Having stayed in the resort last year at the Thomson hotel opposite we liked the look of El Greco so booked up. The location is great, direct beach access. Love the town and the peace and quiet. From the outset I have to say Thomson don't do this hotel (or any they use their own grading system for) any favours marketing as a 4 star. It's nice but it's just not got the little extras you get with a 4 star so our expectations weren't met from the start. I don't understand why hotels allow them to market like this as had we wanted a 3 star we would have booked one and from a customer service aspect it must encourage complaints.
Food was nice, really good choice and some nice salads and fresh fruit. Only downside was breakfast where there were very few healthy options, but still good. The restaurant was always packed. It is simply too small and being wedged in did spoil it a bit, felt we had to eat and run as people were all waiting for tables. Major plus side was the view from any window seat, gorgeous. The hotel staff in all areas were very friendly. The public areas of the hotel were clean and tidy.
Major downside was the pool area. We have never been somewhere with such an unwelcoming pool area. It was just green concrete and sun loungers wedged in. Such a shame as this could be rectified so easily with a few plants and decking or even artificial grass. First hotel we have been to without tables round the pool too. We went to the beach, which is just gorgeous and paid for beds there. Must point out that the waterpark is actually separate to the pool and hotel, you physically have to walk across a small section of beach between the two. Wasn't a problem for us but had we traveled with kids this would have been a real issue as you really need to decide which area you'd be at and stay put for the day. Again, so easily solved if lockers were provided at the waterpark area so you could lock bags away and move between pool, park and beach. Waterpark area was again bare but slides were great fun, good for juniors and teens - and grown ups! Does shut on Saturdays. Really horrible feature is the closing of the whole pool area to make way for evening entertainment. Have to leave by 1900 when police style tape is used to close certain areas off - looked like a crime scene! Not sure why a sign isn't used?!
Had a double room, easily the smallest we have ever had. But to be fair also the cleanest. Spotless, cleaned everyday. Very little noise at night. Good size balcony, but unlit. Major issues were no kettle or fridge and aircon unit was literally over the bed and whilst quiet just terribly positioned as blasted with air five feet away. Also very pricey safe hire. No complementary toiletries at all, not even a shower cap. The rooms whilst clean and nicely decorated were never a 4 Star and seriously struggling as a 3. Tip, take a kettle and extra hangers, we had 10 between us.
Entertainment wasn't our cup of tea, but very hard to please everyone. We went to a local Mexican bar and beach bar most nights on the smaller lighthouse beach, both cheap and nice atmosphere. Several other reviews have said about the huge amount of wasted space in the bar area inside. I agree. This could easily be better used by removing or moving the largely unused arcade games and we would probably have stayed there in the evenings had there been a few candles on the tables, background music for people not wanting the entertainment on the outside stage.
We did have a good week but probably wouldn't return, which is a real shame as with a very small amount of money spending on it for those nice little touches, kettles, plants, candles and such like we definitely would. Thomson grading is totally inconsistent as the 3 star plus hotel 100 yards away we stayed at last year had all the features we expected from the 4 star one this year, albeit terrible food! Can't win but definitely check what their grading actually means as we've stayed in 4 hotels and this is always an issue. Hopefully either this hotel will become a proper 4 star, offer a premier inclusive package or suites or a hotel will become available in Portinatx that is 4 star as we love the town and would happily have paid more for those little extras.
