“Best Little Corn House in Costa Rica!”

Discovered this little corn house on a trip to Tenorio back in February when staying in Ocotal for a couple of months. Became a weekly trip (1 hr 20 min drive) Absolutely fabulous simple Costa Rican food! I think we've tried everything on the menu, we always order way too much! No worries, everything tastes great the next day! Just a magical little place half way up a volcano - what more could you ask for. Food is amazing, owners/staff are wonderful, views are precious. We'll be back for our weekly fix in about 5 days... Tamales - best I've ever eaten (ask for the lizano to put on top) chorreadas ask for salty with sour cream! Add a side order of plantain to the chorreadas and you're in heaven!

We were staying at Tenorio Lodge nearby and came in for lunch one day, not sure what to expect. We were not disappointed, had some some great, tasty, no-nonsense real CR food. Best plantains we ate on our trip. The waitress was very patient while we tried to figure out what everything was (we actually preferred having to try and speak Spanish, part of the adventure of travel). We ended up getting four different dishes, all different, all tasty. It was so good we came back for a mid-afternoon coffee the next day, and they were able to point out a sloth in the tree opposite, our best look at one the whole trip. They also gave us a free plate of pejibaye (peach-palm fruit). Not expensive either. We wished we had come here for an early dinner the one night we chose to eat at Tenorio Lodge instead of going out.

It doesn't look like much from the outside, but don't let that put you off.

This had the best food in Bijagua. The ladies here was very talented at making dinner just right. They don't speak much English at all - but even WE were able to muddle our way through it. EXCELLENT!

Casita de Maiz is a small, no-frills restaurant a few miles from Volcan Tenorio National Park. Corn is the staple here, as you might guess from the name of the restaurant. Their tamales are good, and the chorreadas are even better! Everything is very cheap, so you get excellent value for your money.

The place is run by a couple of local women, who greeted us warmly when we walked in. Overall, it felt as though we were eating at the home of a friend and not in a restaurant.

I highly recommend checking this place out if you are in Bijagua.

La Casita del Maiz is a simple little place a short distance west of the main part of Bijagua. It was very close to Sueno Celeste B&B where we were staying. All of the food items are made with corn, which from our experience in 3 trips to Costa Rica, is not real common. The food was delicious, the service, while in Spanish only, was excellent, and we worked through the menu finding what we wanted to eat. This restaurant is clean and you can watch as they prepare the food. They were patient with us as we arrived only about a half hour before closing, and they did not rush us.
