Reviewed 3 July 2007

We stayed at the Long Point at Play Cottages at the Lake for one night as part of our two week trip to Ontario and Michigan from the UK in May/June 2007.

We wanted to visit the Long Point Bird Observatory and searched the internet before we departed for the best place to stay. The atPlay cottages are rentable by the day and fully equipped, as well as being located only a few miles from the Observatory, so we booked it.

The cottages are south of the quaint little town of Port Rowan along the road which goes down to the Long Point provincial park. There are six cottages of varying sizes located around an central building. The cottages are not really what I would call a cottage as they are prefabricated, not the rural idyllic buildings we might expect in the UK. But they are OK, there is an allocated parking space next to each cottage but not much by way of grounds though there is an inlet/jetty from the lake right behind.

Our cottage for 4 was snug, nicely fitted out with all new furniture, kitchen, cooker, fridge, crockery, utensils, flat screen tv, dining table etc. Space is effectively utilised, but the bedrooms only really have room for the beds and little else, so felt a bit claustrophobic (they must use a very wide angle camera for the shots on the website!). But it was OK, compact, functional and convenient for where we wanted to be.

The cottages are self-catering with Port Rowan providing shops if you want to make your own food. We ate out in the evening at the very pleasant Boat House Restaurant which is set near Lake Ontario on the edge of Port Rowan. Nice homely food, good friendly service, seemed popular with the locals.

And a visit to the Long Point Bird Observatory is a must for anyone interested in birds. The staff there were very welcoming and our 6 year old son really enjoyed watching the warblers etc being banded and released. It was great to see the birds at such close quarters. We were there after the main peak of migration but still enjoyed it.

The beaches around Long Point are really nice too, very sandy, and we enjoyed playing there. Port Rowan offers nice shops and cafes, and an amazing ice-cream parlour with about 50 ice-cream flavours.

We enjoyed our brief stay, great for birdwatchers like us, but also lots to do for anyone who likes to go somewhere a bit off the beaten track.
