems. This is not Ocean Two’s fault but I feel like I should warn anyone that if you are going to take advantage of the shuttle to Oistin’s Fish Fry, do yourself a favor and don’t do the sit down service. Other than that, we had an excellent stay at Ocean Two!

Our review is essentially to help people travelling with small children (toddler age) make an informed choice but we also hope to include some handy tips for any potential guests.

Hotel rooms

We opted for a ocean facing one bedroom suite. This was spacious and lovely and the standard of cleaning was pretty good. The kitchenette is very well equipped and we made a couple of meals here for ourselves and our daughter. The washing machine/dryer were great to keep packing light.

A clean and good quality cot bed was provided for our daughter although we had to request an additional towel as it was not considered we would need one for her (often over-looked in hotels). For our one bedroom suite (203) the bedroom was very dark so no need for a travel black-out curtain if you use one.

Areas to consider:

We tried to sleep on the sofa-bed on the first night but it was really not comfortable and was like sleeping on a down-ward slide. As a sofa, it's not really one than more than one person can comfortably relax on lying down. The bed in the bedroom is soft - so if you need a hard bed, this is probably not going to be your best night's sleep.

Oddly no lounger style chairs on the balcony for these rooms - even though there is ample space. If you put two of the outdoor table chairs together you can make do, but it would be better to have lounge style chairs available to really enjoy the balcony.

No bath in the room but baby baths are available - however these are the not the traditional baby baths they are the moulded chair style support baths more suited to a new-born. The kitchen sink is deep enough to use as a make-shift bath, but the plug would not work. So bath time before bed was not a calming, wind-down activity as we juggled her between the baby bath and holding her as the shower floor was way too slippery for her to stand on.

You can rent high-chairs and other baby equipment but we brought our own monitor and just held her on our laps for meals. I really think high-chairs should not come at an additional cost.

Food

We included breakfast in our holiday package and the standard was ok. Not amazing but not terrible either. All we wanted - freshly cooked omelette, toast and fresh fruit and we got it and some delicious banana bread too. The staff were very friendly and we did not have to wait long for anything.

Room service was only used once - it's expensive and the quality was ok. Most venues do take-away very well so stick to that. The cocktails at the pool bar are lovely - even nicer during Happy Hour.

The coconut ice-blocks are DELICIOUS although they were not served at the same time each day so we missed out if our daughter needed her nap after lunch. But we soon learnt that the staff will put one away for you if you request it and one gorgeous staff member Shantelle even offered to bring it up to my room when my daughter was napping.

Location

It's a short drive from the airport and within walking distance there are some reasonable dining/take-away food options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Dover Market across the road has most 'convenience' things but we really didn't like the fruit/veg or meat selection there so we did not cook as much as we wanted. Sunscreen is expensive and the baby/toddler food selection is limited so lucky we brought our own. We were told other supermarkets about 10 minutes by car from the hotel were better - but we really didn't want to waste time going there and decided to just eat locally.

When out with our daughter, we were never hassled about drugs, however when my husband went out alone to get lunch/dinner, he was frequently offered drugs and prostitutes but not in an overly aggressive manner. Funnily enough, the people who tried to sell you jewellery by day were often the ones selling other things at night.

Beach

The hotel is on the beach however at the time of our visit, you really could not swim immediately in front of the hotel. Dover beach is a short walk away however depending on the tides, you may need to walk along the road rather than along the beach to reach there safely/carrying bags. During our time, Dover Beach was not always calm but we still enjoyed swimming there. If you are looking for that post-card perfect calm water, you may need to consider another location. We visited Carlisle Bay and found this to be exceptionally calm and clear for swimming.

Other tips

Definitely go to the rooftop pool - the views are spectacular.

We didn't have problems securing a sun bed on the beach but we did see people up at 6 am placing their towels on the pool-side loungers. In the afternoon, we would simply 'take-over' apparently empty loungers and we never once had anyone come back to claim them.

The music from the lobby at night can be heard in your hotel room! The acoustics of the lobby are spectacular but thankfully there is not music every night. The volume really needs to be turned down but amazingly our daughter did not wake from it. It was more annoying for us as adults.

A late check out (2 hours later) will cost you USD 50 - we wanted our daughter to sleep so we paid it but I do feel that is a high cost when the time was not long past check-out.

Overall we would recommend this hotel to couples and small families. There are definitely more couples than children, but as parents with a toddler we were made to feel very welcome.

