Picard Beach Cottages
Reviewed 9 August 2011

We stayed on Dominica for well over a week and stayed at three places. We upgraded from the Portsmouth Beach Hotel to the Picard Beach Cottages and we should have done this much sooner.

These are nice little cottages right along the beach, with a row of cottages behind those that have a direct view of the ocean. The cottages are nice with a nice living space, full kitchen, large bathroom, shower and separate bedroom. The air conditioner worked well and the place has glass windows that really help keep the humidity out.

All are single floor units and were excellent! Stay here, not the hotel! And each was lived in by a star or other person involved in the filming of the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean". The film producer lived in ours. Woo hoo!

We will stay here again!

When we left here and being stranded by American Airlines, we stayed at the Pagua Bay Cottages in Marigot.

Room Tip: Ask for a breach front cottage. A few dollars more than the ones behind, but they are all nice.

Stayed there for just one night. As another review noted - it is pricey. But if you're into the rustic, LOST (yup, the TV series) vibe, this is your place.

But it was a little too rustic for me. Highlight was the mouse that was dancing on my bathroom sink.

Staff are amazing though. Top class customer service from a boutique establishment.

I actually highly recommend it and would go back again. Think of LOST - cabin on the beach? But with all the mod cons. Paradise is here

Dear Mr. Joseph,

Firstly I should thank you for taking the time to place a review on the tripadvisor site. We are very glad to think that you would recommend it and return. In spite of this, it is very unfortunate that you had the negative incident.

We recognize that with our ethos of Being & Healing with Nature that dealing with the negative aspects of nature reflect a challenge. I must advise you though that there have been no other such complaints. We believe this is attributable to the second shift of housekeeping which allows our guests to have our room attendants do a pm cottage refresh enabling crumbs and foods which may have dropped to be cleared away without attracting unwanted overnight visitors from nature.

The incident is unfortunate and regrettable but we trust that with our committment to manage this problem, our future guests can be confident that their stay will have only the positives of yours.

On the 'rustic note', other guests would be happy to know that although we strive to keep it down-to-earth and natural, we have embarked on product development adding more comfort touches and furnishings, local ammenities and decorative details to update the accomodations. Our garden is in bloom and bearing all sorts of exotic fruits, like carambolas, mangoes, West Indian cherries, guavas, coconuts among others, and we continue to plant new and varied ones which is making it more like a 'Garden of Eden' than a 'Lost' world!

I hope that some time soon, you will be able to be with us again and witness the changes first-hand.

With much appreciation,
Carla Armour

I actually reserved a room at the Portsmouth Beach Hotel and was very pleasantly surprised when they put us in the adjacent cottages. It was during off-season and they said they are willing to offer the cottages at discounts to those who ask. The cottages were basic but clean and comfortable. We rented snorkels for a half day at a nearby dive shop and swam around the reef right in front of the hotel. The beach is black sand but the water is clear and nice. There is an IGA grocery store about a five minute walk away and there are frequent buses that pass by. If you take a bus from Roseau, ask the driver to drop you off at the hotel as it is located before you get into town.

I was here in August 2011 but under the title 'when did you stay..." it won't give me that option so I said June because despite all the bad reviews about the state of repair the whole place must have been renovated because I didn't see it. Everything was clean, staff were very polite and helpful. The students were on summer break so the beach was fairly peaceful. I had an amazingly wonderful time and would recommend staying there.

We had a superior beach cottage. I cannot image what the others were like because our accommodations were horrible. The cottage was in a state of disrepair, as was the entire facility.
Several examples are as follows:
1. Florescent lighting in living area and bedroom
2. Broken and filthy beach chairs on our deck and in front of our cottage.
3. Cracks and holes in bath tub.
4. Rotting wood on bedroom and bathroom doors
5. Inadequate towels in bathroom
6. Wood paneling throughout the cabin in disrepair, allowing light and bugs to enter.
7. Restaurant was very disappointing....blender to prepare drinks was out of service for our entire stay, and many items on the menu were not available.
8. When asked to speak with the manager, we were told that she is only on site once a week.

It is indeed regretful that Chmagr experienced this quality of service and services, however it is also unfortunate that the tone of the review is not quite accurate, inspite of this we have adressed all the issues and wish to clarify some points.

In some areas we do use florescent bulbs to reduce the costs to the environment of other wattage bulbs. We agree that some guests find this unattractive so we have deigned coverings and are having them made by local craftspeople.

The beach chairs are not filthy as our staff responsible for them work from 7am until 7pm and are supervised to clean the gardens and beach including the chairs twice per day. In the tropical gardens and beach where there is often sunshine and rains it is normal to have to wipe down outdoor furniture 2 or 3 times per day. If a chair gets broken, which happens sometimes weekly, it is taken away.

The bath had been broken by a previous guest and Chamgr was informed of this but chose to upgrade to this cottage as it was the only one in it's category available. The bath was replaced the same week of check-out.

The doors were not rotten but rather worn and this was repaired immediately.

We place 2 towels, 2 face towels ad 2 washcloths in each cottage as well as an extra set in wardrobe, some guests expect to have 4 sets in one day.

Wooden panelling cannot be in disrepair as the cottages are made of Guyanese Greenheart which lasts a lifetime. Wood tends to contract and expand depending on the levels of humidity but the tiny spaces between the boards is minimal when this happens.

We offer guests the use of the neihbouring restaurant, Le Flambeau Restaurant & Beach Bar, unfortunately if a blender breaks on a Saturday it is not always possible to replace it until Monday. Sunday is a public holiday in Dominica. The Manager next door has assured us that he has gotten a back-up one. As per menu items, there were three items not available and it is noted on the menu that all items are subject to seasonal availability as we are in a developing country.

The Manager who was recuperating from surgery was at the property on 4 of the 8 days the guests were there. Her Assistant Manager was there 7 of the 8 days, we try to always have a person in a supervisory role present.was at the property.

Reviews are critical to our business so we very much appreaciate all of them as even negative ones give us opportunities to improve the guest experience. The entire team at our property is committed to making Picard Beach Cottages a very special place in Dominica.

Sincerely,
Carla Armour

We stayed here for four nights in early June. There were only two other cottages occupied, so it was a quiet and serene vacation. The AC had to work pretty hard, but we were cool enough. BUT ---- returning home our VISA bill had a $54 charge on it, separate from our deposit and final charges at check out. I have tried and tried to get the property to remove this charge, but they tell me "We have no record of charging your card for this". If you go, you should be aware of this. I have seen a couple of other reviews mentioning mystery charges. I would suggest you stay elsewhere and avoid the problem.

I lived in Dominica for two years and know the place well. Picard Beach Cottages are a great bargain (economy accomodations are tough to find in DA) and aare wonderfully comfy place to stay. The beach as a stones throw away yet the place is quite private. The staff was great and the cottages are very comfortable/clean. Wish I was there now...... As someone who knows the island very well, I fully endorse this establishment.
