“Kaya Mawa is a hidden gem and far exceeded our expectations”
Reviewed 18 June 2011

We have travelled extensively to many exotic destinations and we were blown away by our experience at Kaya Mawa.
Where to start...... Our trip was arranged by Southern Destinations who have been a pleasure to work with from start to finish.
Kaya Mawa far exceeded all our expectations. Richard and Michelle, who manage the lodge, have a warm energy and wonderful attention to detail that makes you feel like royalty. The staff are so friendly and when you leave you feel like you are saying good bye to friends.
I am a particularly fussy eater and I can honestly say that I can't remember when I last ate so well. Delicious fresh healthy food at every meal!
The location is quite surreal. Gorgeous private rooms nestled in the rocks or on the beach. The water is 26 degrees and turquoise with visibility of about 30 meters and it's fresh water, not salt!
There is so much to do from mountain biking, kayaking, snorkeling, hiking to name a few.
Our 4 days felt too short, 6 would have been better.
We would highly recommend Kaya Mawa to any travellers who love Africa, nature and the outdoors.

From Lilongwe there is a short flight in a small plane onto the island.

Kaya Mawa is worth every detour if you are in, or near, Malawi. You will feel like Robinson Crusoe (five star equivalent), with the only difference that you sleep in great soft beds. This is an Eco Lodge; very close to nature; the water in our beautiful room was not always that warm; however the fantastic view made up for this. And who cares, Lake Malawi was great to swim in; and warmer water was made available to us the next day. The chef is a great talent; the meals are light and healthy. Simply delicious. Our kids loved this place. They enjoyed diving, water skiing, kayaking, sailing, jumping in the Lake from the rocks, playing in the waves. Please walk to Mango Drift as well, to enjoy a nice Back Pack cocktail or two, or visit the local Cathedral. Ask for Vincent who has the keys. After having travelled to almost 100 countries wordwide; this surely tops our favourites.

If you are looking for a little bit of paradise, Kaya Mawa is the place to go. The lodge and accommodation, skillfully crafted by local communities with attention to environmental issues reflect the peaceful Malawian culture. All rooms are unique, private and have breathtaking views across the lake. The staff are efficient and friendly and Richard and Michelle who manage the lodge go the extra mile to ensure that their guests are comfortable and their needs are met. Meals are beautifully presented and delicious. There are many water sports on offer and places of interest to visit on the island. A visit to the Cathedral is a must. Kaya Mawa is suitable for all ages, families and is an ideal destination for couples wanting a romantic getaway.

I would like to start by saying that the very few negative reviews on this lodge impress me as being very strange and perhaps intentionally distorted. But I think it raises the point that while Kaya Mawa may be a luxury resort, you may not think so if your idea of luxury is to be in the Four Seasons George V in Paris.

Food, service, quality of the lodging, and location. First, we experienced the food to be very good to excellent. You won't have a full menu from which to choose, but everything we had was really nice. Second, James, the owner/manager, is extremely pleasant and helpful. No complaints about any of the staff -- the service level was very good. Our room was fabulous in terms of view and floor plan. You must expect, though, that you will sleep under a mosquito net and the room will not be airconditioned. It can be unpleasantly warm at some times of the year and there are a lot of flying insects and ants, and some spiders. Don't go if you can't handle this. Finally, the location is extraordinary. If you like to swim, dive, or snorkel, you will probably love this resort. It is unique in my experience as a superbly clear fresh water environment with a lot of fish to look at. We had a lot of fun and are glad we went, even though in truth we prefer something more "civilized".

We liked kaya mawa and likoma island so much, that we decided to get married at the local church on our second visit! This was of course all planned in advance, by the very helpful people at kaya mawa- it probably wouldn't of been possible without them. Not only did they organise the service, but also the flowers, a cake and a special dinner in a location of our choice at kaya. Transport to the church was also included with I, the bride arriving at the church chauffeur driven by quad bike. Not only did all at Kaya Mawa make our big day extra memorable, the run up to the wedding was perfect too. Tasteful accomodation, beautiful beaches to relax and evening dine on ( breakfast, lunch and dinner all fantastic) and water activites ( I learn't dive) make kaya mawa a fantastic place to stay. The people of likoma are incredibly friendly and a walk or cycle around the island and into the small town always seem entertaining. There's also a great shop selling handcrafted goods - which along with other work at kaya helps the local community. There's been mention of bugs on these pages and we can honestly say that we had never noticed it to be a problem, during both our visits in July and Oct , but something that was once said to me' if you don't like crawlies, don't come to Africa'! Definitely worth a visit, an amazing place.