The hotel itself is beautiful and only two years old. We had room 611 on the side of the building. The two bedroom two bathroom was huge and the kitchen had plenty of usable equipment. The bathrooms and showers are excellent. We have timeshare we trade and these villas are nicer than any Marriott we have been to and house keeping does a wonderful job; the place is spotless!
The staff is friendly and hardworking in particular Katie, Melinda and Darien! A sure sign for me that the hotel cares about its guests was when I checked my bill half way through the week and they had removed my charge for my in room groceries I pre-ordered. The order came late and was incorrect but they remedied it so I didn't think twice about it. I appreciated that they felt it was a problem and they comped it! A pleasant surprise!
The pool is great and the chairs are very comfy. I saw complaints about people reserving chairs but while we were there they clearly told people there was a 1/2 hour rule.
As for food we only ate lunch at the resort once and it was tasty. After reading reviews about how pricey and how bad the breakfast was we decided to bring food items from home and opted to eat breakfasts and lunches in the villa. This was the smartest thing we did because the island is very pricey!
As for getting around, the hotel is on a street with tons of restaurants within walking distance - some good, some over rated. We liked Cafe Sol for a reasonable priced Mexican place. The strip is filled with locals selling their wares-some nice and some very pushy. ( and pushing drugs but we traveled with a child so they didn't really bother us) If you need to go off property use Mr Best!! The front desk can book his car service for you. Make sure to try the Friday night dinner at Oistins Fish Fry!
I have only one complaint about the resort and that is the location of it. It is smack in the middle of the local town and our villa while it had partial ocean view, it also had a view of the garbage truck below and the tops of not so attractive buildings. The worst part was 3 nights that week we were kept awake by a local bar's karaoke contest. In all fairness to Ocean Two they are petitioning this but unfortunately even their calls to the local police did not stop the noise. If you have a direct ocean view you may not have this experience. I also don't like the fact that the resort is not gated. There didn't seem to be an issue with locals coming in but nevertheless it left a little feeling of insecurity. All in all this was a wonderful vacation and the hotel definitely caters to its guests!

Room Tip: perhaps spend the extra money to get an ocean view and book a higher floor

From the very first moment as I walked into reception to see the view through the hotel to the clear blue sea I fell in love with this hotel.
Chilled towels and rum punch at check in, 3 levels of pools, swim up bar and straight onto the white sands of an almost private bay....heaven!
They also have an adults only roof top pool with amazing views.
The rooms are appartment style with fitted out kitchens and washing machines. We had a 1 bed ( very comfortable) with the kids on a sofa bed in the sitting room.
The biggest shower room ever, size of my whole bathroom back home.

The staff are fabulous, so helpful and attentive.
We ate twice in the restaurant and it was delish.

The only down side was we only stayed 2 nights as our awful all inclusive resort was fully booked( god knows why) Every day I regretted leaving ocean 2.

This review is late, but definitely important to my wife and I. We stayed here on our honeymoon in May 2013. It was beautiful. The resort is fantastic. Our one bedroom suite with an ocean view was excellent. The suite was modern and very nice. The best part was the balcony with a view of the ocean. So peaceful and so beautiful. You have chairs to lay out on the balcony. It was so great spending time there. I wish I was there right now as I am writing this. You can go relax on the beach or use the pool. You can actually hang out in the pool while you are getting drinks from one of their bars. The suite came up with a kitchen which was very useful. The resort itself is new and updated. It is a bit expensive, but if you are looking for a memorable vacation, it is worth it. Barbados is my favorite island after visiting. The only complaint I would have is the restaurant. After reading reviews before our trip, we decided not to get the all inclusive package for food. Glad we did that. There are so many restaurants within walking distance and only a short cab ride away. You will want to go and explore when it comes to food. The restaurant at the resort is expensive and does not offer a lot of variety. Barbados is an amazing island with friendly people. If you are looking for a great place to stay with an ocean view, this is an excellent choice.

Room Tip: Definitely get a room with an ocean view! It is worth it!

We were so unsure which hotel to book this one or one further up the coast. We booked the right one, this hotel and staff are amazing, they cannot do enough for you but they are not in your face cheesy. The suite we had was beautiful with amazing sea views and it was cleaned each day with fresh towels daily and a bed linen change every 3 days. We stayed for 10 days and there are plenty of nice restaurants within a short walk away up to The Gap but the food in the hotel is pretty good too. Happy hour twice a day means 2 for 1 cocktails or wine or whatever you like. We did two tours a Just Jammin boat trip where we swam with sea turtles and over the coral reef with lovely fish, the cruise was amazing and definitely the highlight of our holiday. We also did an Island Safari bobbing round the island in an open Land Rover which was fun and great to see the island in full. Some other guests visited the caves in land which they said were great. Now the weather, we had one rainy day during our stay. It's very warm in the sun at the moment and there is no need for any other layers at night it stays nice and warm, its quite breezy on some days but the sand doesn't kick up on the beach but swimming in the sea is a little tricky with the big waves. The hotel has nice pools and great large red loungers surrounding the pool, there is no fight over sun beds the staff will always find you one and there are ample towels at your disposal, I took my own beach towel but it wasn't needed. There were a few families and couples with babies but on the whole the majority of people staying are couples which suited us. The suite had a washing machine and tumble drier so you can go home with clean clothes! There is a small supermarket just outside the hotel which sold all you need, we went with nothing other than tea bags. Some things are pricey and others reasonable. So we return home sad to leave but feeling rested and energised, I would return to this hotel if we were to visit Barbados again for sure.

Room Tip: Chose a suite with a sea view.
