Manicou River Resort was amazing – we stayed a week and loved our cottage and the island. The view from our cottage was spectacular! Every morning we’d awake to this breathtaking panorama over the bay and could hardly leave to explore the island.

Our cottage was like camping in a tree house only in comfort! The cottages, which they call hand-crafted, have all been built of this elegant wood, sourced right from the resort property – beautiful. One side of our cottage was completely open to the outside and being from NYC – this was special – sitting right in the middle of a lush green mountain looking out over the ocean and bay – WOW! (This ain’t Brooklyn!) We got to commune with nature. We loved the openness, freshness, ocean breezes and the feeling we were living outside however still with great amenities. A super bed / great mattress, a little kitchenette equipped with dishes, pots and pans, gas top stove, sink and a small refrigerator, and so we could make coffee and cook breakfast every morning and just sit and soak in the view to start each day. A great bathroom with solar heated shower – that was sometimes warm vs. hot, however, we never minded because it’s the tropics and warm was refreshing!

The 1st drive up their road to the cottages you’ll wonder ‘where they heck are we going’ – definitely need a 4-wheel drive’ and their driveway is a little steep, however after the 1st time up not a big deal. And the view is so amazing, it is so worth it!

Kate and Patrick, the owners have just installed internet and that’s available if you want it, or they’ll shut it off. They were great and gave us many tips about the island, places to eat, where to hike or snorkel, etc. Oh and we used the wireless internet and it was super!

Now if your taste is an air conditioned room, then this is not the place for you! However if you want a chance to experience nature on this wonderful nature island – then Manicou River is for you! And they actually have a little river than runs on their property that you can walk down to and just sit and listen to the river rush by surrounded by lush greens and mango trees and so many other tropical paradise plants. Can you tell we loved it and we will be back!

Room Tip: We heard that the highest room, has the best view; we were in the lowest cottage and view was amazin...

This is a magic place. We loved our cabin with a great view of the sea and the birds and the moon and stars at night. I slept like a baby. While we were there, wifi was installed so we could be connected if we wanted to be. The drive up through the property is like going through a botanical garden. The cabins are beautiful with all natural timber from the property, a fully equipped kitchen, fridge and a beautiful bathroom. A good place to escape the world and be in paradise for a while.

Room Tip: All cabins have wonderful views and are spaced out so you are not overlooked. Cabin 2 where we were...

My husband and I spent 4 nights here during a week long trip to Dominica in March. The drive up the hill can be intimidating but it's completely worth it! The view from your room is stunning at any time of day (my jaw actually dropped!), the people that own it are friendly and helpful, and the room itself is lovely and clean. We loved watching the stars and listening to the peaceful sounds of nature each night. I still miss waking up to that amazing view! If you're looking for a relaxing and romantic place to stay, I highly recommend Manicou. Despite the open air design, bugs were never a problem although we did get visits from the local birds each morning while we made breakfast. You're just a short distance from Portsmouth for either meals or the local market and the room is stocked with basic cooking needs (spices, etc) as well as a cooler. The rooms have running water and gas stoves....I didn't even miss having electricity (although I think they may have solar powered lights now). If you're vacationing in Dominica, you've come for the nature. Manicou lets you enjoy the beautiful landscape with the comforts of home. Can't wait to visit again!

Thanks so much for taking the time to write this lovely review. We do indeed now have solar power so a little bit of light (not too much) and a small fridge so you no longer have to use a cooler.

We do hope you will come back. We are currently running an offer for returning guests. Book 2 nights or more and get an extra night free. Book before end 2013 for any time up until end 2014.

Kind regards,

Kate and Patrick

We were one of the first guest after the take over by the new owners. They are very enthousiastic and sent us a good road description in advance. Be aware that there drive way is very steep so take a very low gear. The lodges are beautiful and the views magnificent. The new owners will improve the resort by installing 230 V on solar power and solar heaters (actualy the self constructed current ones can not work) so everybody will have hot water for showering. The owners are friendly and helpful while still starting up.

My boyfriend and I spent two nights at Manicou River Eco Resort in March. The slick website and great reviews were a deciding factor where we would spend our first leg of the trip, right off the plane. We waited until 3pm to make sure our cabin would be ready before we drove into the property (which had no sign or indicator if you are on the right track). A staff member led us to our clean and neat cabin and showed us around momentarily.
Apparently the owners did not have a hard copy of our payment and dates in the cabin, and were not expecting us. We were visited in the evening by a confused and slightly hostile owner as we had been put into the wrong cabin reserved for a family they WERE expecting. After an awkward moment or two we got to stay into the one we had been having dinner in, thankfully. Aside from not feeling like welcome guests we didn't let it make or break our day, and had some laughs.
We enjoyed our stay here a lot because we were vacationing together, had a great view over the ocean, and were so close to Cabrits Dive Centre. We even had a cute little tree frog visit us on our windowsill. We had prepared for the stay as though we were backpacking into a cabin, not a resort as this property is described. We brought all favorite fresh market foods for the day and ice and rum with us. Likewise, we had our own flashlights for night time walks down the path. Do not expect any additional service for the price, just admire the surroundings and make sure to stop into Poonkies for drinks and dinner out nearby. The waterbed was fine, we slept well. We had hot water for a shower and dishes.
With taxes and service charge included we noticed that the rates were higher than other great eco-lodgings on the island. This difference is why we are giving an "average" rating based on value. Other managers included breakfast items, welcoming and trained staff members, offered cell phones for island use...something for "added value". My advice to the owners would be to find a way to stay organized and communicate to staff so they know guest names, dates of arrival matched up with cabin names. A "Welcome to Manicou River Eco Resort" sheet in each cabin would help guests and you out with a bit of info about the cabins, the neighborhood and what it has to offer, info about where and how to finalize the bill and such. Perhaps a sign on the track welcoming guests. That way, everyone can get comfy and let that chill island vibe take over!

Room Tip: If you can afford it, stay in the large cabin with the wrap around terrace. (we did not) A little sl...

We are the new managers having taken over after your visit. Thanks for taking the time to write this review. Detailed reviews like this have helped us to plan which improvements to concentrate on since taking over the business. Staff-training has been just one of the many things we have been working hard for the past few months.

We sincerely hope you will return one day to experience our improvements.

Kind regards,

Kate and Patrick

A bit like the Eden Project in the UK, the Tree House and its environs have matured beautifully and the team there remembered us and made us feel really at home. It's a great experience and we look forward to returning in another couple of years. Try it.
