“Great atmosphere and marvelous fondue!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 February 2013

This family-run property has a great atmosphere and the owner is very kind. It's a 45 minutes drive away from Davos, through a scenic road. The restaurant (that is open for the public) is very cozy, well decorated and definetly worth a visit. I had probably the best cheese fondue ever, harmonized with a local white wine. The owner is the cook and his wife and daughter wait tables. Every detail is taken care of, in a mountain style inn. I would love to come back on vacations!

I had a very nice three night stay at Hotel Schontal. Our room was average size for Switzerland and came with a balcony that provided a fantastic view. The bed was very comfortable and housekeeping was good. Wifi was free, fast and very reliable. The hotel was conveniently located next to a Coop grocery store. There was also a hotel restaurant (closed Wednesday and Thursday) , but I did not eat lunch or dinner there. Breakfast was filling but basic (various breads, cereal, yogurt, fruit) . The best aspect of the hotel was the friendliness of the owners. Although there was occasionally a little difficulty communicating in English, they made a strong effort to be helpful, which I appreciated. They also provided train vouchers for free trips to/from Davos and for the Davos shuttle.

One negative factor was the lack of train service late at night (last train ~8pm), but this applies to all hotels in Filisur. Additionally, the hotel was located below the hill from the railway station. While it's not far (5-10 minute walk taking the shortcut), the path got very icy in the mornings and was challenging with luggage.

Overall, the positives definitely outweigh the few minor negative points.

Great fun. This busy hotel has rooms named after fairy tale characters and the menus are wrapped round rolling pins. Lifts the spirit. Rooms spotless, of course (we're in Switzerland here) and the restaurant first class both for dinner and breakfast. Nice people, too.

The parking outside is very convenient and the hotel is close to the centre of the quaint village. The station is, indeed, quite a long vertical distance away but the climb is good for you. As the hotel gave away free return tickets to Davos we did that. Well worth it, though Davos didn't impress us as much as the journey there and back.

Room Tip: Despite the road outside this is a quiet hotel - at least in January - so I don't suppose it mat...

I spent 3 nights at this hotel - It was an off season, not many people around. The location of the hotel is fantastic - right below a hill top; yes, it is a bit of steep climb down hill but this is Switzerland! On the day I arrived the Sun was out shining, you could easily see the snow capped mountains and the view from the room balcony was absolutely fantastic. The rooms were clean and were cleaned every day. The restaurant is a delight, the decor, ambience and the views are simply gorgeous. Breakfast was basic, though I would have loved to have some local delights. I had dinner one night - the service and the food was good. The staff are not particularly comfortable with English but it didn't seem a problem to me.

Firstly, the previous reviews on this hotel seem a bit biased. I think this is one of THE most quaint and romantic hotel you can find and that that price and personal attention...its a great offer. It is like living in a swiss chalet but with comforts of a hotel.

Location : The hotel is located in the valley...and it is literally in the Valley of the small tiny town of filisur on the path of the Glacier express. It is a steep downhill walk from the train station but...believe me even this walk is a pleasure if you have the right mindset. Some might think the climb uphill back to the trainstation is a pain...but there are ways to get past that( hire a taxi or climb up from the longer but less steeper road)...we were lucky that the owner offered to drop us to the train station.
Apart from this tiny flaw the setting of this hotel is nothin less than PERFECT ! It has a wonderful view of the small tunnel opening in the hills where you can actually see the trademark red swiss trains and glacier express climb up the mountains...and on the other side is the beautiful-lake( schoen -tal)from which the hotel derives its name...and rightly so.It is perfectly located and really not very far from the train station. In one word...the location is picturesque !

Hotel and rooms : The hotel is very cozy and a typical swiss inn/ B&B ...it is family run and that is really a huge plus....the owners ...ERICA AND MARKUS are very friendly and invest personal attention in everything from the guests to the everyday nooks and corners of the hotel. It is well maintained and is in typical swiss mountain decor with lots of wood and natural light. The rooms are spacious and comfy . They are warm and also have a small balcony( most of the rooms) overlooking the valley. Do not expect 3 star service but the hotel has everything that you need and even wi-fi ...in the middle of the swiss mountains...i was surprised at the reach of technology...but credit to the owners for providing this service to the customers.
There is a swiss grocery store chain(COOP) right at the door of the hotel which is good for buying knick-nacks and munchies for your hikes. It has a nice breakfast room with open terrace overlooking the valley...which also doubles as a restaurant...very nice setting indeed.

Breakfast : The breakfast is nothing grand or special..but the quality of the ingredients makes it special...the taste of milk and bread is also different...i guess this is because its so pure and natural...without any processing.... it is really very evident.

Service : The special attention of the owners deserves a mention from the email replies at booking to the directions from the train station. As mentioned earlier...they even helped us by driving us to the train station in their own car.

In conclusion : this hotel is just very quintessential swiss and i would stay here again and again even if i am made to climb up the steep hill everyday....Family-like, beautiful and very romantic !

Room Tip: Ask for rooms with a view of the lake or the mountains ...avoid rooms facing the road

We decided to stay in Filisur on a recomendation to stay at the station hotel, however this was fully booked up the two months before so we stay at this place in Filisur.
However what we didn't realise is that the hotel is in the centre of the small village down a EXTREMELY steep hill. This tested us particually on catching the train next morning to the hotel.
However that said the hotel was very pleasant, the staff don't speak tha t good engish, but then again it was better than my [Swiss] German and they were welcoming enough. the room was pleasant with a balcony vuew towards the station.
On enote of caution, this is a tiny village with no real facilities (and certainly nothing in the evenings) except the handful of hotels) after eating at the railway hotel (hotel Grischuna) we returned to our hotel around 21.15 hours in the hope of getting a drink. We did get to have a drink, served in the restaurant, but when we asked for a second although we did eventually get it this was after a fuss and we were soon under the impression we shouldn't still be there so went to finish our drinks in the room.
The hotel appeared to have bar, but not in operation (In August!)
I would just add that in 5 mights in Switzerland this was our most expensive stay, and ina small village felt a little let down.

M.Pfister

We stayed in Filisur overnight to catch the Glacier Express the next day. It was a pleasant surprise. First, we had a delicious fondue lunch at Hotel Grischuna (by the rail station) wIth very friendly service. We then walked down a steep hill to Hotel Schontal. It had a pretty setting with mountains and farms around it. Also, the town of Filisur is very nice and typically Swiss. The hiking trails in the area were plentiful and beautiful. When we arrived to check in, there was nobody in sight. We had to look around and finally found someone in the restaurant who found our reservation and took us to our room. The room was clean and adequate, with a nice deck and view.

The hotel has a huge terrace out back for dinner and drinks and had accordian players entertaining a festive crowd. However, at least 90 percent of them were smoking and we couldn't sit anywhere without choking. We ended up dining across the street at the Hotel Ratia with it's cute outdoor vine covered terrace and garden restaurant. Quiet and very good.

In the morning, we had breakfast in a very small room and tried to check out for almost a half hour. My husband tried twice to get someone from the restaurant to help, but they didn't understand. A German speaker came to my husband's aid and translated, finally. The girl told him that everything was fine, nothing to sign and we went back to train station, where a lady asked if we were the couple from hotel, that we "forgot" to pay! She was nice, and let us pay the bill from the station. We never did meet an owner at the hotel and never did see the desk staffed. Even with a translator, the person who checked us out had no idea what she was doing. Be aware of this if you're an English speaker. I don't have complaints about our room, but the service was very bad.Filisur is a fine place to take the train, but I'd stay at another hotel based on my experience here.!
