“Hotel Il Gabbiano”
Reviewed 27 June 2013

This hotel is approximately a 35 minute drive from Naples Airport and therefore a good base to explore Naples (by train) and the surrounding areas of Baia, Pozzuoli, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius and Amalfi Coast (by car).

We had done our research and were aware that the hotel is up a steep hill and not within walking distance of the local town, Baia, so a car is essential in our opinion. Driving in Italy is not for the faint hearted so do not stay here if you are not a very confident driver!! Parking is free and even when the hotel was busy the car park attendant always found us a space.

The hotel itself is lovely and appears to have been recently renovated and decorated to a high standard. Our room was spacious with a double bed and large, en-suite shower room. There was a mini bar stocked with water, beer and soft drinks and the bathroom was stocked with toiletries including shaving and dental kits. The maid visited everyday and it was kept spotlessly clean. All rooms have balconies with fabulous views over the bay and Mount Vesuvius! The roof top terrace is also newly done with jacuzzi, sauna and sun loungers and even better views! A continental breakfast was included in the price and was served from 07.30 - 10.00. The hotel offers a free shuttle bus service which we used in the evenings to eat at the pizzerias on the harbour front, and also to get to Lucrino Station to catch the train to Naples.

Every member of staff we came across was friendly and attentive, from the car park attendant and cleaning lady, to the mini bus drivers, waiters and receptionists. Melita on the front desk was particularly helpful when it came to planning our daily excursions and was always quick to sort out any problems, not that we had many.

Hotel Il Gabbiano caters for large wedding parties and business was obviously booming during our seven night stay in June. There was at least one reception, sometimes two, every afternoon and evening. Noise was never much of a problem, the rooms are quite well sound proofed, and the functions never went on too late, apart from one night when they were letting fireworks off at 1pm! The downside for us was that we felt unable to make full use of the hotels lovely facilities and we permanently felt out of place in our shorts and t-shirts when surrounded by crowds of people in their wedding finery! This is only a minor complaint as we enjoyed many an evening on our balcony and on the roof top terrace, which we usually had to ourselves. One suggestion for the hotel managers if the read this - please provide toilets and bar/eating facilities on the roof top terrace for non wedding guests, I think this would prove very popular!! (I would much rather have stayed on the roof in my shorts/costume and watch the sun go down over Mount Vesuvius and Naples with a drink in my hand and something to eat, rather than have to get dressed up or trek into town for supper, or run down two flights of stairs every time I needed the loo!)

All in all, I would definitely recommend this hotel and would stay here again on future visits (and if I hear of anyone getting married I will send them your way as it is a fabulous venue for a reception)! :)

Room Tip: All rooms have balconies with stunning views!

After seeing other comments below we were slightly concerned, however the stay was truly magnificent. The hotel staff were very friendly and the views were stunning. The jacuzzi on the roof terrace provided an excellent place to relax with panoramic views of Bacoli. I would not recommend travelling here without a rental car otherwise it could be difficult. The room was clean and done up to a good standard, including a new bathroom and large balcony overlooking the bay. We were also impressed with the restuarant, the food was amazing and very reasonably priced.

This is a wedding/events venue with a lovely view. It is NOT a tourist hotel. It is on an isolated road elevated far above Baia. We are tourists, and came to see the sights in Baia. The hotel has no map of the local area, there are no transportation options, not even taxis. We arrived in a taxi from Pozzuoli while a wedding was going on. The taxi had to let us out about 200 meters from the entrance. We were an inconvenience to the hotel. The staff was almost hostile. They would not serve us lunch, their 'restaurant' was closed for the evening. We were STRANDED at this place with no means to get anywhere else. Although we had booked for two nights, we left the next morning. They charged us for the second day. Even if we had a car, the crowded wedding would have prohibited our using it. The hotel has a shuttle to the nearest train station - that's all. I am writing Booking.com to ask for a refund.

Room Tip: Unless you are attending a wedding or a meeting at this hotel, stay away completely.

We are very sorry failing to leave you a good memory of your stay with us.

Hotel Il Gabbiano is located on the cape overlooking Baia and Lucrino, from where you can enjoy a marvelous view of the Gulf of Pozzuoli. Hotel is at few minutes driving from Baia or Lucrino, were any of several restaurants are situated, and ten minutes driving from the center of Pozzuoli.
Our reception persons are always available to call a taxi for our guests, our free transportation to the Lucrino train station is available on request at any time.

We are aware that arriving at the hotel at the same time of a wedding party can be chaotic, and we do all our best to avoid any inconvenience to hotel guest. We apologize for not be able to do in that case, we assure all our efforts to avoid this happens again in the future.

Our Restaurant “Il Gabbiano”, is open daily except on Tuesday Lunch Time, and Sunday evening, in that moments, the hotel offer a room service menu with cold dishes.

We wish to thank you for your review, that will help us in our steady improvement of our service

I've been there a couple of nights for a wedding and I've to say that the view on the bay is spectacular. The room was clean, it had a big window and the bathroom was wide and clean. Breakfast was average. The main problem was the position: the hotel is far away from the first train/bus stop (20 minutes walk on a busy road) and my suggestion is to avoid this place if you are travelling with public transport. And definitely don't go there if your plans are visiting Naples: it takes about 45 minutes by train and you are not able to know in advance the timetables, there's a sort of anarchy also in that....

My daughter recently went to Italy and other areas of Europe with her school. She forgot an item at the hotel and was too shy to ask about it. I emailed the hotel when she returned home and had a very prompt reply from Eva, who was wonderful. The item made it home within two weeks! I would recommend this hotel because of the caring staff!

We loved our stay here. It was a spectacular view from room 207. the staff was very helpful and friendly, especially Miguel. a peaceful trip at this hotel. don't expect to walk anywhere. too far and the streets are narrow without sidewalks. there was shuttle service though to the train station and Baia. I would stay here again.

Room Tip: room 207 was spectacular.

Manage your expectations here. The quality of the restaurant and the quality of the hotel are complete opposites. The restaurant was absolutely lovely, price, view, ambiance and staff..excellent.. I highly reccommend. The quality of the rooms are not to be desired. The website pictures are very misleading. The quality of the beds, bathrooms and walls were minimally tolerable. Additionally, we did not have hot water for the first few hours when we arrived. Then with toilet issues and the shower not draining, then no interenet service.. the signal was too weak. I would not stay at the hotel again..but would revisit the retaurant. Because the morning breakfast is served in the restaurant - we have no complaints there. If it were not for the restaurant..I would have given a lower rating.
