“Enchanting views and garden on slopes of Tuscan hilltop town”

The house has the most breathtaking views and is situated in a fantastic hillside position. This more than makes up for the slighlty basic equipment in the kitchen area. Overall it is a wonderful holiday home.

The garden is stunning: well maintained, colourful flowers, plenty of space and sunshine but also lots of shady spots. There are lovely olive trees to sit under in the dappled sunshine. The shady outdoor seating area is lovely for breakfast. The garden goes round the entire house, and seems to merge seemlessly with teh surrounding olive groves, so it feels like you have the entire hilsside to yourself and you're not overlooked by anyone. The pool is beautifully situated, although in April it was not yet in use. You can meander silently through olive groves, vineyards and little farm lanes. There is no through-road so you feel completely independent and private.

The views from the garden are truly magical. Meandering Tuscan lanes. Cyprus trees. Casole D'Elsa and San Gimignano hilltop towns on the horizon. You can watch the local farms in action as the animals are herded around. The rolling hills change by the hour as the light catches the hills at different angles. It is a full 180 degree view and you can stare at it for hours. Then, behind you up the hill, is the hilltop town of Radicondoli with its typical Tuscan architecture and the sound of church bells.

The house is comfortable and pretty spatious. Three good sized bedrooms. Each has direct access onto the lovely gardens. As with all old Tuscan buildings, the walls are thick and the windows are not huge, so it keeps the house cool but is not hugely bright. The rooms have character - terracotta tiles and wooden beams and a few items of nice wooden furniture. The two shower rooms (no bath) are both fairly small but certainly more than adequate. There are a few steps up and down between the various rooms, so not suitable for anyone with mobility difficulties.

The kitchen and living room area is fairly large with a nice arched glass doorway which brightens it up at certain times of the day. It's a pleasant place to be but there is no direct view from in here (the view faces the other way) so i tended to want to be outside to enjoy the immense view. The TV is very small and the sofas fairly basic. The central lighting is pretty harsh and cold; i would have preferred a few softer side lights. The kitchen units are a little old and, whilst they do the job, could potentially be updated. For example, there aren't quite enough power sockets so you may have to replace a plug if you want to use the microwave rather than the toaster. Not a major problem. The crockery, cutlery, pots and pans etc are ok but they're pretty basic and perhaps not quite enough of them. There are a few missing things, so i think this aspct could be improved pretty easily with a small expenditure.

The location is fantastic. Radicondoli - which is in none of the guidebooks - is a great local town. Churches with ringing bells, squares with locals relaxing, cobbled streets and steep lanes, stunning views from every angle, not a single ugly building, not a single other tourist. It feels like a real Tuscan hilltop village. A few nice restaurants. La Pergola pizzeria has the most magical outdoor terrace under a vine with stunning views. All of this is a very relaxing 400m walk up a fairly steep track. It gets the heart pumping (or you can drive) but is beautiful the entire way up. For us, it was the absolute perfect combination of being remote, private, and having enough space to ourselves in the garden and with the fantastic views etc, but also having a beautiful town just a short stroll away for dinners, basic food supplies, and general exploration.

We didn't do as much exploring as we would have liked, as we had two new babies with us, but the local driving is utterly beautiful to the nearby sights. Sienna, Volterra and San Gimignano are all within 30-40 minutes (stunning) drive. Poggibonsi is also relatively close for the larger supermarkets etc.

The host - with limited English - is smiley and accommodating. We arrived very late in the evening and he was there to welcome us with a bottle of home made wine each. He stayed overnight that night and at teh end of our week, adn he arrived once during the daytime to water the garden. But he very much left us to our own devices so we essentially had the entire place to ourselves for the week. Given that we therefore had a detached house, with a pool, and an entire large garden all to ourselves, it's terrific value at the time of year we went (April).

The drive from Pisa airport took around 1 hour 45. It's a fairly easy drive along the FI-PI-LI motorway and then a series of smaller roads through Cortona etc. Beware of relying on sat nav as it takes you along very small roads through the hills.

I would completely recommend this accommodation for a beautiful, quintessentially Tuscan house amongst perfect Italian countryside and with stunning views and right next to a classic Tuscan hilltop town. If you like being outside and enjoying the views, this place is wonderful. The inside of the house is absolutely fine, but is reasonably basic and you won't get a sense of your surroundings when you're inside, so it's not quite so special.

“Fantastic Villa in the most beuatiful spot in Tuscany”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 November 2012 for a stay in September 2012

The villa is located among wineyards and olivetrees with an outstanding view over the soft hills of Tuscany. The little town of Radicondoli is 400 meters away with shops and restaurants to cover the basic needs. The Villa itself is very charming with all the facilities you need for a family. Very nice swimming pool. One highligt is also the supplementary wooden fired oven where we made the most fantastic Pizzas. We met the owners several times, they came to check that everything was ok. They helped us with any issue we had in the most charming way.

“The Best! Sorry for the long review but there is so much good to say!”

