“Relaxing family holiday in the Tuscan countryside”
Reviewed 29 May 2014

Podere il Poggiolo is the perfect location for enjoying Tuscany with a young family. We rented a one bedroom apartment with kitchenette for a week, and were provided with a cot and highchair for our baby. The apartment was rustic but comfortable, with a good shower. The kitchenette had a fridge, gas hob and sink, and we were provided with a kettle on request. The restaurant (where breakfast and dinner were served) and swimming pool were a few paces from our door, as was the home of the owners, Serena and Alessandro. The week we were staying, the owners were away for a few days, and with only a few other guests staying it felt like we had the place to ourselves...well, apart from the gang of animals that kept us company - a pig, a donkey, horses, dogs, and a baby wild boar! Our daughter loved all of the animals and they kept her amused throughout the week. Older children could have a ride on the small pony too.
Breakfast consisted of any array of delicious cakes and pastries - freshly baked each morning. Dinner was available either in the form of takeaway dishes brought to our apartment door (eg pasta, salad, meat/cheese platters) or a traditional 3 course tuscan dinner served in the restaurant. As mentioned above, the close proximity of the restaurant meant that we could put our daughter to bed and then bring the baby monitor to dinner. We were then treated to Alessandro's delicious cooking - homemade pasta, steaks and vegetables from the garden.
The location of the agriturismo is definitely in the middle of the countryside, which suited us as we didn't plan to do much sightseeing. If you did want to explore 5 minutes down the hill is the town of Rufina, from which you can get the train to Florence, which takes only half an hour. On another day, we drove to the beautiful hilltop town of Fiesole, approx 45 minutes drive. Rufina has all amenities, including a Coop supermarket. Further up the hill, the village of Acone has a decent restaurant.
All in all this was a wonderful location for enjoying the simple pleasures of tuscany, and we would love to return someday.

Spent 3 weeks in Tuscany, sleept in 7 hotels/agriturismo and This was by far the best place we stayed in. Serena and Alessandro really makes us feel like Family, totally relaxing experience with the best kitchen we tried in thoose 3 weeks. Many thanks again for everything, they also gave us a full bag or their bio vegetables when we left, the sweetest Family ever!!! Must try if you look for an authentic italian experience. Best view, best food, best hosts.

Замечательный вид, вкусная кухня и настоящее итальянское гостеприимство. Если вы хотите хорошо провести время, то Вам сюда.

This was my first trip to Italy and both my and my husband's first stay at an agritourismo. We only stayed a few days as part of our multi-city Italian adventure, but the experience we had was amazing. Alessandro and Serena were fantastic hosts who helped us out with a last-minute room after our previous booking with a different agritourismo fell through. We got lost for a bit in our travels from the Florence airport to the farm, and it was quite late when we arrived, but Alessandro and Serena were gracious and welcoming.

The rooms were clean and beautiful, and the spread at breakfast featured delicious, homemade goods that fueled us for our day's adventures. If you go, make use the the website's directions that will get you from the streets of Rufina to the farm tucked high in the hills. It's a daunting trek up a rocky, one-lane road, but the views are quite rewarding. If you want to take home some of the farm's organic olive oil or wine, make your request a few days in advance as everything is prepared by hand. We did not have an opportunity to take advantage of the dinner service, but if we are able to return, I definitely plan in partaking an authentic Tuscan meal.

We did not use the pool, but it looked very clean and well-kept. There are also hiking trails and a farm tour, but we skipped out on those in favor of visiting the museums and destinations of nearby Florence. Serena supplied us with a map and talked us through use of the train system.

This would be the perfect get-away for families, particularly for large groups looking for a quiet retreat.

Room Tip: The apartment where we stayed is connected to the communal space where breakfast is served, so it ca...

We rented a room with kitchenette for eleven days and it was fantastic.

The first experience was finding it. Google maps or the GPS gets close but goes farther down the road than it should. Somehow I overlooked the GPS coordinates on their website which you definitely should use. But with the help of some local people eventually we found it. It's about 3 KM up the hill on a very windy road, followed by turning off onto a dirt and partially paved drive up to the complex.

