“A surprising place to stay”

We were a party of four Italian ladies visiting Cornwall and Devon by car. At the time of booking we didn't know how was really this accomodation: the very kind owners should be very proud of their home. We found Cranham House the loveliest, the highlight of our trip. We all love very much remote places and this beautiful home reflects our needs. A hidden charming home at the far end of a single track road in the moor. Perfect. Dinner was a gorgeous experience. Wonderful rooms nicely and elegantly furnished, one with view along the valley to the sea and an island. In the morning we had 30mins walk to the lonely and rocky Welcombe Mouth beach (well-known by adventurous surfers): a dramatic and exclusive view over the Atlantic. Obviously, this B&B is not suitable for lovers of crowded places!!! For we all was the best.

We spent a lovely two nights at the B&B in July 2011, arriving at 1am straight from our wedding reception. Alan was there to meet us with a cheery smile, and that set the mood for our entire stay. Breakfasts were delicious -- superbly prepared by the lovely Jennifer. Certainly a nicer couple you unlikely to meet! This B&B is more like a home. Allowed to wander through the open living rooms and dining room, there is so much to see and wonder at, with tastful art scattered about the place. The rooms are numberless and so cosy inside. We stayed in a room with a unique window above the bed-board, and could also just about see the sea from our large window. Perfect! During the day, we went walking alongside North Devon's rugged but beautiful coastline, which is just a short 10 minute walk away. We also tried out a couple of old pubs suggested by out hosts. This is the perfect getaway and was an amazing start to our honeymoon. We headed to Italy from here, where Alan and Jennifer emailed within days to say we'd left our mobile phone at the B&B. Without hesitation they posted it to our UK address -- what a kind act! We will certainly be going back for our anniversary!

Alan and Jennifer were so welcoming, and as first time B&B'ers we were made to feel at ease instantly. The whole house is artistically decorated, with locally sourced furniture and artworks throughout. Our room had a sea view, was very comfortable and clean, which after a scamper in the country side was just what we needed.
The beach was about a 20 minute walk down the road, and even on a hot day, was deserted apart from a few local surfers and families. The local pub is also easy to reach if you don't mind a bit of a ramble up the hills, but our first pint of cider made it worth the walk!
Our best bit was the breakfast... as we were the only ones staying in the house at the time, we had the whole dinning room to ourselves, and were treated to a variety of cereals, home made bread, home made jams, and best of all the cooked breakfast with the tastiest bacon I've ever had (so much so, we went via the farmers market to bring some back with us!)

All in all, I'd recommend to anyone who wants to get away from it all, and enjoys the countryside, very lovely stay.

Cranham House is an old stone farmhouse, located in a wooded valley within a short walk of the beach at Welcombe Mouth.
The decor is homely and stylish, with a cosy sitting room for guests. From our well appointed en-suite double room, we had amazing views of the sea.
The wonderful owners Alan and Jennifer always made sure everything was perfect during our visit.
Foodies will be in heaven. Outstanding breakfasts and evening meals with local organic produce - excellent value for the quality.
A superb location for walkers and nature lovers. We did not move the car for days, as the coastal path is only a short walk from the house through the woods.
Good choice for lunch is nearby Docton Mill Gardens (slight detour from the coastal path).
For those who prefer self catering, Alan and Jennifer have just renovated a delightful one bedroom cottage next door.
