Gikas Apartments

The apartments are simply decorated and clean, just what you expect from a Greek apartment. The family are very hospitable, and often left us samples of Greek food in our room, which was lovely. We travelled with our young children and the family were very considerate of our needs right from the first booking.
The location of the hotel is near the port town but not so near that it was noisy (there was a little traffic noise at 7pm when the cars were redirected from the sea front which is closed at night to allow people to enjoy the restaurants at the sea front, but only for a short time).
We stayed in the 1 roomed apartment for the first night as we were advised at booking a 2 roomed apartment was not available until the night after we wanted it, had we wanted to save costs the family were happy for us to have the smaller room and we could all fit into it but we were glad of the extra space. Both rooms had a 2 ringed electric hob and very basic cooking equipment and the larger room had a microwave. Both rooms had a nice balcony overlooking the garden (the sea view rooms are at the top and not so easy with children and I was glad of the advice).
We really enjoyed our trip to Marmari and we plan to visit here again, we have been twice now and plan to stay at these apartments again next time. Marmari was a great place to stay with young children as all the beaches we visited were shallow and child friendly. Renting a car was invaluable.

Room Tip: Tell the family your needs, they will help you. They were very quick to reply to e-mails.

Good, clean, comfortable apartments in a convenient location and at a reasonable price. But, most importantly, the family who run this hotel are so helpful and generous. This is what Greek hospitality was like before Greece was "Europeanised".

I am an experienced traveller in Greece, but I must say that my stay at Gikas ranks high on my list of places I would return to. Welcoming, helpful and warm hearted hosts. One day we would be offered fruit, another homemade cheesecake, stuffed peppers or bean soup. The rooms are spacious and light with a good sized balcony. If you want to rent a car the apartment owner will arrange this for you from an agency in Karystos - there is no car hire agent in Marmari. Take advice from the owner which beach to visit, depending on wind direction.
It's useful to be able to speak some Greek, but communication is no problem. We were in Marmari for 3 weeks from mid September 2012. Super time of year though there had been no rain and everything was still very dry. There are many eating places in Marmari and fresh fish always available. I can specially recommend the sardines and whitebait!

Enjoy Marmari and Gikas apartments. Richard Clark, Norway

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the sea, Gorgeous sunsets.

This place is run by a warm and helpful family. They really make you feel at home and relax. The apartment was big and with a lovely balcony overlooking the court yard. Restaurants and the village is just a short walk away and beaches are within walking distance as well. Everybody in the village seem laid back and friendly. I strongly recommend this place!

Excellent value and the owners are very nice. The room is a good size and equipped to a reasonable standard. Not luxurious but reasonable. The area is pretty but quiet. We went in May which was too early as most tavernas were still closed. I was told that it's better to go in June onwards. The best nearby beach is about 1km north of the town. Park near some posh houses and walk about 50m thru a small wooded area.

We visited Gikas apartments in June 2011. Everything was as it should be.

Pleasant and quiet location, still very near to the coastline for a nice walk in the evening and a good enough beach is within walking distance.

Clean and spacious room and bathroom. A/C and TV are obvious to be included, but the room was also equipped with a fridge, hot plates plus glasses, plates etc., everything you need to cook your own meal, or maybe warm up milk for an infant.

Polite staff, very eager to help us find our way in Evia and not miss any sights we shouldn't miss.

Breakfast served in a nice environment (the front yard), in the right quality and quantity.

The price was really good, too. The whole experience was definitely worth the price we paid for and Gikas appartments could very well be our choice again when we come back to South Evia.

Regarding the area, Marmari is a great place to relax and you will have a great time there. However, to fully enjoy your stay there you will need a car to visit nearby areas and explore more of South Evia. An SUV is recommended, as the roads are definitely not the best. Good place to be used as a base, though.

May 2008: This appartment is simple and clean, the area relaxing and the view splendid. It can be a bit cool at night in this season; the heating is a good thing! Marmari and the neighbour village Karystos are small, but beautiful. Some knowledge of the Greek language is of advantage when getting in contact with the locals. Impressing beach in Marmari - a paradise for painters....Capital Chalkida is gorgeous!
Mr. Elpidoforos is an uncomplicated, welcoming, friendly and helpful person. His sweet dog Emma is a lovely and peaceful pet - one is tempted to take her out for walks :-) If you want to spend relaxing holidays during a non-crowded season in a Greek village that has still remained Greek, this appartment can be more than advised.
