In the beginning I have to say, that I was not staying at this hotel. On the base of good reviews in Tripadvisor and Booking I wanted stay here 2 nights, arrived after 2pm - regular time of check-in - without reservation and after long waiting time enquired receptionist if there are some rooms available. In opposite to the majority of hotel staff in Spain she was very arrogant, answered, the room will be available after 3 pm, I agreed with later check in but asked her to see the room, she answered it is impossible. My overall impression was, she is bothered by potential guests, she does not want to sell the room and get my money, so I sat down to my Mercedes and left to look for another hotel.

A very beautiful hotel in a great spot, the service though way below the 4 stars. Especially the breakfast was a major disappointment as the hotel does not offer any warm egg dishes. When we asked why we could not get a scrambled egg we were told that today the kitchen had no chef....can you believe?

This was a rare find; thanks to InnsOfSpain.com! Else we would have never stayed in the quiet, charming village of Altafulla and neither have had discovered Gran Claustre. The hotel is built in a heritage-structure and a part of an ancient monastery; but with completely renovated interiors with modern furnishings. Our family of 4 fitted very comfortably in the suite which had 2 large double-beds in 2 adjacent rooms, a tiny balcony and lovely big bathroom. The hotel had a nice pool in the adjacent building, good breakfast buffet spread and a small library.
Altafulla itself is a quiet village with old-style buildings, a lovely white-sand beach and also quite close to the Roman city of Tarragona and the fantastic Porta Aventura amusement park. So it was a perfect getaway from the city-life of Barcelona, yet with plenty of things to do around the place. Do not miss eating out at the restaurant down the street called Les Bruixes-an utterly charming family-style restaurant with brightly coloured stucco walls, paintings hung all around, authentic catalan food and a warm hostess who readily agreed to stir-up an off-the-menu pasta for my daughter! Will surely recommend Gran Claustre for tourists who wish to visit an offbeat place without touristy crowds and yet with wonderful ambience, sand and the sea!

Room Tip: Do take the Suite for families

Altafulla nis a gem of a place, mixing real Catalan working town with antiquity, and not far from a not crowded beach.
The Gran Claustre is an interesting place, split on 2 sides of the tiny way up to the old town. The buildings have been gutted at great expense, and a thoroughly modern centre put in. The architect must have had real fun designing it, and the communal areas are stunning. Our room was quite small but had a reasonable sized terrace outside. The hotel has a small pool, which looked good until I got in and realised that the resident pigeons also used it for their dips, and a layer f pigeon detriment and feathers was apparent. Breakfasts were good, but the staff did not cope well with the rush hour. The rooms would benefit from coffee making facilities. Our safe did not work, and despite mentioning it nothing was done.
Our room was just OK. The bed had seen better days, and a cocophany of spring noises greeted any movement. We had no bath, and the beautifully tiled shower room suffered from lack of pressure. Free internet was by cable, and there was no work surface / desk to work from. The nice balcony had old cigarette ends scattered around, and the maid made little effort to change or fold towels.
It saddens me to see somewhere with great potential to be loosing it by a lack of any attention to detail. .

Gran Claustre is a perfect hideaway location for a short escape from it all. Despite the medieval setting next to the town's medieval castle, the decoration is contemporary but warm. Especially the larger rooms radiate a classy but understated elegance. The combination of spa, finest dining, pleasant rooms and a perfect setting in town not far from the beaches make it a great value for money. We liked the spa with its friendly and competent employees, including a native Tibetan therapist doing miracles on my aching back. We like the creative cuisine of the resident chef, focusing on healthy Mediterranean fare. There are only a few details that warrant improvement: there is no bar, so that business discussions need to be done either in the restaurant or in the open receptions area, which is not perfect for privacy. Also, the website should include more languages on top of the usual Catalan, Spanish and English. David L.