The room is very comfortable with a four burner cooktop, small refrigerator, and all of the plates and utensils that we could need. There's an air conditioning unit but we never needed it. The bed is very comfortable and the bathroom is fine.

Serena and her staff cook up a wonderful breakfast each day providing new freshly baked pastries and breads with fresh juices and, of course, the cappuccino machine. And then they offer cooked to order eggs with cheese and meats. Dinners are available and most nights we took advantage of this. It's a full four course Tuscan dinner, different every night. And most of the food comes from their farm, with some from other local farmers. And, BTW, you can have dinner either in the dining room with a wonderful view and the social experience of the other people around you, or you can order meal for your room.

It's a nice quiet location only about a half hour from Florence. We drove to the agriturismo, dropped off our bags, and took the train to Florence for our stay there and then came back and spent our time at the agriturismo. The train is convenient and easy to use. Much better than dealing with a car in Florence. We did a lot of day trips from here to places like Assisi, Pisa, and the Hill Towns. Most of those are 1.5 to 2 hours away so it did make for long days. In our case the 8:30 PM dinner time worked out well.

It's definitely a working farm with grapes/wine, olives/olive oil, chickens, geese, horses, a donkey, pig, etc. as well as other crops and animals. The just got another horse for guest usage.

Overall, great experience and I would definitely recommend this both to families with and without kids.

The best aspect of this Agriturismo farm is the hospitality and cooking of the hosts, Serena and Alessandro. We ended up enjoying three evening meals here, mainly because of the quality of their home-style fare, and also because this place is somewhat remote and the roads difficult to negotiate at night, so we were not eager to return after dark. The biggest drawback was the location, especially for us, an elderly couple, who did not enjoy night driving on poorly-lit and poorly sign-posted Italian roads. The character village of Rufina is accessed via a hairpin-bending road down the mountain. Breakfasts were replete with home-made cakes and biscuits, while eggs were always on offer. Although there is a nice size pool, it does not have a view of the valley, and since the weather was moderate, we only swam once during our week-long stay. The apartment was well-equipped with dishes, but it would have been awkward to cook in the tiny kitchenette, so we made no attempt to do so. Although the beds were comfortable, we would have enjoyed a few more luxury touches like more hooks and a shelf in the bathroom for toiletries, plus cakes of soap instead of a tiny sachet of liquid soap.. Our hosts were most accommodating in supplying a hairdrier, extra hangers and extra toilet paper when asked. They also helped us plan some escursions and helped with train schedules. An enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: Bring face cloths and an absorbent bath towel.

This is the perfect place to unwind in the midst of olive groves and vineyards under a gorgeous blue sky. The agriturismo is tucked up on a Tuscan hill but close enough to Rufina where the train station will take you to many places in the vicinity of Tuscany for day trips. The farm is very well run by a very hard working couple, Alessandros and Serena and their crew of friendly helpers. The food, if you choose to eat in, is squisito! You can also order take away to be eaten in your own rooms - which is reasonably priced and just as delicious. The rooms are clean, rustic, air-conditioned; there is hot water in the shower and TV...which i promised you wouldn't watch for there is so much to do. Yes, there is free wifi all over the place, so that was very helpful as i had to work on my laptop and serve the net daily. If you love animals, this place has donkeys, horses, dogs, a cat and even pigs. Guests bring their dogs and one can see they are also having a great time here. There is a beautiful swimming pool and trails for walking. Apartments come with your own little patio and places to hang your washing. It is paradise under the Tuscan sun. Grazie mille Serena and Alessandros.

Room Tip: My room, il ginestra has a good view and it is spacious.

The view is magnificent. You're on a mountain enjoying the scenery from within a pool. The room (we had Ginestra) is like a classic romantic movie scene. But what we enjoyed most of all was the food. We tasted the best food we ever had in Italy. 10/10 for this Paradise (@serena en allesandro, we'll be back!!)