We booked to stay at Villa Virgilius back in January 2012. My husband and I always spend our June holiday / wedding anniversary in Italy, this time back in Tuscany and our friends came with us so we were a group of 4. The villa would be suitable for 6, adults or families, all rooms are spacious.

The driving instructions given by the management company were spot on, no need for Sat Nav. We approached the villa and were immediately stunned by the open views over the country side. Mr and Mrs Virgilius welcomed us so heartfelt, we were given a bottle of cold water to refresh whilst the check- in details were completed. Mr Virgilius explained everything to us, not a word of English but it wasn't necessary. Everything is easy and straight forward in the villa, even the washing machine has some instructions on it. As I speak some Spanish and a few words of Italian we got by brilliantly but anybody would be able to. We were given a bottle of red wine which he grows on his own vines, how fantastic! He showed us his wine making machinery and samples were handed around. The owners stay over on Friday nights for when people depart / arrive on the Saturday morning where they occupy the right of the house. We saw them again once more when they watered the well maintained garden and not only helped us to light the BBQ but also presented another delicious bottle of wine which we enjoyed so much.

A few bits had been left for us, by previous guests and / or the owners such as tea bags, coffee, salt, pepper, oil, vinegar, washing up liquid, hand wash and some dishwasher tabs, we replaced what we used of course. We had self catered many times and often all basics have to be bought upon arrival, so it was great not to have to think of all these little things when we shopped up the road for the first days.

Only thing, pack insect spray! We had body sprays for the evenings as well as Don't Bite Me patches, occasionally I sprayed the bedrooms with stuff from the supermarket, don't forget you are in the country side with water nearby. Not a pest in any way but there are some biters about, if you react like my husband with some degree of allergy then pack antihistamines and creams.

Two local grocery stores are just up the road which got us by over the weekend perfectly, the village car park is just 20 meters or so behind the shops. A slightly larger supermarket with parking right outside is in Casole D'Elsa where we stocked up on water, bottles of wine and soft drinks etc on the Monday, this is only about 10 minutes drive away. Opening times are usually 9 am-1 pm and then 4 pm to 7 pm.

The villa itself is amazing, the kitchen / dining is sufficient, everything available - even a dishwasher! The bedrooms are towards the back which is fab if you travel in a group and fancy an early quiet night whilst everybody sits and chats. There are two doubles at the back which share one shower room; both have doors towards the garden and lovely views. A twin towards the side with a shower room next to it could be pushed together as another double easily - in fact if we are lucky enough to stay there again we'd pick that one, it also opens double doors out to the side of the house but is the most spacious has a larger window than the other room to make it slightly brighter – not that the other rooms are dark of course! Just a few notes, it doesn’t advertise it has aircon and we definitely didn’t need it, keep the large shutters closed in the day and the massive stone walls keep it cool. I am not sure what July/August would hold but having grown up in a hot country I would have thought you’d be absolutely fine without. And yes there is a hairdryer, an iron and ironing board, anybody wanting to travel light (Ryanair with hand luggage only) could do so.
The laundry room is at the back of the house, accessed from the outside and the washing line is opposite that door.

Other than the inside dining table for 6 there is also a table right outside and a lovely pergola table next to the brick BBQ. There is plenty of parking also of course, shaded all day for two to 3 cars under the massive walnut tree but much more if needed.
The pool is fantastic! Not heated but we certainly did not need that in June! The views are magnificent, the quiet surroundings astounding! We had brought our Ipod with speakers and had quite a number of chilled out days sipping vino there. There are plenty of chairs available in the little pool-shed adjacent to the house but the grass is so lush that we often just sat there on towels. The WiFi is one of the best we ever experienced, best in the kitchen or the front and pool area as the stone walls are very solid towards the back bedrooms. That certainly saved us a fortune as we had to do the odd bit of work related e-mails.

The walk to the village is up a gravel hill, the same you’d drive down to the house, for us it wasn’t a problem, some of us slightly fitter than others (late 20’s to late 30’s age wise) in the heat but we managed very well. We had 3 restaurants on our list but due to our location the closest were La Pergola and Il Nazionale, both absolutely fantastic! We had dinner twice in each and I’d struggle to pick a favourite! Both offer the most fabulous pizza, homemade pasta and steaks. Both are in the same area as the supermarkets, so we know that they are open in the daytime and offer lunches. I am not sure if La Pergola does breakfast but by the looks of it Il Nazionale does. One tip for the ladies is not to worry about your high heels, the walk up the hill would not be good, it is not needed either fashion wise or concerning the practicality, I did get by on my flip flops and funky flats all week – maybe this could save some luggage weight.

We did a couple of trips out and about, needless to say as you would see from the maps there are lots of towns in the area worthwhile visiting such as Sienna, Volterra and our favourite San Gimignano where the market day is on Thursdays.

On our departure the owners where there to check us out so to say and return our security deposit, a cleaning team was waiting, presumably family. We thanked them again and gave them a little thank you gift. They were so lovely and gave us a hug!

Mr and Mrs Virgilius, thank you both so much for opening your home to allow people like us to have such an amazing holiday! More than that even, to have the opportunity to experience Tuscany properly and meet amazingly kind people like
