This place has definitely gone off. Food poor, staff casual and most definitely over priced - I recommend you go to the lions or les Halle for both quality and price.

The menu, though out of the hunting season at the time, showed mostly what would be available during that season. There was very little else. A tournedos which I ordered rare was completely overcooked. They tried to tell me that it would be less so in the middle. I had cheese for desert. The Camembert was hard and grainy in the centre. They tried to tell me that this was normal. I was obliged to say "ne me prends pas pour un con s'il vous plait". Their customer relations appeared to be shockingly bad .

We love the relaxed atmosphere. Gloriously light and chic decor. Try the oysters, they are excellent. Always a very warm welcome from Gabriel!. Great relaxing but fun atmosphere.

Our aim was to lunch at La Licorne which is sadly closed at midday. We called from Rouen at late time to book a table. The maitre d´hotel was polite and upbeat, he kindly reserved a table and arranged for us to lunch at the late time (for rural france) of 13.30-13.45h.

The menu at Le Grand Cerf is short, unpretentious and well executed. There is a fair amount to game in the menu, following on the theme of the name and the location of the restaurant. We shared a delicious terrine de campagne and followed to a cote de sanglier served with a delicious matelotte presented in a pretty red small pumpkin. Admittedly the dish is not technically demanding, but it was well executed and beautifully balanced with a light yet flavourful sauce that offset well the gamey boar flavour. The service is kind, lively and attentive without overbearing.

We found the decor is fun, cosy and up-to-date. Clean lines, without being cold and quirky details that nod and wink to the name and location. The garden outside looked wonderful for summer lunches and dinners.

The village of Lyons La Foret is charming and both the restaurant and the village make it worth a detour.

Had this not been the only restaurant open in town the night we were there we would have walked out. Why? Because the Maitre D was so exceptionally rude to the customers, and the other staff were only borderline polite, maybe following his example.
